| Question on Stones/crysals and nurterd Well this is my third time typing this all out. I dont know what it is but I get signed out every time I go to send the message. I have read that a male dog that has had stones/crystals must be nurterd first. Is this true? My male had Calcium Oxalate crystal/stones removed and he was not nurterd before or during the surgery. Can a male or female be breed after this type of surgery? Is stones inherited? I asked my vet this and he said no. he said that many things can cause these stones in small animals. poor diet, bad water. Certain foods that are high in oxalates or calcium, or foods that increase calcium levels, must be avoided. They include high protein foods, spinach, rhubarb, parsley, milk products, and table salt. so if these foods can cause the stones then how is it inherited. I asked Mickeys breeder about it and she says in 20 plus years in breeding she has never had and dogs with bladder stones. Next question is I have heard that in most dogs that have had bladder stone/crystals and had this surgery that they will most likely need it again within three years. Is this true? |

| In a diff. group I belong to this lady that had gone thru what you did said that by putting some limon drops in their drinking water daily and changing the water 2xs a day prevents it from recurring and also works for humans as she herself has had this problem. I'll try to look for the info. and post it cause I know there was more about the type of water also.

| Found it. Mickey's Mom, I found the info. but pm me and I will give you her name and email. I think this would be best to get answers to all your questions. I read her post and she sounds to knows a lot. I hope this helps. Also Please remember I have not tryed this it was someone else asking for advice and it just glued itself in my head reading it. Her reply: take some lemonaid and mix it with a small amount of water so it's not so twangy for him.and keep it down for him.change it out twice a day.also put him on an anti oxilate food.such as the duck formula,or a vet type dog food that doesn't contain a large amount of calcium.avoid dog snacks that are rich in calcuim.stay away from table scraps especially greens cause there are alot of oxilate and calcium in them.you also may wanna substitute foods that are low in sugar and salt also.alot of table foods have to much minerals in it. use only filtered and ozinated water.no tap water or well water. i have suffered with kidney stones since i was 21 yrs old.and a change in diet and liquids will help this.lemonaid will break down the stones and slow down the production of the stones.also you can go to an herb shop and they have a herb there that also works to stop the stones.this will take some time.and just continue to monitor his urine.you also need to watch his protiens.this can be balanced with small amounts of liver.i would use cow or calves liver.and only give it once every couple of weeks. Best of Luck, I don't know you but I have always enjoy and have learn from your posts here and feel real bad seeing you go thru this. God Bless!

One thing that is very beneficial for dogs, especially with oxalate stones is half a juiced zucchini every morning, or at least food processed and poured over their food...This helps cleanse the kidneys and bladder... The goal is to keep the urine diluted so that stones/crystals don't get the opportunity to form, so if you feed dry food, you should add equal parts water to equal parts food...Also, give treats that are really high in moisture like watermelon and apples are good too...

Therapy Dog Donating Member | I'm so sorry to hear about the crystals. I only wish they had this type of forum back in the early 80s when I had my buddy, JT, who had a rare type of crystal formation - our vet at the time even had to send the crystals they removed from him to the vet school down in Columbus, Ohio because he had never seen anything like it before - it was rare - instead of the crystals being smooth - JTs were all spiny looking. Hope all goes well for you.
