| How to decide on the best diet. Hi, everyone. I am just beginning to research the best diet for a 6.5 pound 4 year old yorkie (I am her auntie). There seems to be a number of different viewpoints on what is the best strategy: Use grains... avoid grains. Commercial vs home made diet. Avoid meat. Use only raw meat. Cook your meat thoroughly. Not to mention what the ideal % of proteins, carbs, vitamins, etc. I am a skeptic. No one can agree on what the optimum human diet is, so how can we hope to agree on the optimum yorkie diet??? Any help you can give me on how to sort out the conflicting viewpoints and settle on a reasonable diet would be greatly appreciated. (I am not asking what the optimum diet IS, just for suggestions on a process I can use to sort it all out for myself). Thanks. |

| Good question. When you figure out what the best diet is, let me know. I really don't think anybody knows. The only advice I have is to Google everything about dog food ever written. There are so many viewpoints and I am not sure who is right either. I am doing what makes sense to me now. We'll see how that goes. Every Yorkie is different and I am not sure that there is a perfect diet. I know, I'm not much help.

| Thank you. The problem with googling is you tend to get web sites maintained by people selling their wares and thus biased to their products. Anyone know sites maintained by vet professional orgs or universities or research data bases? |

| There are several excellant foods on the market today. Canidae, Natural Balance, Wellness to name only a few. If you use these and do home cooking to add to them you have the best of both worlds. I use Natural Balance Orgainic, it has only one portein in it, Chicken. All ingreadiants are human grade. No corn or fullers. I add fresh boiled white meat chicken and veggies to the kibble. Buddy does well on this and his coat is glowing. |

| Welcome! Welcome to YT!! You are smart to do research. whatever you find, just make sure that there is no corn, no wheat or soy and no by-products. Those ingredients are in so many of the commercial brands. The corn is used as a cheap filler and can cause allergies/itching. The wheat and soy isn't necessary for dogs and the by-products include all the parts of animals that aren't used in anything else. These include beaks, feet, feathers, plus animals collected from vets offices that have been euthinized for diseases or illnesses. It can also include road kill, including rabid skunks. plastic and metal collars are not even removed. i do offer a healthy all natural made-in-america dog food and treats. If you or anyone would like a free sample, just pm me and i'll pop it in the mail. My girls LOVE this food and we tried them all after all the recalls started and this one seemed the best for us. We love the fact that it is delivered straight from the manufacturing plant to our doors. How convenient is that!! It doesn't sit in a warehouse or on a store shelf so it is always fresh!! Check around and read all the posts and threads on dog foods. Our babies health and lives depend on us providing them the highest quality food. Good luck with your research. click for an interesting video to give you a lot of information about what to look for in a good quality dog food. VIDEO |

| Just do lots of research and make what you think is the best decision for your dog. I feed a raw or BARF (biologically appropriate raw food) diet because it makes alot of sense to me and my dogs outstanding health is a testament to it. |

| Welcome to Yt. I would go with something that is natural. And I think the brand that I use, Solid Gold, has a diet food in there product line. |

| Hi, You can start with a site like this: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_f...iews/index.php And then you can try my very scientific formula for deciding which is best and that is by letting them tell you what they will eat from those very best of foods! Mine eats baked chicken breast and Natural Balance Ultra Premium presently. She likes Wellness, but the pieces are too big for her.

| Natural Balance Recall Natural Balance had a recall. http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news0..._recall28.html and also this website: http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2007/NEW01610.html I personally wouldn't let my babies eat anything from a company that had a recall for any reason. My babies lives may depend on it. |

| Yes, I knew about that. It was back in April and affected only the Venison and Brown Rice Dry Dog Food, which I never used. The point to be made was that it wasn't ever determined what was wrong with it, because it wasn't contaminated with melamine since it didn't have any of the ingredients which the other recalled foods had. It's a personal decision. I feel quite confident in this choice. These are the ingredients of Natural Balance Ultra Premium: Ingredients: Chicken, Brown Rice, Lamb Meal, Oatmeal, Barley, Duck Meal, Potatoes, Carrots, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), Tomato Pomace, Natural Flavor, Canola Oil, Brewers Yeast, Fish Meal, Salmon Oil, Lecithin, Whole Ground Flaxseed, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Inulin, Taurine, Spinach, Parsley Flakes, Cranberry, Lysine, L-Carnitine, Yucca, Kelp, Vitamin E Supplement, Iron Proteinate, Zinc Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Potassium Iodide, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B-1), Manganese Proteinate, Manganous Oxide, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Supplement, Biotin, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Manganese Sulfate, Sodium Selenite, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B-6), Vitamin B-12 Supplement, Riboflavin (Vitamin B-2), Vitamin D Supplement, Folic Acid (Vitamin B).

| i would be careful asking the vet because they normally sell science diet which is horrible food.raw diet is really good and its actually helping my english bulldog puppy Angel become more lean.she has almost lost all of her "puppy belly".regular dog foods normally contain bad ingredients and you can never be sure which is good. |
