Almost choked on a piece of bully stick... - YorkieTalk.com Forums

Last night, Wylie was chewing his bully and must've got a chunk off of it - he started doing that funny "air licking" thing they do when something is stuck in their mouths. Nothing new, this sometimes happens w/ chews and used to occ. happen when we gave rawhide.

Anyway, it worsened and we tried opening his mouth and sweeping his mouth, throat - it was still stuck.

He became more distressed and it seemed to be getting stuck in his throat - we ended up having to push on the sides of his chest and turn him upside down to dislodge it - REALLY scary.

So, even though Bullys are more digestible - they can be just as scary as rawhides! Anyone else have incidents like this?

About a year ago, someone I casually know found her little Chi/mix dead after coming home from the store. The dog choked to death on a piece of bully stick. Those things are nasty anyway and should never be given to any dog.

That must have been pretty scary! Glad you were able to dislodge it! Probably scared him really bad, too!

It is good if you can take it away before it gets small enough to swallow. I don't know about your yorkies, but I don't think mine could bite off a big chunk of a bully sitck, like they could rawhide. So I still prefer the bully sticks.

Mine chew Bullys regularly. I take away when they get 3/4 gone. Yes, they have pulled off pieces and got them stuck but not for long. I mean they can choke on their food too...doesnt mean I'm not going to feed. I guess it's just up to you and what you feel safe with. I do get nervous leaving chew toys around when I am not here. I try to limit it to when I am in direct view of them, again it's all in what your comfortable with.

I'm with you. I take their chewies away when they get short enough to choke on and I never leave them out while I'm at work. At any time you can come to my house and find pig skin twists randomly laying on the entertainment center, the hoosier cabinet, dresser. I'm glad you were able to get the peice out of his mouth. Scaaary! Otis won't "start" a chewy. He waits for brother Oliver to get it good and mushy and soft and then steals it from him. I'm glad you were watching over him.

My baby Zoe is only almost 18 weeks and we do use the bully sticks - she loves them but I don't leave her alone with them. I'm so afraid of choking - I've always been that way - even with my "skin kids". I will be sure to take them away when they get too small - she hasn't gotten one too small yet but now I'll be extra careful! Thanks for the warning!

Thank you for the reminder to be vigilent when our furkids are "chewing". My dogs chew Bully's daily -- I take them away when the bully's are small enough so that the kids don't have to hold them with their feet to chew.

I am so very sorry that you had the scare and I'm doubly glad that all ended well.

Thanks, you sweethearts, for your nice replies!

What really scared me is that it wasn't a small stick (as in "time to be thrown away size") - it was a big stick that he got a chunk off of. And, Wylie is 7.5 pounds - so, bigger than many yorkies. Yikes.

And, like you, we NEVER leave chewys alone w/ them.

The Very came thing happened to Scruffy on his 1st Birthday.
We had his Birthday Party & my sis-in-law gave him a pack of Dingo Rawhides because their Pom loves them.
Well they were all in the back yard playing & chewing on Dingos.
Well the Pom chewed his knot off of the end. Then all the guests & Pom left.
Scruffy & Lexi came inside & had the Dingo in his mouth.
My husband was walking towards Scruffy & if he thinks you are gonna take it away he swallows it, He swallowed the whole knot of the Dingo.
It was logged in his throat for the longest time.
He kept gagging & choaking - trying to throw it up & he could not get it up.
We tryed to push on the sides of his chest and turn him upside down to dislodge it - That didn't work either.
About 20 minutes latter he gagged & threw it up. Thank God it came out. Needless to say -We don't allow Dingos Or any other type of Rawhide, Bullysticks in our House.
That was so very Scary & I will never forget it.
I don't ever recomend those kind of treats to anyone with a small Dog.

How scary! I'm so glad to hear he got it out on his own. Do you give them anything to chew at all? It's so frustrating trying to find something I feel safe about! Grrrr!
