| Donating YT 7000 Club Member | that is so sad, although i don't think the owner should be criticised. they could have come out of no where with out him knowing it. anyway, i hope they catch these terriable people!!! how could they beat up a poor innocent dog and an elderly man?? they should go to jail for a long long time!!!

| WOW what a terrible thing, the owner looks so old it sounds like he was terrified and probably not thinking straight in his panic

| If I think about it though, me..I woulda got beaten to a pulp before I left my precious behind I would have either picked him up and ran or been screaming my head off and looking for something to defend us with. I guess you never can tell circumstances until your in the throws of the situation and for that I say God forbid any of us ever have to go through such things. ![]()

| Now that you bring it up I had a pack of stray dogs gather around my silky terrier and try to attack us when I was on a walk with him about fifteen years ago. They bit him on his back and bit me on my shin (it bruised but didn't bleed because I was wearing thick jeans). I had him on a harness and leash and I tried to pick him up and run but my silkie was in fight and protect mode and was barking showing teeth and flailing around making it almost impossible to hold him. I had to hold him (if you could call it that) by his harness, it looked more like I was holding the tazmainian devil by a belt strap. I climbed up on the top of a car and screamed my head of for help. They tried to follow me up the hood of the car but I kept kicking and screaming. It all happened in no more than 2 or three minutes and my father came out with a bat and a few other men and chased them away. My dad called the police and they supposedly caught the pack of 3 dogs. I never saw them again anyway. My point is things can happen in a split second and sometimes with the shock there is a delay to react and sometimes fast thinking changes things too. If my dog would have been say a Lab or something big things coulda turned out totally different. I might have had to leave my dog and run to safety. So like if we think of this old man and after hearing the aditional info on the follow up story about his age I think it's easier to see it wasn't his fault. I too questioned why the owner didn't just pick her up and run or why not try to save his old friend but then it was revealed that he was an elderly man and the dog was possibly not on a leash (I'm assuming anyway) and it made more sense. I personally think I'll be like the old lady in an earlier story using my purse or cane to kick some booty! ![]()

One thing I noticed was the article never mentioned the owner using a leash. They keep alluding to "Kelly did not follow." She was off leash, which in my state, is illegal. Had she been on a leash, her owner could have kept a better eye out for her. Second of all, since there were no other dogs to be mentioned, I don't think Kelly would have been in "attack mode"....just hoodlums who were yelling from across the streets. Speaking for myself, anytime I see a weird situation, I reach down and PICK OTIS UP, whether it's a big loud truck, a drunk bum, glass on the ground, a bigger dog...etc. I'm not blaming the owner for what happened, but it certainly could have been prevented. You never know what situation you'll find yourself in, and it's always best to be prepared, i.e., keep your dog on a leash in the event that it just may not follow you. Megan, you are right....you cannot change what happened. I know it is different when it is happening and a person might turn to panick mode. This is why it's best to be prepared so we can rely on things (in this case, a leash) when our senses fail us. At least we can all learn from this horrible experience to keep it happening to us. On a positive note, Kelly is still alive. | |

"One man started to chase him, and, while he managed to take cover in a close, Kelly did not follow and was badly beaten." Which led me to believe that it was a possibilty that she had stayed behind to try and defend her owner and then was badly beaten by this evil man. JMO
