| Homecookers: Is Canned Tuna OK? A lot of the recipes say tuna from the pouch only...is canned ok, or not? If not, why? I haven't fed it yet, but just wondering if I COULD, or if there was a reason not to. Is other fish ok? Tonight I'm feeding them fresh steamed Tilapia with sweet potatoes & wheat bread crumbles. Thanks!

| woah SUZY! you are making Layla's meals seem like crap i think tuna is fine as long as it is in water and not oil. Layla has had whitefish and LOVES it! and she has also had salmon and talapia... just remember to wait a few days after the fish to see if they react before you introduce anything else new. Layla wants to know if she can come over for supper!! |

| I'm sure someone with more info will be on shortly to reply, but I just had a similar conversation with my husband. I believe it's because of mercury levels? IDK for sure. Wow! It sounds like your puppy eats better than I do.

| Mine love canned tuna. Sometimes I mix a little into their kibble. |

| Thanks for the input-it IS in water rather than oil. Just bought some at the store yesterday, (thinking it was for ME and not them). But, remembered we're going out of town for a wedding next weekend, and need to cook for them so they have food for the weekend while they're at doggie daycare!

I will feed the fish mixture tonight, and then go back to something they've had before for the next few days. Honestly, I made up the recipe using the quantities in Dr. P.'s book so I could mix in the supplements at the right ratio, but am starting to experiment with some new stuff. The hulled barley was NOT a good idea last week it went straight through them, which then causes them to eat poop. GROSS!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Tuna is good and they usually like it quite a bit - try to find a low sodium version if available and use NON-ALBACORE (Albacore has .353 parts per million of mercury, while Chunk Light only has .118 ppm). Mercury IS a concern, as mentioned, so just make sure you feed it maybe 2 (or 3 at most) days a week (w/ space in between to avoid mercury build-up).

| Great, thanks for the detailed info! I only had chunk light-so that's great, and I'm planning on feeding it to them today and tomorrow only. After that, it's back to turkey!
