| [News] Dog fatally mauls baby in Bourbonnais Dog fatally mauls baby in Bourbonnais Jan. 20, 2009, 2:39 pm The Daily Journal, Kankakee, Illinois A newborn girl was mauled to death Monday night in her Bourbonnais home by her family’s 4-year-old Siberian husky. The incident took place at about 5:45 p.m. in a home in the 1600 block of Sunridge Drive, and it happened as the baby girl was lying on her mother’s bed. The 32-year-old mother was in the kitchen preparing supper, Bourbonnais Police Chief Joe Beard said. The baby girl was a twin, and was born Dec. 26, 2008. Her sibling was also on the bed, Beard said. Most of the injuries appeared to have been inflicted on the child’s head. The dog walked into the hallway with the baby in its mouth, Beard said. The mother saw it and called 911. Within moments, the child was transported by ambulance to Provena St. Mary’s Hospital in Kankakee and then airlifted to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood. Yet, the baby was pronounced dead at 11:55 p.m., Beard said. The dog is in the custody of Kankakee County Animal Control. ~ Lee Provost Editor's note: The comments on this story were turned off because too many of the posts violated The Daily Journal's commenting policy. |

| Another tragedy that could have been prevented! People just don't think. That baby should have been in a crib where it would have been safe. Sorry but who leaves a 4wk old laying in the middle of the bed alone? |

| That is awful! How can you say that?! Dogs shouldn't naturally decide to attack and kill a baby just because it was alone on a bed! There is something wrong with that dog. Yes, it could have been in a crib and been protected but I am pretty sure she thought her baby was safe. Its not like she was expecting her dog to attack it. Have a heart.

| carol does have a heart, and a big one at that. we are talking about a 4 week old baby, everything is new to this animal all off a sudden. animals are unpredictable. thats why they make cribs, especially for a newborn.

| I agree! The dog not only had one new baby to deal with but two, and we all know that some dogs have a hard time with newborns and sharing their time with their owners. The babies should have been safely tucked into the crib, out of harms way.

I do have a heart and common sense. I would never leave a 4wk old alone in the middle of my bed and go into the kitchen and cook dinner with a dog lose in the house. NEVER! And anyone who does is asking for trouble.

| Children should not be left unattended with any dog. People put too much trust in their animals. Any dog can bite under the right circumstance. People have to use common sense. I do not think the woman put her children in danger on purpose. She just was not thinking of the danger. I feel sorry for the family.

Absolutely, it's horrific. Chances are the dog was gentle. Leaving a little baby on the bed alone, probably kicking and making little squeeky noises the dog was attracted to it and was playing with it. I am sure the dog did not mean to hurt the baby at all. Now the dog will probably be put down and the child is gone! Very, very sad. This could have been prevented that's all I'm saying.

Last Summer (2008) a 2 month old baby was mauled to death by a Lab PUPPY here in Oklahoma. NewsOn6.com - Tulsa, OK - News, Weather, Video and Sports - KOTV.com | Puppy Kills Baby Boy The mother and grandmother originally said the baby had only been left alone for a few minutes (they left the baby in a swing), but later they admitted they were on the opposite side of the house for as long as an hour and a half taking a nap. First of all, I can't believe anyone would leave a 6 mo. old alone in a SWING while they took a nap, let alone alone with a 6 WEEK old puppy. It's just sad, sad!!

| this is a horrible thing for any parent to go through, looking at your child hanging from your dogs mouth Im sure she is regretting her decision on leaving the baby alone. Yes she made a horrible mistake but that doesnt take away from the undescribable hurt this mother is feeling right now. We dont have to start on the whole blaming game, im sure shes doing enough of that right now herself. I will keep this family in prayer

There is no blaming game here and don't get this thread turned around into one. Yes, this poor family has years ahead of prue torture in watching one child grow up and knowing what happened to the other. Very sad. I stick by what I first said.
