| Is insurance worth it? I was just looking into getting VPI (Veterinary Pet Insurance - #1 company & all that) and started reading all the fine print. All of the things they originally implied were covered aren't. For example, you only get to pick 1 procedure out of 3 in a category. This is really off putting because they make it seem like you get everything but reading the fine print tells a whole other story. Also, it implies everything is paid for but later I read they only offer specific, small amounts to each procedure. Not to mention a $50 deductible. Why should I spend $350 per year, a $50 deductible each time, then I have to pay all the rest that their tiny amounts don't cover (if they even cover it)? It just all seems more expensive then just paying for the visit myself... is it worth it to you? Which company do you use?

| In my case it isn't. My vet has very reasonable prices for routine procedures and also gives payment options. Maybe in case of an emergency, but it would really not be worth it if you don't use it at all.

| Edit I forgot to mention that I have to pay for everything up front, then submit a claim to be reimbursed. They say the insurance in good when you can't afford an emergency but that doesn't make sense b/c I would have to pay it all anyway. The whole thing just seems shady & deceiving...

| You're right. How would that save you the money on the emergency? Hmmmm. I don't know of a lot of hospitals that would refuse service when it's an emergency. I don't think it's a good idea. Are you wanting to breed?

| No, it just seemed (originally) that getting insurance for my boy was the right, loving thing to do. The only thing I know about breeding is that it takes dedication and lots of knowledge on the topic, and that I could never do it

| I decided that instead of paying for pet insurance, I'd just start a savings plan for Wobie, and put in at least the same amount that I'd pay for insurance...

| great idea! I've been thinking a lot lately about enrolling in Bank of America's keep the change program (never did b.c ING has higher yield) but that's the perfect little set-up to save for my pup. problem solved, thanks!

Wanted to comment on the refusal of service in an emergency. Sad to say we know of one emergency center, they require a $500.00 depost up front either cash or on a credit card, no personal checks accepted. If the Vet and emergency care charges is less than the Deposit of $500.00 they give refund back in the form it was received. I witnessed it with others in the emergency hospital, it was either pay or pet isn't seen This happened when our Gretta (our dear Doberman) got bit by a rattle snake, we had to give them $500.00 before they would even see her. It turned out that she was there a night and day, when we got there the following day she had pulled the iv out and wouldn't keep it in so we said heck with this stuff, they weren't doing anything so we brought her home gave her lot of TLC, she did fine. Got the use of her leg back and never any problem. I don't know the policy with them now but I hear from others it hasn't changed but am sure they most likely require a higer depost. Our spay for our little girl this past week was $200.00 my daughter in North Carolina said that is low compared to what they charge there wow, we thought what we paid was a lot. No over night either, every other vet said over night stay was a must but then no one would be there to check on them after the office closed at five and I SAID NO WAY, NO THANK YOU. RAJA THAT IS EXCELLENT IDEA. Last edited by Baby Blessing; 05-27-2007 at 06:02 PM.

| Both our local Emergency Hospitals/Vets are the same way. No money....no service! Sad to say but it's like the human medical field....it's become a business.

| I've experienced this first hand as well. When Raja was a puppy he had lots of health problems and we made a few visits to the emergency vet hospital. They wouldn't even call the doctor out into the waiting room until we paid $200 deposit! (I was shaking, crying, completely a mess just waiting for a doctor to come out and tend to my boy!) Thank goodness for Raja's dad and his credit card which really took a beating in those months. Back then I think insurance would have been worth it but we had no idea what was in store for us concerning his health. You would think people in this profession would care enough to start treatment immediately but even the doctor at this hospital was extremely rude & inconsiderate. She told us we bought a sick dog and we needed to go return it for a refund b/c it was too expensive in the 1st place - as I'm in tears and trusting HER to save his life, all she can talk about is a price tag?!

When dd was spayed she came home same night and was fine but my boy yorkie who was neutered and 10 teeth pulled was miserable and everyone says boy dogs are easy with that - not in my experience - he is a sensitive guy and my girl yorkie is a toughie when i checked into insurance if it something on akc site they are predispositioned for on a purebred they would not cover it so opted against it as yorkies have a laundry list of things.
