Default [News] 67 dogs removed from alleged Chicago puppy mill

67 dogs removed from alleged Chicago puppy mill

Wandtv.com, NewsCenter17, StormCenter17, Central Illinois News-67 dogs removed from alleged Chicago puppy mill

Associated Press - March 24, 2009 6:44 PM ET

CHICAGO (AP) - Authorities say 67 puppies that were removed from squalid living conditions at an alleged South Side puppy mill have been sent to a city animal care and control center.

Authorities say the total number of puppies removed from the home today was 67. Earlier today officials reported that total as 70 puppies.

Thirty-eight-year-old Demetria Newell was cited today after authorities raided the suspected puppy mill. She faces 67 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty.

It wasn't immediately clear if Newell had an attorney and a phone listing couldn't be located.

Cook County Sheriff's police spokesman Steve Patterson says some of the dogs were too big for their cages. Other puppies were found in closets.

Authorities say syringes and antibiotics were found at the scene, which Newell allegedly used to treat the animals.

Officers also went through the trash because of reports of dog bodies being thrown into the garbage.

There seems to be several versions of this AP story out there. Here is so more info I found:

Agents raided the home Tuesday morning after undercover visits over the past weeks.

When officers approached the door, they could hear yelping from inside the house, said Chicago Police Sgt. Mark George.

He said the dogs were also kept in an enclosed porch and closets. In some parts of the house "the ammonia reeks so bad you can't breathe," he said.

Patterson said the puppies were taken to a Chicago Animal Care and Control center.

Some 70 puppies were found today living in filthy, stacked bird cages in the West Englewood neighborhood, officials said.

"There are dogs running all over the place," said Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart, who held an afternoon news conference outside the small home while holding a pair of shivering Chihuahua puppies in his hands. "I couldn't believe it: the chaos, the noise, the smell."

Dart, who took part in the morning raid, got national attention this fall after he briefly suspended evictions for mortgage foreclosures in the county. Earlier this month, the sheriff filed a federal lawsuit against Craigslist.com in an effort to force the Web site to take down its "erotic services" section because, he said, it facilitates prostitution.

On Tuesday, Dart and a handful of other officials held a press conference outside the residence in the 6400 block of South Bell Avenue, carrying the tiny dogs out in cages for cameramen and photographers to shoot. A mother Chihuahua and her six suckling puppies were hauled out in a laundry basket.

The dogs - mainly Chihuahuas, but also a Yorkshire Terrier, several Pomeranians and a pregnant Pug mix - yelped during the procession but did not seem underfed or ill. Dart said the 67 dogs found would be checked out by a veterinarian at Chicago Animal Care and Control and would likely be available for adoption in coming days. [For information on adoption, call ACC 312-747-1406.]

Following Tuesday's raid, Demetria Newell, 38, of the Bell Avenue address, was charged with 67 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty. Another resident, David Hayes, 37, was charged with felony possession of marijuana after a Ziploc bag full was found during the search, authorities said. Dart said a 9mm semi-automatic weapon was also recovered inside the home.

Officials said they were acting on a tip that the bodies of deceased dogs were discarded in a city garbage container, but they found no evidence of that.

Several neighbors Tuesday expressed outrage after hearing about the dogs' living conditions. Vicky Green said she thought the owners were running a legitimate animal grooming and boarding business.

Dart said the puppies were being sold for $475 apiece.

On the window outside the home was a neon dog sign with the word "open" spelled out. Underneath the sign was a placard that read: "Warning: This is a 15th Ward Block Club Watch Area and we know our police."

The U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Chicago Police Department also took part in the raid.

Cry This is horrible!

I heard about this yesterday night while watching the news. I was going to look it up this morning but you already have it posted. Good Job yorkiesmiles you are always on top with our news.

This is so sad....
I'm so happy that the police is starting to catch on to all these puppy mills and shutting them down. I'm sure they still have a few 'hundreds' to go. But this will have to stop ONE DAY!

Puppy mill dogs going up for adoption

Nearly 70 dogs rescued from a puppy mill on the Southwest Side have been sent out to private shelters, where they're being evaluated before they'll be put up for adoption.

The dogs will be bathed and examined, and if they're healthy, they'll be available for adoption as early as this Friday, the Tribune reported.

Already, a mass of dog lovers descended on Chicago Animal Care and Control, which initially took custody of the dogs. But anyone wanting to adopt one will have to go elsewhere, through one of several area shelters.

Oh my God,
have you seen the fear in their eyes, and where the ears are?

Years ago I had three chihuahuas and they never looked as these poor creatures, never!

I hope the best for all of them.

yes, you are right - most of them look scared. But the first couple with their new families were so adorable - you could see the excitement of these new families. I pray that these dogs have truly found their forever homes & will be treated the way they deserve. Also, I'm not one for dachshunds (when I was little a friend had several & at least one was pretty snappy - guess that experience has stayed with me) - but the dachshund was so cute!

Sorry I must explain: I don´t mean the video in which the chihuahuas presented their new familys - I meant the video above. They look really full of fear. In the video with their new familys is fear in the eyes too but not so much. I believe it that the new owners will them loved and take the fear from them, maybe it can be need a long time. I wish all of them the best and I´m glad that they are saved.

Thank you for the infomations about this.
