Just got back from the vet - went to a new one and this one has 2 yorkies, his inlaws have yorkies and his parents have yorkies.

He ended up putting her under as her left hear canal was totally plugged with hair. SAid he thought he would find a bur, bug or something, but just a tight clump of hair - likely he says from when mommy was grooming her as a baby. Said that this is NOT common.

Her ear is very red inside, so we are on Animax for a week. While she was out he said he checked for all the common genetic ills and found none. Said her patellas are good and strong.

He did say she is a real "Drama Queen"

Weight at 17 weeks is 3.2 lbs. Had her final set of shots also. He estimates that she will reach just about 5 lbs.

Well, after sleeping all night for the first time Tuesday night , last night was AWFUL!!! She never slept more than 15 minutes.

Mia started just after we got in bed shaking her head every couple of minutes, scratching at her right ear. I tried rubbing it and she would cry pitifully, got up and looked in and round the ear and all seems ok.

Does anyone have any ideas? She seems to be resting nicely now (of course! LOL!) I am going to try to give the vet a call this morning, but DD has appts about the foot she hurt in PE and isn't improving after being on crutches, so I'm not sure if we'll be able to get in.

Mia is a pup I think? Sounds as if she has ear mites to me although I may be wrong - they cause a lot of discomfort. I f you can't get to a vet 2day you can buy drops over the counter at pet stores. She could also have a ear infection and have earache, poor baby, hope she's better soon!!

How common are ear infections in dogs?

Infections of the external ear canal (outer ear) by bacteria or yeast, are one of the most common types of infections seen in dogs. We call this otitis externa.

Some breeds, such as Cocker Spaniels and Miniature Poodles, seem more prone to ear infections, but they may occur in any breed.

What are the symptoms of an ear infection?

A dog with an ear infection is uncomfortable; its ear canals are sensitive. It shakes its head trying to get the debris and fluid out, and it scratches its ears. The ears often become red and inflamed and develop an offensive odor. A black or yellowish discharge commonly occurs.

Don't these symptoms usually suggest ear mites?

Ear mites can cause several of these symptoms, including a black discharge, scratching, and head shaking. However, ear mite infections generally occur most commonly in puppies. Ear mites in adult dogs occur most frequently after a puppy carrying mites is introduced into the household. Sometimes, ear mites will create an environment within the ear canal which leads to a secondary infection with bacteria and yeast (fungus). By the time the dog is presented to the veterinarian, the mites may be gone, but a significant ear infection remains.

Since these symptoms are similar and usually mean an infection, can I just come by and get some medication?

There are several kinds of bacteria and at least one type of fungus which might cause an ear infection. Without knowing the kind of infection present, we do not know which drug to use. In some cases, the ear infection may be caused by a foreign body or tumor in the ear canal. Treatment with medication alone will not resolve these problems. Also, the dog must be examined to be sure that the eardrum is intact. Administration of certain medications can result in loss of hearing if the eardrum is ruptured. This determination is made by the veterinarian and must be done in the office.

That information is right on the nose. Chelsey has and ear infection. I just took her to the vet this week. At first I was not sure I just thought mabe her ears were not cleaned properly when we picked here up from the breeder.. but then I was thinking how could the vet not have seen all this goop. I cleaned her ear all out and then the next few days the was all back again. Really grose... It was a very very dark colour /no oder and chelsey did not complain one bit. Anyway I rushed her to the vet as I have never seen this with chester or my old malt that we had before. They also thought maybe ear mite, but they checked an did not fine any under the scope. Anyway now she has ear drops I have to give her day and night and she was also treated for ear mites just incase. We also asked for the treatment for Chester to as they play alot togeter... I don't want him to get sick. The only thing that chelsey did was filp her ear out. And I did not think anything of it because she was not shaking her head or whining or scraching ... even the vet was shocked that she was so happy there for her apointment. I hope the vet is able to fit you in as your puppy seems to be in a bit of pain... mention that to the vet , I'm sure they will try and squees you in . The testing for ear mites does not take long we were out in 30 min. Wish you and puppy all the best .

Otis had a slight ear infection over the week. I was laughing when I read the term for an ear infection is "Otitis." Otis has Otitis. hehhe

Anyway, the vet just gave us some eardrops, and it cleared up within a matter of days. He didn't have any goop in his ears, but just some small red crusty bumps.

Good to hear your little ones are doing okay now (both of you!). We usually give Yoda some eardrops and squeeze his ear around after his baths, and Yoda's momma plucks out little hairs in his ear, which amazingly doesn't make Yoda flinch at all!

It's good to always dry their ears after bath. Mojo also had otitis, out of nowhere my little guy just started scratching his ear (left) a lot, i took him to the vet right away, within a couple days he was better. They can get otitis from water that fell into the ear canal or even from too much humidity (that could be wet hair). So it's is recomended that we clean their ears after the bath, most cleaners also dry the ear canal, and the ear powder is essential to pluck any hair the grows into the ear canal.

yep that's how I noticed the ear infection it was after chelsey bath. I did not give her one for a week when we got her because the beeder has just gromed her when we picked her up. She even put a littel bow in her hair and supplied me with new ones.

It was after I took her to the vet and gave her her fist bath I noticed the very dirty ears, but was not sure why it was so dirty. So I cleaned them out.
I alway do the hair triming and clean the ears ,clip the nails and brush their hair at this time. At least now I will be able to spot an ear infection right away.
hopfully she does not get anymore.

Oh, poor baby Mia......... I definitly know how you feel.......

Mei Mei at 4 months old, would cry really loud and tilt her head to one side. We couldn't pick her up or anything without her yelping and she also wouldn't let my other two dogs come near her.

We took her to the vet and it was a mild bacterial ear infection and he put her on Otomax........cleared it right up and she was back to herself in 2 days, although we had to continue the med for two weeks.

It was just awful to hear her cry.
