2008 Most popular dog breeds! |
It's kind of sad becasue that means there are way to many puppy mills pumping out yorkie pups. |
My only surprise is that the yorkie isn't #1 this year. For the yorkie picture you would think they could choose one that had at least been groomed recently. |

One correction. It is not the puppy mill that is the problem. The AKC estimates that only 8% of all purebred dogs are sold through pet shops which get their supply of puppies from puppy mills. The biggest producer of purebred puppies is the backyard breeder. :thumbs_do |
And that's why us rescuers stay so busy... |
Another aspect of the article that would heavily infuence the statistics... Mine are both purebreds from long lines of champions, but that does not mean that I have bothered to register them, so how would the AKC know about them? My breeder gave me the paperwork to register them, but I did not bother to. I see many more yorkies than labs when I go walking. Could be because I live in a suburban area. Pugs were not even on the list, and I see lots of those guys too; can't belive they are not in the top ten. You would think that little dogs would have an edge also becuase so many more people have pairs vs a single toy breed. |
Well, I don't really want Yorkies to be the most popular, with popularity comes more poor breeding. I do try to encourage people to register them to show support for the AKC, and to help keep breeders honest, but it does seem like most YT members haven't registered their dogs. So the title should be, "Most registered breed," not most popular breed. :D |

yorkies are DEFINITELY #1 in my book, though!! :D |
Here's our list in the UK. This is of course only a list of registered breeds but yorkies are still number 16:eek: Last year they were number 4! I don't know if thats good or bad, there are lots of pups advertized for sale but alot don't have papers so I think this could be the reason they have dropped. Alot of people have lost faith in the Kennel Club since a documentry called "Pedigree dogs exposed" was broadcast on the BBC last year and the Kennel Club came off quite badly! Dog breeds Number of breeds registered in 2008 1 Retriever (Labrador) 45,233 2 Spaniel (Cocker) 22,508 3 Spaniel (English Springer) 14,899 4 German Shepherd Dog (Alsatian) 11,903 5 Cavalier King Charles Spaniel 11,226 6 Staffordshire Bull Terrier 10,744 7 Retriever (Golden) 9,159 8 Border Terrier 9,145 9 Boxer 7,353 10 West Highland White Terrier 7,330 The rest of the dog breeds in the top twenty are as follows… 11 Shih Tzu 5,495 12 Miniature Schnauzer 5,333 13 Lhasa Apso 5,117 14 Bulldog 4,543 15 Pug 4,480 16 Yorkshire Terrier 3,951 17 Whippet 3,328 18 Bull Terrier 2,922 19 Bichon Frise 2,757 20 Rottweiler 2,631 |

Akc or ckc My babies are registered through ckc. What is the big difference between akc and ckc? I have pedigree champion bloodline papers. |

I do feel are little guys should be number one, but not because of money hungry puppy mills. I swear if they'd let me everytime they closed a puppy mill I'd lock the people in cages, and leave them there for a couple of weeks. |
Aka or ckc reply So,you are saying the pedigree papers of champion bloodline could be false . |
