| [News] 50 dogs rescued from puppy mill, sheriff says More than 50 dogs being sold online despite a myriad of health problems were rescued today by authorities during a week-long undercover investigation in Kankakee County. The dogs--ranging in age from 7 weeks to 10 years--were being sold online and in newspapers for $300 to $600, depending on their age and condition, authorities said today. The breeds included maltipoos, Yorkshire terriers, pugs and others. A search warrant was executed this morning at a puppy mill in rural Kankakee County by investigators with the Cook County Sheriff's Department's animal crimes unit and the Illinois state police, authorities said. They said the law enforcement agencies learned about the puppy mill from employees with the South Suburban Humane Society in Chicago Heights. "Sheriff's investigators were able to secure the out-of-county warrant because the Cook County state's attorney's office recognized the emergency situation and the need to quickly get the animals out of their environment," Sheriff Tom Dart said today in a news release. Authorities were looking for a 59-year-old Joliet woman in connection with the puppy mill. Although she wasn't there today, authorities said felony cruelty charges could be lodged against her early next week in Kankakee County because of prior misdemeanor arrests for similar crimes. Investigators arrived at the trailer park in the 5500 block of Illinois Highway 1 near St. Anne, and upon their arrival they could immediately hear the puppies barking from a shed. There investigators found 30 puppies that authorities said were designer lap dogs, confined to the shed, which was below freezing inside. "Puppies had broken bones, internal organ problems and were infected with fleas and mites. One dog has injuries that will likely require amputation of a limb," according to the news release. The property there, the release stated, "is rented by the target of the investigation [the Joliet woman], they [the investigators] learned, specifically for the purpose of housing the puppies." As they investigated that scene, they heard barking coming from a nearby shed. Authorities said an additional 23 designer lap dogs were found confined there in similar conditions as the other shed. The woman renting the home on that property, 57-year-old Karen Brownfield, is related to the Joliet woman investigators were zeroing in on. Brownfield was charged with misdemeanor cruelty to animals. She is due to appear in Kankakee County Court next week. All 53 dogs were taken to the South Suburban Humane Society, where they were receiving medical attention. --Staff report 50 dogs rescued from puppy mill, sheriff says - Chicago Breaking News

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Just saw it on the news! Just terrible. I think the yorkie is the one needing an amputation from having a broken leg left untreated. Poor babies. I thought they said they would be available for adoption in 2 weeks, I hope so and the owner doesn't get them back.

| These people lived in a trailer park and no one did anything for how long? These animals had to live on top of each other to even stay warm...I hope they throw the book at this woman...I also would love to know who bought dogs from her and thought it was okay...cheap dogs...not their problem how they are raised...

Those poor things - I wonder how long that was going on and if she'll just go do it again They need to find out if she has OTHER properties and throw the book at her. The sheriff didn't even get it straight - 'designer lap dogs' ? That makes it sound like they were something special ! They are ABUSED NEGLECTED TORTURED dogs - nothing 'designer' about that ...I'm really starting to hate that word/term grrrrrr- Those poor poor dogs. How cold and scared they must have been and hurt too ? It makes me sick reading things like this - just sick Just a note - SHE WAS SELLING ONLINE ....another example of why people can buy pets on the net and never really know the true story. A very very sad example but still.....

| Fostering a yorkie Does anyone know of a contact person I can get in touch with to possibly foster one of these yorkies? We are affiliated with a rescue group that recently disbanded(PawsForConsideration) and would really like to foster a yorkie in honor of the little guy we lost a couple of years ago. We fostered and adopted a Jack Russell from a puppy mill bust in Missouri so we are familiar with puppy mill dogs and Yorkies. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I'm going to send this to my son, they bought a dog at a pet store, and it's the love of their life, I've been preaching about this for a long time, but a mama can only do so much. The little dog in the picture looks just like their dog, and maybe my message will hit home this time.

| Couldn't find the you tube video. But I looked up South Suburban Humane Shelter & it said this case goes to court April 9 which was Friday. I'm going to send the States Attorney, John Boyd, an e-mail (statty@k3county.net) & I'm calling him 815-937-2930. After I contact the shelter 708-755-7387 to see if they got custody of the 55 dogs. I can't imagine anyone giving those poor dogs back to Karen Brownfield & Patricia Gorecki. |

| OMG! I just want to sit here and cry for those poor babies. How can anyone be so heartless to these innocent babies. Is their even a heart in these people. What really makes me mad is as quality breeders we have to compete with this kind of trash. I surely hope after some people see this story they will start paying more attention to whom and what they are buying. They are not ordering a pair of shoes over the Interent this is a live baby. |
