| How to brush your dog's teeth I found a lady who scales dogs' teeth for a living. She came to my house and scaled Otis's teeth, and it wasn't expensive at all. When she left, she taught me how to brush Otis's teeth, so I thought I'd share this with you all. You really have to be firm when you do this. What you need: 1. Small spray bottle (like a traveling size hairspray bottle) 2. Mouthwash 3. Baby toothbrush (Otis likes his Buzz Lightyear toothbrush) Fill the spray bottle with a mixture of 1/2 mouthwash and 1/2 water. You can taste it and if you think it's too strong, dilute it with more water. You will be using this mixture every time you brush your dog's teeth, so keep it alongside his toothbrush. Spray the bristles with the mouthwash mixture. Grab the dog's right cheek fur and pull it up and away from his gums. Put the toothbrush way way back until it hits the back between his cheek and gumline, and brush up and down. Switch sides and do the same. Now for the front. You gotta be careful not to get any mouthwash mixture on his nose. Make a "C" shape with your left index finger and left thumb. Place the "C" over his snout/nose and raise the front part of his lips, exposing all the front teeth. Use the toothbrush to brush his front teeth. Otis hates that part, but you gotta do it. That's how the dentist lady showed me how to do brush Otis's teeth! Hope that helps. |

| Thanks so much for this helpful information. I thought I'd start using a fingerbrush on my Yorkie(10 weeks) without any toothpaste at first to get him used to the idea of brushing his teeth. ~Bella, General Patton, & Maria~ |

| Thank you so much for the info. It is so hard to brush Gucci's teeths. She fights me, I end up with scratches on my arms trying to hold her. I use the pet dental toothpaste to brush her teeth. Im just wondering what is best to use the toothpaste or the mouthwash solution. |

You could also alternate between the toothpaste and the mouthwash, then she'll be getting the best of both worlds!

| Thanks, Junebug!!! I will definitely try that method for The Toto!!! BTW ... she prefers the "Winnie the Pooh" toothbrush!! But, then again, she's a Prissy Sissy!!

| THanks for the advice. But I have question, when do you start doing this? as a puppy? the Vet told me to start rubbing his gums so later when the it is time to brush them he will be used to it. This to me seemed like, as a puppy you don't brush his teeth.

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | I'll have to try this - Cheri wiggles so much I wrap her in a towel but it sounds like a great way to remove any buildup on their teeth - thank you ! |

And Big Benny, I think you should start brushing now, even though he may not need it, he will get used to the act of you going into his mouth. I cannot stress how important it is to brush teeth. When they had to remove five of Otis's teeth, I felt so bad. I cried the whole day! And my mom's Yorkie is all gums because they neglected his teeth. So now he's on wet food.

| Meat flavored toothpaste I have tried minty dog toothpaste and Starsky won't even have anything to do with that. I found at my vet's a meat flavored toothpaste I am going to try. We'll see if he just eats it or can I brush with it. My sister uses it on her Italian greyhounds and they do pretty good with it.
