Default [News] Groomer Charged With Animal Cruelty in Yorkie Death

Germantown, TN - An employee of a Germantown dog grooming business faces an animal cruelty charge in the death of a mixed Yorkshire Terrier.

Chris Carmody, stepson of Pet Set owner Laura Carmody, appeared in Germantown Municipal Court on the charge Wednesday night. The case was continued to Aug. 3

The charge led to several other dog owners saying their pets were mistreated at the business -- claims Laura Carmody denies.

The charge against her stepson is based on a complaint by Betty Fry, the owner of the 3-year-old Yorkie mix, and a statement from former Pet Set employee Theresa Bourgeois that Chris Carmody struck the dog in the head with his fist.

Fry, who has a reputation for taking in strays, volunteering at the Germantown Animal Shelter and facilitating adoptions, said the dog named Mikey began having seizures after an April 22 grooming session at Pet Set.

They eventually got so bad that Mikey died six days later.

"We were just horrified to have to witness our dog floundering about, losing the ability to walk," Fry said, "having more and more frequent seizures, having to be continually sedated and then finally having to euthanize him."

Chris Carmody's attorney, Jeffrey Jones, thinks it is a case of an ex-employee unfairly accusing Carmody of an attack. Laura Carmody said she doesn't believe any incident in her shop at 7849 Farmington led to the dog's death.

"I don't think that's what happened," said Laura Carmody, who has groomed dogs for more than 40 years. "We're not in the business of trying to hurt dogs up here.

"We're going to fight this," she said prior to Wednesday's court date.

According to police records, Bourgeois, 40, said Carmody struck Fry's dog several times. A short time later, she found the dog unconscious. Laura Carmody performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to revive the dog, the records state.

Bourgeois, who left the business shortly after the alleged incident, confirmed the information in the police records, but declined further comment.

"It's hard for me to believe someone could beat a dog to death within 20 feet of me," Laura Carmody said, "and I wouldn't want to think something like that would happen."

Mikey's death and the charges against Chris Carmody have fueled other complaints. Michelle Musgrove has acted as spokesperson for complainants. She happened to be at Pet Set and held Mikey prior to the grooming session, and she said she thought he looked fine.

"I was holding him, and he was kissing me," she said. "His eyes were clear. He was happy and his feet were just going. There was nothing wrong with him."

Musgrove, who is from Germantown, said she saw one of the employees jerk a dog off its feet while walking the animal in the parking lot.

"This just has to stop," Musgrove said.

I'm just waiting for one of our local groomers to be brought up on some type of charges. Word gets around fast and I'm surprised that they are still in business. They are known for abusing dogs that come into their place of business for grooming.

That's why I am a firm believer that you RESEARCH TO FIND A GOOD GROOMER! Even go so far as to ask to be present during the grooming till you feel comfortable with leaving your baby alone.

No one deserves this kind of heart ache.

This is so terrible...why even work around animals if you don't like them. I hope the family of Mikey gets justice for him...

Buy some clippers, and nice video or book on how to trim yorkies and do it yourself. We are learning but i rather have their first few cuts to look funny, than spend the money and take the chances of a groomer. You never know, they do something as little as using a shampoo that your dogs skin isnt used to and you can end up with problems. If you worry as much as we do then just do it yourself. It saves the money and heartache. And plus your dogs will be less stressed having to deal with strangers holding them down and using a scary noisy clipper on them while you leave them.

I'm planning on learning how to clip Rika myself. Last time she came back with a horrible haircut. She seemed treated fine but her hair was choppy and way too short.

I do a lot of the grooming myself for this very reason! AND when I do take them to the groomers I stay right there with them! It took forever to find a groomer that would let me stay, but I finally found one! There is NO WAY I would leave my babies alone... would a hairdresser expect you to leave your child for a haircut??? I don't see any difference!

thatis just awfull why work with animals if you havent the patience, its the same as SOME carers abusing the elderly and that i no as im a carer myself and have seen to many elderly people abused and YES iv reported EVERYONE iv seen.

on the 1st aug im starting a 3 week corse on dog grooming and hopefully get a diploma at the end, i will then set up buisness as a mobile groomer, people can either bring there dogs to me or il go to them and YES they will be more than welcome to stay while im grooming there doggie i have nothing to hide and could NEVER hurt a animal, id rather say i couldnt groom there dog for what ever reason than have to hurt them just to make money, nothing is worth that.

I got a memo about this at work the other day. Its horrible. I seriously think that groomers (and mind you I am one) need to be surprise visited by some one occasionally to make sure that everything is going as it should.

I have a groomer come to my house once a month and I am always there. I have a lot of pets that need grooming so I actually found it cheaper too. And i tip well so they want to treat my babies extra special and not lose me as a customer. My dogs all love Barbara and she loves them!!

I feel so badly about the poor little yorkie that dies in this case. I hope they prosecute!

i dont know if anybody else has heard this in the Tampa Bay area but a groomer in St Petersburg Florida (which is across the bridge from Tampa) had killed a Yorkie by keeping it under a heating lamp and forgot about it. I dont know if groomers use heating lamps to dry them???? I dont know if its true

Thank you for the reminder I will definately keep grroming my yorkies myself. I too don't do the greatest job but they aren't that bad either but I was thinking of bringing mine in for a professional job. Practice makes prefect and they are so proud when I am done so they don't mind that they look a little funny.

I agree. I love my dogs groomer and I always stay for the visit and we chat. She lets me sit down and watch her groom my dogs and Codie and Katie are constantly trying to kiss her. You can tell she really loves dogs.

Hi, would you let me know which groomer you use in Brooklyn? My Paris is getting spayed next Monday and I'd like to bring her and Harry in next month.

Thank you!
