| [News] 400 Dogs Rescued from Arkansas Puppy Mill 400 Dogs Rescued from Arkansas Puppy Mill 400 Dogs Rescued from Arkansas Puppy Mill Reported by: KARK 4 News Monday, Mar 23, 2009 @03:40pm CST Nearly 400 neglected dogs were rescued today from a Logan County puppy mill. The Humane Society of the United States was asked to help by local law enforcement, in preparation for the large-scale raid. The dogs were found living in horrific conditions in dilapidated structures throughout the 82-acre property. Members of The HSUS’ Animal Rescue Team and the Humane Society of Missouri removed approximately 350 dogs, 17 miniature ponies, six cats and several exotic birds and turtles from the property. “Most people don’t realize that this is the cruel reality behind those cute puppies for sale in pet stores and online,” said Desiree Bender, Arkansas state director for The HSUS. “These dogs were kept in tiny cages and forced to breed continuously for the profit of the mill owners.” When rescuers arrived at the property, they encountered a disturbing scene. The dogs, ranging from Shih Tzus and Poodles to Akitas and Shelties, were suffering from serious medical ailments and housed in filthy conditions. Many of the dogs were severely matted and suffering from untreated lacerations and serious skin and eye infections. Some of the first to be freed were day-old puppies. It was obvious that many of these animals had never known life outside their wire cages. “Puppies were being sold over the internet among other avenues. We also recovered purebred registration papers from several kennel clubs,” continued Bender. “People were buying the puppies without knowing the cruelty they were supporting. It is vital that anyone buying a puppy go and see where they were born, meet the parent dogs and ensure they are being well cared for.” All of the animals were swiftly removed and transported to a nearby emergency shelter set up specifically for this rescue mission. After arriving at the shelter, the dogs were checked by a team of veterinarians and given any necessary immediate medical care. Volunteers from United Animal Nations are on hand to assist with the temporary shelter for the rescued animals. Much-needed supplies were provided by PetSmart Charities, which sent its Emergency Relief Waggin’ full of donated goods such as wire crates, dog food and bedding. “United Animal Nations volunteers are working hard to get the dogs settled and cared for,” said Janell Matthies, UAN emergency services manager. “They seem to be acclimating nicely and are beginning to interact with their caretakers. We are even seeing an occasional tail wag.”

| Hundreds Of Animals Rescued From Puppy Mill Hundreds Of Animals Rescued From Puppy Mill - Local News Story - KHBS NW Arkansas video of the story online Hundreds Of Animals Rescued From Puppy Mill Officials Says Discovery Largest In Recent Memory POSTED: 12:30 am CDT March 24, 2009 UPDATED: 9:30 am CDT March 24, 2009 PARIS, Ark. -- Officials are starting to care for hundreds of animals rescued from an enormous puppy mill on Monday. In fact, officials said it's the largest discovered puppy mill in Arkansas in recent memory. The bust occurred on an 82-acre property near Paris in Logan County. The animals are now being cared for at the fair grounds. The more than 400 animals -- mostly dogs -- were found in very poor condition. The smell of the animals was horrible. Officials said they are amazed so many animals were seized from a property occupied by just two people. "This little dog still had the umbilical cord attached to her, and she was lifeless, completely lifeless," said Scotlund Haisley, with the Humane Society of the U.S. A one-day-old puppy is among the approximately 330 dogs rescued. The Humane Society of the United States handles similar rescues across the world and they said this one was large, even by their standards. "As we drove onto the property this morning, about a mile out, I knew I was close because I could start to smell the stench of suffering, decades of suffering," Haisley said. "Filthy cages, overcrowded cages -- lots of dogs living in just complete filth -- dogs who have significant medical issues that need veterinary attention." Officials said many of the dogs have probably have never been out of their cages. They said the only thing they were used for was constant breeding. "These dogs are not considered to be pets by puppy mill owners; they are factory farm production machines. They are there to make a profit," Haisley said. But now that they've been saved, officials said the dogs like that one-day-old puppy are on their way to better places. "She's back with mom. She's thriving. She's going to make it," Haisley said. As for the people that ran that operation, there is not a lot of information right now. Logan County Sheriff's Office has not released the names of the couple. No arrests and no charges have been filed yet either. The animals are being taken to shelters across the region over the next few days. By the end of this week, the Humane Society said it expects to have more information on how the dogs can be adopted.

| PetSmart Charities(R) Sends Emergency Relief to Scene of Alleged "Puppy Mill" PetSmart Charities(R) Sends Emergency Relief to Scene of Alleged "Puppy Mill" PetSmart Charities(R) Sends Emergency Relief to Scene of Alleged "Puppy Mill" | SYS-CON CANADA Arkansas Officials Report Nearly 400 Dogs Need Assistance at Breeding Facility By: Marketwire . Mar. 24, 2009 08:23 PM PHOENIX, AZ -- (Marketwire) -- 03/24/09 -- On Saturday, March 21, PetSmart Charities dispatched its Emergency Relief Waggin'® vehicle to Paris, Ark., where nearly 400 dogs and other assorted animals were rescued from an alleged puppy mill and breeding facility. The Emergency Relief Waggin' vehicle departed the PetSmart® Distribution Center in Ennis, Texas, on Friday at the request of Logan County officials and the Humane Society of the United States. The vehicle is set up at the North Logan County Fairgrounds in Paris, where rescuers are caring for 350 dogs, 17 miniature ponies, six cats and several exotic birds and turtles who were taken from the 82-acre property. The vehicle is stocked with 16 tons of supplies, valued at $60,000, including 26 pallets of dog food, wire crates, plastic carriers, bowls and leashes. The vehicle also comes stocked with items such as fans, a generator, tents, a battery charger and lights to aid the animal rescuers on scene. "Our Emergency Relief Waggin' program offers assistance in these situations to help pets who need immediate care and attention," said Susana Della Maddalena, executive director of PetSmart Charities. "In many cases, these pets will experience, for the first time, what it's like to be well fed, comfortable, clean and cared for. Our hope is that over time, the pets rescued from puppy mills, low-quality breeders and hoarders can be rehabilitated and placed into the caring homes they deserve." The rescued dogs ranged from Shih Tzus and Poodles to Akitas and Shelties and were suffering from serious medical ailments and housed in filthy conditions, according to rescuers at the scene. Many of the dogs were severely matted and suffering from untreated lacerations and serious skin and eye infections. Some of the first to be removed from the property were day-old puppies. "PetSmart Charities hopes that cases like this help raise awareness about the plight of some animals in high-volume, low-quality facilities," Della Maddalena added. "Unfortunately, many puppies in pet stores or advertised for sale by other means come from facilities such as these. We encourage prospective Pet Parents to make educated choices, or consider adopting, when choosing to bring a puppy into their home." After arriving at the shelter, the dogs were checked by a team of veterinarians and given any necessary immediate medical care. Volunteers from United Animal Nations are on hand to assist with the temporary shelter for the rescued animals. PetSmart Charities established its Emergency Relief Waggin' program in 2007 to assist the animal victims of natural and manmade disasters nationwide. Members of the public who would like to support PetSmart Charities' Emergency Relief Waggin' program can make a tax-deductible donation in one of two ways: 1. Make a credit card donation via the PetSmart Charities Web site at: www.PetSmartCharities.org; 2. Mail a check earmarked for "Emergency Relief" directly to: PetSmart Charities, Attn: Emergency Relief; 19601 N. 27th Avenue, Phoenix, Ariz., 85027. Funds raised will be used to aid pets affected by this and future Emergency Relief Waggin' program rescue efforts when pets are affected by natural and man-made disasters. | Charges 'Unlikely' For Couple Accused Of Running Puppy Mill Charges 'Unlikely' For Couple Accused Of Running Puppy Mill Charges 'Unlikely' For Couple Accused Of Running Puppy Mill - Local News Story - KHBS NW Arkansas POSTED: 7:20 pm CDT March 24, 2009 UPDATED: 8:20 pm CDT March 24, 2009 PARIS, Ark. -- Logan County Sheriff Steve Smith said his department began receiving complaints against Leonard and Sandra Krupenski two years ago. The complaints accused the couple of having unsanitary living conditions for hundreds of dogs and puppies at their 82-acre residence, just outside of Paris. Smith said over the past two years he had numerous conversations with the couple and encouraged them to diminish the number of animals on their property. Follow up visits to the property showed no signs of improvement, which prompted Smith and officials from the U.S. Humane Society to execute a search warrant. Officials seized more than 300 dogs and puppies, along with other animals including horses and turtles. "The lady (Sandra Krupenski) would claim that she loved every single one of these animals -- that they were her babies -- and that they would die without her," said Desiree Benton, director of the Arkansas Humane Society. Benton said the seizure was the second largest puppy mill bust in Arkansas history. Smith said the couple was a licensed dog breeder in the past, but recently had their license revoked. An official with the United States Department of Agriculture told 40/29 News that the Krupenski's were not "active" licensed breeders. Smith said despite the large volume of animals, he believes the couple wasn't intentionally neglecting the animals. "These are elderly people who were unable to care for them as they should have been," Smith said. "It wasn't intentional neglect -- it was unintentional I believe." Benton disagrees. "(It was a) typically puppy mill," Benton said. "They don't see anything wrong with how the dogs were living." Both Smith and Benton said the state and local government don’t have enough resources to handle animal cases of this magnitude. “Our state is so over populated with animals (and) we have so very few shelters,” Benton said. “We have three counties in the entire state that have an actual municipal county funded animal shelter." Smith said it will be up to the prosecuting attorney whether to file animal cruelty charges against the Krupenski's. He said charges will be "unlikely" since the couple relinquished custody of the animals to the U.S. Humane Society. The seized animals will be taken to shelters across the country to be cared for and eventually adopted.

| About 100 rescued dogs arrive in Colorado KRDO.com Colorado Springs, Pueblo - Weather, News, Sports - About 100 rescued dogs arrive in Colorado About 100 rescued dogs arrive in Colorado Associated Press - March 26, 2009 12:44 AM ET DENVER (AP) - About 100 dogs that authorities say were rescued from a puppy mill in rural Arkansas have arrived in Colorado. A volunteer pilot flew the first 15 to the Centennial airport Wednesday afternoon. The rest arrived Wednesday night. The dogs have been taken to the Denver Dumb Friends League, which hopes to adopt them out. The Larimer Humane Society, the Humane Society of Pikes Peak Region and the Humane Society of Boulder Valley also plan to help. The dogs were among nearly 350 that were removed from an alleged puppy mill on an 82-acre property in western Arkansas, near the town of Paris. | Several rescued dogs now in Bella Vista NWAnews.com :: Northwest Arkansas' News Source Several rescued dogs now in Bella Vista DOUGLAS GRANT Staff Writer douglasg@nwanews.com Nine of more than 300 dogs rescued March 23 from a home in Logan County have found their way to Bella Vista via staff at the Bella Vista Animal Shelter. Animal-welfare officials rescued 310 dogs and 36 miniature horses from an 82-acre site owned by an elderly couple south of Paris, Ark. Forty to 50 members of emergency response teams from the Humane Society of the United States, United Animal Nations and PetSmart Charities converged on Paris to begin processing and treating the animals removed from the property near the Driggs community, about halfway between Paris and Magazine on Arkansas Highway 109. The dogs were of various breeds, including Pomeranians, Yorkshire terriers, miniature collies, poodles, spaniels and pugs. In addition to the dogs and horses, crews picked up several cats, birds and turtles that were inside the couple's home. The new arrivals at the local facility include a 140-pound Akita, two Pekinese, two Yorkshire terriers, two King Charles Cavalier spaniels, one Pomeranian and one poodle. The spaniels, the Pomeranian and the Akita are, for the most part, in good physical condition. However, all are showing some signs of shyness and fear in their new surroundings. The Akita is especially antsy, probably as a result of its being nearly blind and spending as many as four years cooped up in a small enclosure, said Bella Vista Animal Shelter Manager Donna Miles, who drove to the Logan County Fairgrounds on March 25 to get the dogs. When a worker attempted to place the large dog in a fenced-in area, the Akita would not go in. The Yorkies and the poodle will need a doctor's care. One Yorkie has a broken lower jaw, and the other has no lower jaw at all. Miles said she doesn't know how fresh the break is and hopes a veterinarian can set it. As for the other little dog, she said he can eat as long as his food is the consistency of gruel. The poodle had a seizure after it was removed from the property and will require a vet's examination and, hopefully, a health certificate making it available for adoption. The three dogs went to Sugar Creek Animal Hospital in Bentonville last Thursday. The Akita had an appointment Friday, and then everybody will go in this week to be spayed or neutered and have their teeth cleaned, if needed. Once cleared by a veterinarian and Miles' staff, the dogs will be put up for adoption. "They will cost a little bit more to adopt because of the medical care," she said, "but not a whole lot more." Only seven dogs will be available, as Miles transferred one spaniel and the Pomeranian to the Benton County Animal Shelter the day they arrived in Bella Vista.

| Couple Accused Of Running Puppy Mill Speaks Out Couple Accused Of Running Puppy Mill Speaks Out - Local News Story - KHBS NW Arkansas watch the video - see & hear the couple - the woman calls herself more of a hoarder & says she has no idea how many dogs she had - she says they will get more animals Couple Accused Of Running Puppy Mill Speaks Out POSTED: 6:02 pm CDT April 2, 2009 PARIS, Ark. -- Sandra and Leonard Krupcznski are accused of running a puppy mill on their Paris property where the Logan County Sheriff's Department and the U.S. Humane Society seized more than 300 animals last Monday. Officials said they found mostly dogs and also several horses. Humane Society workers said some of the dogs were underfed, never let out of their cages for exercise and forced to sleep in feces. The Krupcznskis said the dogs were sometimes hard to maintain but not abused. "I know we had too many dogs. I'm the first one to admit it. Those animals weren't abused not one bit. I loved them," said Sandra Krupcznski. The Krupcznskis admitted some of the dogs were matted and needed their nails clipped but said they kept them healthy. "We are thousands of dollars in debt buying those dogs food. They were well fed," said Krupczinski. The U.S. Humane Society took all the animals to shelters across the country. They are in the process of being adopted out. The Krupcznskis were not charged with animal cruelty because they signed the animals over to The U.S. Humane Society.

| yorkiesmiles, thank you for posting all the links on this story. It's so sad that they weren't charged! I don't care that they were elderly. The animals suffered, they should have been charged.
