| rabies vaccination Another question today.... What are the risks of rabies vac? I mean I always hear to wait till the puppy is "bigger" (in the case of a tiny yorkie like Gemma). She is 5.5 months and not sure her weight but still just 2.5 lbs I'm guessing, and she has not had her rabies shot yet....when should I do this?

| Check with your vet. He is the best one to guide you when to get her shots. |

YT 500 Club Member | My vet told me that they can give Armani his rabies anytime I wanna bring him following his last weeks vet visit. I think its too soon maybe I just dont feel ready yet myself.. so im kind of dogging the vet this week and next. Ill give it to him when he looks bigger.. although I bet the vet knows better than I do

| The rabies shot can be given to pups w/ at least 120 days old and he/she must weight 1kg or more... That's how it's done over here... But you know what, my older kid Maggie is 1 yr old and I've never gave her this rabies vaccine, and probably I'll never do w/ neither one of my furkids(Maggie and Hannah)... The reasons are bc they NEVER go near stray dogs, there's NO contact AT ALL w/ rats or filthy creatures, they live an apartment and they are not allowed to go near some dogs that I think are not friendly... The rabies shot can cause a bump where it was injected and cause limping or pus or anaphylactic reaction... But sometimes nothing happens... |

| Any vaccine (if your dog is allergic which is probably VERY rare) can cause anaphalaxis. I don't want to scare you though. I have heard that some common side effects of the rabies vaccine are redness, pain and a bump around the injection site. Another maybe not so common one is a bald spot (some dogs never grow their hair back there).

| Hi there... Simba just got his rabies vax yesterday. He turned 19 weeks yesterday and weighs 4 lbs. Sometimes they are lethargic afterwards, but Simba didn't miss a beat! He was a busy-bee the rest of the day. I had to postpone the rabies vax for 2 weeks because his doctor wanted to wait that extra bit of time. She checked his teeth & all his baby teeth are still in, so we will also wait until he's about 7 months to neuter. At that time, she'll pull any baby teeth that are still in. Although, I've been in the field for many years, when it comes to my own, I'm just as nervous as any other doggy-mom. The best for you is to ask your vet when to do the rabies based on your little ones individual development. Talk soon... take care Last edited by dragongirl; 06-13-2007 at 11:02 AM. |

| I did a search for you and came up with this: http://www.dogs4dogs.com/JR_Articles/Rabies.html The rabies vaccine is the only legally-required vaccine for companion animals in the United States. It’s administered primarily to protect humans from their pets should those pets be bitten by rabid bats, coyotes, raccoons, foxes or other animals. This is all well and good EXCEPT that the vaccine is known to cause serious side effects, and even death, in cats and dogs. Possible adverse side effects include, but are not limited to: Aggression, destructive behaviors, separation anxiety and odd obsessive behaviors (like tail chasing and paw licking) Autoimmune diseases, including organ disease, allergies and skin problems Chronic digestive problems Fibrocarcinomas at the injection site (particularly in cats) Muscle weakness Seizures and epilepsy I'm sure that these side effects don't happen THAT often, but it's good to know to watch for signs...

| Every state has different regulations as to when the rabies vaccine should be given. Here in Michigan it is at 6 months. Make sure you talk to your vet before the vaccine is given to make sure they will give a lesser amount than the government mandate (which is for a 25 lb dog). As long as your vet works with you, other than your pup being a little sleepy that day - you shouldn't have any problems. Good luck!!!

| The problem is I didn't really trust his advice When I took Gemma for her last shot I think she was just 4 months, 4.5? Anyway, I know she was barely 2 lbs and he said "bring her by next week for her rabies." I felt she should wait till a little bigger? Then she had that episode of vomiting and being hospitalized, and she still has days where she won't eat and has vomited at least one day since then....so I'm just concerned. I have a call into them today though....

| Spike had his rabies vaccine at about 6 months, weighing 3 lbs, 4 oz.. He was absolutely fine, just a little tired after the shot and he yelped a little bit occasionally because I think he was a bit sore at the injection site. Next morning he was right as rain. |
