| [News] Yorkie Wins UK Newspaper Pet Calendar Contest ALTON -- Murphy is one hot dog. The 3-year-old Yorkshire terrier mix pulled down 5,650 votes from readers to win the honor of being the top finisher in The Telegraph’s Newspapers in Education Pet Calendar Contest. The unassuming canine appeared magnanimous in victory while sitting contentedly in the lap of his owner on Friday, wearing a miniature yellow T-shirt and eating a treat. Murphy was listed as No. 89 on the page of pooches, cats, rabbits and other critters that readers had to choose from in the pet popularity contest. He will be featured on The Telegraph’s pet calendar, and the $16,000 generated by the contest will go toward the NIE program. Readers got to cast ballots at 25 cents a vote, with some readers sending checks for hundreds of dollars. Jack and Jan Rhoades of Godfrey, who both worked for Boeing until retirement, adopted Murphy after their previous dog, Duchess, died at age 10 in 2003. Jack said his wife took the loss hard, and said she even had high blood pressure after losing Duchess. He said finding another dog was tough, but a few months after Duchess died, they adopted Murphy in May 2003. Rhoades had gone to the mall to look for another dog and saw the perfect one, but the sign on the cage read "not for adoption." "I said, ‘Are you sure? Is there any way we could adopt this?’" Rhoades recalled. "He said, ‘No, just qualified people can come in to adopt this. Now if you guys qualify, it’s possible.’ I said, ‘You got a minute?’ "I went out in the car and got an album of Duchess," Jack said. "I showed him all these pictures of Duchess. He went through the album and said, ‘You are the only people that qualify to adopt this dog.’ I called (my wife) right away and said, ‘You gotta see this dog.’" Now Murphy, who also won The Telegraph’s Classified Department’s "Cutest Pet Contest" in January 2004, goes almost everywhere with his owners, on vacation and to the grocery store. Jan Rhoades even hems children’s clothes for Murphy. "I convert children’s clothing for him," Jan said. "I was a seamstress at Boeing and I just whip him up some clothes." As for their victory, Jack and Jan said there was no secret other than friends helping vote and staying dedicated to their dog’s campaign. The Telegraph’s NIE program distributes newspapers to schools in the area. Jack Rhoades said he entered Murphy both as a tribute to his wife and because the proceeds go to a good cause. "I wanted to honor him because what he does for me and her, and especially what he had done for her to get her blood pressure back down," he said. "When that blood pressure went back to normal after she got him, she went into the doctor and the doctor said, ‘What did you do?’ She told him and the doctor couldn’t believe it." Ann Crammond, NIE coordinator and contest organizer, said the outpouring of votes for all pets was above her goals for the project. A combined total of more than 39,000 votes were garnered for the top 12 pets alone. "I’m glad it turned out so well," Crammond said. "We were only expecting to make $10,000 and we made over $16,000, so we were very happy." Jack Rhoades offered a few words of his advice to those who may be thinking about adopting a dog. "He keeps us laughing all the time. If everybody had a dog like this, everybody would be happy, I’ll tell you that," he said. http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?n...id=25271&rfi=6 |
