Progress against Oklahoma puppy mills? I just read this article on a local news station's website. It sounds promising if things keep trending the way they have been in preparation for new January 1 regulations. I'm interested in your opinions..... Breeders dump dogs before new laws begin in 2011 TULSA, Okla - Strict new regulations for breeders are about to take effect in Oklahoma. That has many breeders handing their dogs over to rescue groups. 23 dogs were recently handed over to the Animal Rescue Foundation in Tulsa, also known as ARF. Six dogs remain at an animal hospital, because they are in poor health. Dr. Kimberly Huckaby of the Bent Arrow Veterinary Hospital is working to nurse this latest group of new arrivals back to health. Their physical challenges are obvious, things like the mange, eye problems and dental issues. Huckaby says they face other challenges as well. "It's emotional because they've lived their whole lives in a cage. When you touch them, you'll see them jump. Because they are not used to being loved. They're not used to being cuddled." Jaynie Ozment with the Animal Rescue Foundation believes she will see a lot more of these dogs before new regulations take effect on January 1. She says many commercial breeders don't believe they will be able comply with the regulations that have been proposed at part of the Commercial Breeders Act. Some of the proposed rules include: Passing inspections, having larger cages, hiring one full time employee per every 25 dogs, and forcing breeders to be bonded. Ozment says, "We're going to have an influx of dogs for a little while. But hopefully it will slow down and eventually we won't have dogs that are in this kind of shape ever again." The rules are not set in stone. A public hearing will be held in Oklahoma City Thursday at 4 pm. The committee will likely vote to approve the rules later the same evening. |
It's sad...a situation that will get worse in order for things to get better. I'm afraid the big "dump" will be right after Christmas. The greeders will have pups that didn't sell plus old breeders they will have to get rid of within a weeks time, to be in compliance. Rescues should be ready for this and then the annual after the first of the year surrenders...."we didn't realize a puppy would take so much time"....those that get puppies for Christmas presents without thinking about the commitment it takes to raise a pup. |
this is going to happen in MO now that HSUS got their way with that puppy mill prevention act. i can bet that lots of dog breeders are going to start the big dump in MO to get their numbers under 50...i really wish/hope they come up with a way to make this easier than the mass euthanasias and rescue dumps that will prob. be enevitable now. :( it's too bad that they didn't think this through with more detail before passing this law. there are so many things in the bill that weren't done well. :( |
Sounds really sad, but I have my baby 3rd week and i'm not surrending we both are adjusting. However, not everyone has strong character to go over time when u may have to wake up in the middle of the night to let your beloved potty. |

My question with nearly any new law is "where's the loop hole"? Because you know people who are getting rich off puppy mills are going to find those holes. I'm not sure about all the stipulations, but the one regarding hiring one full time employee per 25 dogs seems really easy to get around. Seems like puppy millers are just going to hire their spouse, kids, cousin, etc on paperwork. And like you mentioned, BonBon...where's the enforcement? Even with the inspections, unless they are some kind of surprise inspection, what's to keep dogs from just being hidden away? Another thing about the 25 dog limit...does this include puppies? Because puppies come and go so even say a greeder just has 20 dogs but ten of those dogs have five puppies each.* Do they have to hire two more employees for the weeks they are caring for those 50 puppies? Just seems like a lot of important details are getting overlooked. Politicians just want to get the legislation passed so they can point and say "hey, look what a good thing I did!" But implementation is a whole 'nother ball game. *Keep in mind, I'm just pulling numbers out of a hat here in order to make a point! -C |

My first impression when I read the article was that it was a step in the right direction. Maybe it is, but like you said there seem to be so big loopholes that need to be closed before this can actually begin to make a difference. |

Against Oklahoma puppy mills. I'm so pleased to see this taken place. I'm from Texas and I bought a yorkie from a breeder in Oklahoma last year. She was born 11-17-09 and we had to have her put to sleep this year one day before she was 1 years old. The breeder gave me a contract with a 2 year guarantee and I have been trying go reach her ever since I bought the yorkie. She has blocked my # and I found her kennel name on eBay and reported her. I have also gotten a hold of the state attorney they are helping me. It was said and I miss her so very much her name was Kloe. My 5 year old grandson was and is so sad. We will buy anther but I sure will do more research first. If yaking I just really happy. Yorkie mom and Brie. |

YT is a great place to research what to look for in a reputable breeder, so you can make sure you're not supporting one of our awful puppy mills. |

I agree with the sentiments of all the other posters as well. This is a great start, but questions still remain surrounding enforcement. I am happy though that it is at least starting to be addressed. This is an issue that we cannot allow to continue in our society today. |
