| Missouri woman gets 12 years for animal abuse Missouri woman gets 12 years for animal abuse The Official KFVS12 and Heartland News Web Site | Mo. woman gets 12 years for animal abuse Associated Press - February 18, 2009 1:04 PM ET FARMINGTON, Mo. (AP) - An eastern Missouri woman is sentenced to 12 year in prison for neglecting her dogs. The sentence for 46-year-old Tamara Lynn Benscoter of Park Hills was handed down Friday. Police in Iron Mountain were called to Benscoter's former home twice in September. Six dogs were seized. Authorities said the animals were infested with fleas and lacked adequate food and water. In 2004, Benscoter and her husband, Fred H. Benscoter, were charged with 70 counts of misdemeanor animal abuse. In that instance, the Humane Society of Missouri seized 119 animals from another property. Both were sentenced to probation, though Fred Benscoter later was sentenced to a year in jail for violating his probation.

| This is the best news I have heard in a long time!! Hope this spurs other officials to prosecute these puppy mills and animal abusers and lock them away for years & years!

| Yay! One more dealt with seriously! I would say this helps show the problem with just giving probation. Good to see the justice. I will pray for legislation! Oklahoma is finally working on thiers! Missouri is #1 and OK is #2. We may be on the way to changing some of that.

| I second that!! We can only hope that if stiffer sentences are handed down to these people it just might have an impact. We've got to keep pushing forward with legislation and at a local level within counties. Keep the word going out!! The thought came to me that if pet stores could be held liable in the legal sense for selling sick puppies, they might think twice as to where they get them. But in the same breath, I suppose millers would find another way to sell these babies. And so the fight goes on! |
