Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Increasing Frustration w/ Homecooking - advice? First, I just got Pitcairn's book, which I find overwhelming and rather confusing at times (even the recipes). Here are the supplements I'm giving: Missing Link, calcium (bone meal), Multi Vit, Vit E/A/D. Now, what I'm finding so frustrating is that I'm also reading other homecooking info - and some experts say "no grain, but yes to veggies" - others say "no veggies (not needed), but yes to grains"!!!!!!!!!! I'm REALLY feeling insecure about my homecooking. Pitcairn says "don't stray too far from my recipes" - so, it feels like rocket science. And why is he recommending grains if we're always looking for grain-free dog food? I'm just feeling like there is a real lack of simplicity for those of us who are new to homecooking and/or thinking about homecooking. I think what I really need to know is: is my supplement regimen complete? If I do meat/veggie/grain - can I just do a "ratio" as in 2 parts meat/1 part veg/1 part grain? Or should I eliminate grain altogether and just do meat/veggie - what ratio? I just need reassurance that my babies are getting what they need. I also need simplicity from you experts! Hep me, hep me!

| Oh, I feel your pain as I felt the exact same way when I started! It can be very confusing, especially the supplements. What you're doing sounds great I can't remember what Missing Link has in it, does it have Omega 3 & 6 and digestive enzymes? If so, then you're good. I also give yogurt, cottage cheese, boiled egg and fruit for snacks to help balance things out even more. I wouldn't worry about going grain-free unless your little one has allergies.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Do you do a "ratio" of ingredients or do you follow Pitcairn's recipes?

| This is what I make up and freeze: 2 pounds of free range ground beef, 2 pounds of lamb and 1 carton of veal liver. Cook all the meat, let the veal liver complely chill in the ref. before grinding or it becomes like baby food meat instead of a crumble like ground meat. Next, in the food processer I chop fine, 8 fresh carrots and a couple table spoons of fresh parsely. Mix everything together really well and put into 1 qt. size zip-loc bags and freeze. I steam fresh broccoli or green beans to add to this mix when feeding. You can take this mix and beat an egg, pour in skillet add 1/8 cup of the mix and some mild cheddar, simmer on low till done. I've added this mix to salmon patties, mashed into potatoes and added a little tomato sauce and poured over spaghetti noodles or maccaroni. I'm sure you can think of other ways to feed a good healthy meal too. Any "real" food is better than what is put in dog food. That stuff isn't even healthy or real after all that mess is boiled down to a horribly smelly sludge. Take your pick! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I was homecooking on my own - then I just got Pitcairn's book the other day and THAT was when I felt really overwhelmed! I think it's a good book, but I sure wish there was one out there that was simplified.

| GRAIN FREE IS THE WAY TO BE! You're dog will get any nutritional assisance that he could get through grain, just by your supplements alone. Further, the veggies offer more AND act as a bulking agent to help w/ his/her stools. jm2c (if you want more books to read to explain "why", not just to do it...let me know!) topsredhead@yahoo.com |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | You may have a bumper sticker there! What are you feeding, btw? You're the 2nd "Glendaler" that is grain free on this board!

| I think there are more, they're just in hiding. Wanting to be politically correct and all....and if you look up threads from me or posts, you'll see that I just don't hesitate to open my mouth! lol (yes, it's gotten me in trouble on more than one occassion, but you only live once, so I'll take it!) Umm.....I think I WILL have a friend of mine make me some of those bumper stickers w/ a doggy silouette on there. Great idea! *grin* I'm not afraid to admit that I feed a kibble diet to my large dogs and will only cook for my small dogs when it's most convenient for me. Home cooking can only be dangerous in the sense that if you don't get your formulas spot on for each dog as an individual (because while perhaps the same breed, each dog within that breed has it's own unique nutritional requirements) you can actually cause more harm than good. There are many ways to look at feeding both regarding whether it's a pro or con and since I can see both, I do what's more convenient for me. And my dogs, all of them, have NEVER "needed" to go to the vet within the last.....10 years? Maybe more. You just need to read what's in your food and know how to translate it per individual. |
