| Very dry skin Marcus Aurelius has had a rough past month. After we brought him home, he got so stressed out that he stopped eating and drinking completely for two weeks. We had to force feed him every two hours to keep his blood sugar up. Because he stopped eating, he got starting getting sick. His hair started to fall out and he was coughing all of the time. Five weeks later, he is finally getting better and has almost stopped coughing. We are still at the vet's atleast 3 days a week, but he is improving dramatically. Now that his hair has stopped falling out I've noticed his dry skin. It is flaking off. The vet does not want to prescribe anything at this point since he still isn't 2 lbs at 20 weeks. Does anyone have any home remedy advice for his dry skin. Also any advice to expedite his hair coming back would be great! Thanks in advance... God Bless, Shel |

| I've heard that some people use baby oil, but I don't know if it's ok for a sick pup. I'd check with my vet first.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hmmm...I just don't know what to recommend bc I'm wondering what the actual diagnosis is...? It doesn't sound as simple as just "loss of appetite for 2 weeks" - what else does the vet say? I think you should run any thoughts by your vet - but alot of times, an oil is recommended for skin issues. You could give flax oil, with food. But, how are his stools and can he have fat in his diet? What are feeding him now?

| The vet says that when we got him, he had just started an antibiotic for a slight runny nose. She thinks that his stomach was really upset due to the antibiotics on top of the stress of coming home with us. He is doing so much better and his cough is almost completely gone. The vet has run every test she can think of to make sure he is not a sickly puppy and all tests have come back fine. The only suggestion she had for the dry skin was to put a few drops of olive oil on his food. I tried that first, but I guess he did not like the taste because he would not eat the food at all after one bite. Any help is a great help. Thanks again! God Bless, Shel |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I then would recommend Barleans Flax Oil (can get at Whole Foods, do you have one?) - start with just dribbling some on the food, and work up to about a 1/4th tsp. per meal. I work w/ an animal nutritionist for my Marcel and this is her favorite flax. Marcel goes CRAZY for it - he now turns his nose up if there is not flax on his meal....!

| I don't believe there is a Whole Foods around here, but there are plenty of health stores that would sell something like that. Thanks so much, I will have to buy some and try it out. It's nice to hear that Marcel likes it because Marcus is such a picky eater. Thanks! |

| My vet called me this afternoon to check on Marcus since he didn't come into the vet's today. I told her again about his very dry skin and asked about the flax oil. She said that was a great idea! She still doesn't want to prescribe a medicated shampoo due to size. She has a mist called Hydra Pearls that is supposed to be great for the dry skin. I am going get some tomorrow and start both the oil and the mist. I am still really new on yorkie talk, and I just want to say thanks for the advice and support. It's really nice to know there are people out there who really care. Thanks! Shel |
