Coughing/Choking sound... Very worried!! - YorkieTalk.com Forums

Hey all!

I have a quick question... When Chloey starts playing around she makes this coughing/choking/hacking sound. Nothing comes out of her mouth so I know it's not gagging or anything but this is really worrying me. I checked her collar and it isn't too tight. It's one of those collars that are meant to snap open if she gets caught on anything. I never use her collar to walk her or anything, always the harness. The collar is just there for her tags and her bell so that I can hear where she is at all times.

Now I don't know if this is a normal thing and it happens when little dogs get excited or if she has a problem with her trachea

Any advice would be very welcome

My Gypsy does the same thing and the past two days she has been been making wheezing noises when she does it too....

Oh god! So worried.... I know it can't be Bordatella because she had those shots already but I really hope it's nothing bad to do with her throat

How old is she? It could be reverse sneeze, all 3 of mine get that. Seems like when they do it comes in spells. If she is real young and may have been exposed to kennel cough I would have the vet see her. The reverse sneeze sound is like they are breathing in thr their nose and not breathing out. I hold my hand over their mouth amd nose for a second and then it forces them to breathe out normally. Hope she is better soon

Could be some reverse sneezing. Marcel's was worse during allergy season - and lately it seems MUCH better. Pups sometimes outgrow this too. How old is she?

She will be 6 months old on the 28th of this month. My concern is this: she was vaccinated for bordatella already when she was 11 weeks and again when she was 15 weeks. She never showed any signs of coughing back then, this has only started to happen recently, I would say about a month ago. It doesn't happen all the time, only when she plays a lot. When she is calm, she never does this.

Would reverse sneezing only happen when they are playing? Or is this something that happens any time? I am concerned about this because my in-laws' beagle makes similar noises sometimes and it turned out his trachea was affected from him pulling on his leash collar when he was a puppy. I don't know how Chloey would have gotten that though since, as I mentioned, she is never on a collar-leash combo, only ever on a harness.

It could be the Trachea issue- Yorkies are prone to collapsing tracheas. I am not an expert but have had yorkies all my life. One of our little guys (my parents' dog Pip) is 15 and going on 15 1/2 years old...he often gets this and can't catch his breath. We've been managing it for awhile now. They also have a 3 year old yorkie who happens to get this when he's on his walk - it can be reduced by using a harness. He just gets excited and his throat becomes constricted and continues to hack...does anyone else experience this or am I the only one that is crazy for thinking this?

One other thing I forgot to say- we brought our 1st Yorkie ever- Chips to the vet when he used to cough and hack like that while playing or if he wanted something. The vet said that there was nothing wrong and that it was his way of getting attention. In his case it was not the trachea but definitely turned out to be his way of getting attention!

Izzy is almost 8 mos. and has always done this - especially when she is excited. I talked to the vet and he said she was healthy and nothing to worry about - oh - and she is very tiny - not even 2.5#.

Teddi does this....of course never when we are at the Vet's and actually she does it at weird times. Not necessarily when she is excited or playing. The vet told me it was nothing to be concerned with and that it was probably the reverse sneeze. She seems completely healthy so I'm not sure but I figure if the vet wasn't concerned then I shouldn't be.

My Jennie, who is 14 1/2 also gets these hacking, wheezing sort of coughs. She started 1 1/2 yr ago around spring time. The vet didn't think much of it, put it down to allergies. I thought it would pass when spring was over but it didn't. She has it now and then, and gets worse in spring and when I'm walking her out. In the past I used to get real allarmed because she looked like she had difficulty breathing or a foreign object had got trapped in her nose or mouth. Then I got used to it. When she has it real bad I check her gums to make sure they have a pink colour and therefore is not short of oxigen.
Well, I don't know whether this is happening to Jennie because she's old or what, but I believe this is quite typical of yorkies and also heard this tend to happen when they get excited.Other than that, I guess that as long as they are fine, and breathing normally and don't get blue in their gums, I don't think you should worry too much obout it.

Keely does this every once and a while. In fact she just did it last night. It scares me but I just know that its reverse sneezing and the vet said that it happens sometimes. She is just a little over 7 months old.

Thank you all for your responses! I went to the vet just to make sure she didn't have a cold or anything and told him when it happened. Chloey got a perfect health bill and he said it was something Yorkies were prone to do! He also suggested it might be reverse sneezing but since she wasn't doing it when we were there (obviously

) he couldn't give me any real diagnostic. Just said there was nothing to be worried about.

Phew! I was terrified of it being trachea problems
