| pulling back Is it normal for yorkies to shrink back when you go to reach for them? Tobie's really picky and shrinks back like he's scared, even though I'm not doing anything to hurt him, just wanting to pick him up, but he'll come on his own accord....weird.... He's not the most cuddly dog. His sister who lives with my dad is cuddling feeling, but not Tobie. Should I be worried? |

| I'm so glad you started this thread. Otis does it too, even to me!! People ask me if he was a rescue and maybe abused. I laugh and say "This dog has never even had his little bottom swatted, let alone be abused". I wonder why they do this? Now if he wants something from me, he'll climb up my leg, but if I reach out for him, he backs up.

| LOL, I think they all do it when they don't want to be bothered or think you're going to make them do something they don't want to do. |

| Great post! Piper does the same thing too, but he turns his back on you. I thought I had done something wrong, but now I see it's normal.

| Gizmo does something like it...every now and then he'll back away just about a couple of feet or so and stick his little butt up in the air. I think he wants to play!! He thinks it's fun to have mommy chase him! He doesn't seem fearful or anything. Is that what you are describing?

I think this is right on the money. Lulu does that sometimes especially if she knows I am going to make her go inside or put her in the crate for nighty night.

| We have always called this the "yorkie back up". All of our yorkies do it. Our Luca goes crazy to be picked up, then backs up until you give up....then begs again. lol

| Zoe does that too. She'll drive you crazy acting like she wants to get up on the couch then when I go to grab her, she backs up. What is up with that? |

| Livi does this, too! I am so glad that others do it as well. I was afraid that I had done something to make her scared of me. I had even told my husband that I think that she is so upset with me because I am the one that grooms her. I was going to make him start doing it because it made me sad to see her act afraid of me. I even started walking softer because I thought maybe that was it. I am so relieved that it's not just Livi. I so badly want to just reach down and pick her up and love on her but she will, at times, shrink away from me or even run but then if I go the opposite direction, she is running after me. | My Lilly used to do this a lot and my trainer told me to reach for her from below it that makes sense... In other words, bend forward slowly and run your hands along your legs and then let your hand reach for her from below her chin, that way they don't feel intimidated. After all we are huge to them and things coming from the above can make them automatically shrink back, an old instinct or something.

| I am so glad to read this post. Kiwi does the same thing-she will want me to pick her up and then she backs away and slouches like she has been beaten. We thought it was because we may seem so big to her. She has never been spanked or even yelled at so we were confused by it. Great to know we are not alone.

| Tyler does this too, but he IS from a rescue. I don't think it's necessarily fear, just how you reach for them (like I read a couple posts up) I know that if Tyler backs away from me, if I get on my knees and hold out my hand he'll come over by me and let me pick him up. I think sometimes when he puts his head down it's a sign of respect- kind of humble like. It's just weird to see them shrink back sometimes when you know they've never been hit. |
