Best in show: The top 10 breeds
Popularity contests aren’t just in high school anymore. With all the cute contenders out there, you’ve got to narrow down your search when it comes to picking the perfect pet. The American Kennel Club, a not-for-profit organization which maintains the largest registry of purebred dogs in the world, helps you sort out the 157 dog breeds by announcing the Top 10 Most Popular Dogs in America.

10. Bull Dog
9. Shih Tzu
8. Poodle
7. Dachshund
6. Boxer
5. Beagle
4. Golden Retriever
3. German Shepherd
2. Yorkshire Terrier (WooHoo!!!!)
1. Labrador Retriever

lab was number one for 17 years or something like that so i dont think so

I have them with and my yorkies and 2 bulldogs. We have a litter of cute chihuahua pups ready to go on Valentines day.

I do believe this list is based on AKC registrations. That is why the Lab is always #1, since there are so many more pups per litter and if every new owner submits their registration, well they will always be #1. If your furbaby isn't AKC registered then you aren't even counted in the number.

The usually have 2 lists, one for # of litters/breed registered and then the other for number of furbabies/breed registered.

I own three dogs out of the top 5. I have a Lab, Yorkie, and a Golden Retriever.

Yorkies are the number one breed sold in pet shops and since those puppies come from puppy mills, many are registered with "alternative" registries like CKC, APRI, ACA, etc. so they aren't counted.

They are number 19. The scarier thing is that they are #9 on the most popular pet shop puppy list.

I'm suprised yorkies aren't #1 also and im VERY suprised bulldogs aren't like #5 or lower.i have 3 english bulldogs and my one yorkie Prince.

Yippy we have a Yorkie Georgie and a Boxer Coco we know how to pick our furbabies

BTW neither came from a pet shop poor babies that have to deal with that!!!! makes me very angry

We have a Golden Retriever and our new Yorkie girl will be here in March! So we have two from the top 10 list.
I have to say, our Golden is a real sweetheart
