I'm not a professional by any means, but I think your vet may be overreacting a little. When Bentley had bloodwork done before his neuter, his BUN level was high (normal is 7 to 29 and his was 38.8). The vet did further testing of some sort and found that it didn't indicate any sort of problem, but told me to switch him to adult food that is low in fat. If I remember right, a low BUN is more serious as that indicates liver shunt. Anyway, I just wanted to give you some hope as I don't believe it is a bleak as your vet makes it seem! I hope the second vet gives you better news!

I'm beginning to agree. I cannot understand why this vet made it sound so bad. After everyone's input here and the information I have read, it is quite apparent that one simple BUN test is absolutely NOT a reason to come to such a conclusion as he did. You know, he didn't even say that we should not panic, but maybe run it again after changing foods (KD).
She goes Monday am for the second test. I'm going to keep it out of my mind until I get those results. I wish I hadn't gone to that particular vet. Not because of the test results, but because of the way he handled it.
So, your little guy is doing o.k. now? I hope so.........you hang in there too and thanks for your help. It makes me feel so much better.

Oh, P.S. I asked for the test to rule out liver shunt. That was my concern. He said that was definately ruled out. Thank-goodness! Nikki's level was 30.

A friend of mine had a dachsund who's back legs became paralized, her doctor recommended a $5,000. surgery or to put her down. She couldn't control her bodily functions. As she was trying to get a little wagon for her so she could move around without dragging her body, she suddenly was fine about a month later. Keep up your spirits. I hope she, too, will be fine.

Yes, Bentley's been fine. We are going to have bloodwork done on Monday before he gets put under to get his teeth cleaned, but I don't expect there to be any problems - I'm hoping his BUN will be back to normal. It's funny that one vet (yours) can make this seem so horrible and another (mine) makes it seem like no big deal. It's very confusing and frustrating that they can be so different. Good luck on Monday!

I know!!! Isn't that ridiculous? In her exam (overall) he said nothing negative. Like she is in fine health, until they have something to scare me about. I don't understand that either. Nikki's test is Monday too. Let's hope both little monkeys chk out well!

Default Nikkis BUN

Nikki saw the new vet today who said her results weren't that bad !!!
Actually, I saw the report and hers was like 1 point abouve the high end of the range. Not only that, the vet said that if it were a kidney problem, she would expect to see the (criotin) level high as well. So, bottom line....we aren't going to worry at this point. She is trying the KD food and will be tested in two weeks to see how the levels are.
So, I cannot stress enough to all of you....SECOND OPINIONS!!!! I'm glad I was able to get one right away. Not only that, with all the responses I got from you here at the YF, I began to realize that something was not quite on with that first idiot vet!!
Thanks for your help, support and concern!

Are there any special symptons to watch out for high levels of BUN or do you just find it out randomly when you carry out a blood test?

Many thanks,
D.

Thanks everyone!!!
For as much as I know, the symptoms of a high BUN, or things to look out for would be, excessive urination and thirst, being lethargic and vomiting. Nikki didn't have any of these things. I simply requested bloodwork as part of a thorough physical...and ended up with that scare. Not that she doesn't have kidney problems, but my new vet doesn't suspect it because she doesn't have any of the above symptoms. Protiens are very hard for Yorkies to digest and she is small (3.4lbs) so it's even harder for her. In itself, not a big deal, but the diet needs to be free of protien if that is the case. Another big reason why it isn't a good idea to let your baby have table food.
Everything is individual and controversy as well. Just like with humans. Some can tolerate spicy rich fatty foods, others have IBS. It's no different in dogs.
I also had suspected dehydration because I never saw her drink. (That can contribute). I'm sure she did drink, but I'm used to seeing big dogs lapping it up. Anyway, I bought a baby bottle from the pet store and would give her drinks periodically to insure myself that she was getting fluid. My husband thought I was nuts....maybe so, but the vet said that was a good idea. And she looks so cute too!! I did see her drinking yesterday by the way.
These little yorkie guys are sooooo easy to spoil!

I would get a second opinion in a heart beat. I lost one of my babies in March from renal failure. He was 14 years old. It just seems like 14 months is awful young to be having renal failure. It is something that neither you are your baby wants to endure. Please check and double check to make sure the diagnosis is right.
