| How prevalent is rabies where you live? Since we're required by law to give rabies shots to our pets I was a little curious of how prevalent this problem really is...so I went looking....the following link shows the U.S. map & reported cases in skunks, raccoons, bats, etc....I was a little surprised that most cases come from raccoons followed by bats, & it appears the concentration is in the east....I started a thread about Lyme disease cases & was also really surprised that the majority of cases we're in the north & east coast.... http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvrd/rabie...idemiology.htm

Donating YT 500 Club Member | That was interesting to see those maps and scary to read the cases of human deaths from rabies! Years ago we (husband, son & I) had to take the shots after a goat we had been bottle feeding, got rabies and died. NOT FUN!!

| I must say that until the past couple of years I had not heard much about rabies in our area, but this year already there have been about 6 cases of rabid skunks found near us. I was very watchful about taking our recent litter of puppies outside even though we have a fence. They have recently received their rabies shots so I feel a little better about it now. It is a very scary disease.

Bella Boo & Diggy Too! Donating GS Member | Rabies Vacs I think what bothers me is...After researching a bit on Rabies Vac's for my ferrets.....I found more ferrets died from reactions to the shot rather than the disease it's self....Im in Michigan so there are a few cases here but not many at all.... I realize ferrets are illegal in places (which is dumb they are not even a good host for Rabies according to my vet) so not a lot out there on it, but I'd be curious to see what the fatality rate is for reactions in dogs to the Vac compared to actual cases......

| That was one reason I wanted to look up the actual cases of rabies, does the risk of the vacc. outweigh the risk of actually coming into contact w/ a rabid animal ...if your pet is almost exclusively in your home or in your yard it seems to me the risk is almost nil....the law shouldn't require you to get the shot, it should be up to each individual.... |

Bella Boo & Diggy Too! Donating GS Member | But can't mosquitoes transfer Rabies??? That is the only thing I can think of that would effect mainly indoor dogs/animals. But advantix claims to repel mosquitoes so I guess you could also prevent that too....hmmmmm I vaccinated my oldest ferret once, then after discussing it with my Vet, he didnt com eout and say dont vac the second at all and stop with the older one but he hinted around to it and seemed okay with me not doing it....I mean if he is the one treating them and handling them at risk of getting bit when they get REALLY mad at him....you'd think he would suggest the vac if he felt at risk....and they did go for walks and were exposed to outdoors in summer. No advantix either they used cats frontline plus (1/2 doses).
