| I Need YourHelp with Frontline Medication! Last month I gave all three of my dogs their Frontline dosage. Biscuit who is 10 pounds gets the full dose, Muffin who is 5 pounds gets half a dose and when I gave CoCo (3 pounds) her half dose she immediately started acting really strange and then started foaming at the mouth A LOT!! This happened within 5 minutes of giving her the medicine. This was the first time she had gotten this medicine and even tho she was 11 months old at the time she obviously had a bad reation from it. I picked her up and put her in the kitchen sink and started running water all over her to rinse the meds off of her. She was fine within a minute or so. I called the vet and he said that I should NEVER give a dog half a dose no matter what size they are. I asked him how can a 5 pound dog get the same amount as a 10 pound dog? He said that it doesn't make any difference. As far as CoCo's reaction he asked me if she had been running around before getting the meds (thus the foaming at the mouth). I said no she hadn't. He suggested that I bring her in and he give her the medicine and see what happens. If she has a reaction at least she would be at the vet's office. The problem is, I'm scared to death to give her this medicine again. She's so tiny and I don't want anything to happen to her. And if I take her in to the vet, he will give her the full dose!! I asked if there was an alternative medicine that I could give her and he said there wasn't. What should I do??? Do any of you have alternative suggestions for flea and tick control because it's time for their meds again. I appreciate any help I can get.

| Of course theres an alternative why would he say that? theres so many flea and tick medicines out there i'll name a few.. http://www.k9advantix.com/ http://www.revolutionpet.com/default.html I use Proticall...http://www.healthypets.com/prinfordo.html and then theres a few cheaper brands like hartz Maybe its an allergic reaction? My chihuahua is allergic to Proticall..so we don't use any meds on him. Have you checked the symptoms of allergic reactions should be on the box ? I hope your furbaby feels better edit: you said you also give muffin half dose? is she okay? Last edited by Marcellacml; 04-23-2007 at 02:27 PM. |

| I pulled this off a website for you... Summary Fipronil is a topical insecticide. It kills adult fleas and larvae, ticks, and chewing lice. It comes in two forms, a liquid that is applied to the skin along the back of dogs and cats, or a spray. If ingested, may see drooling. If irritation at the application site lasts for more than several hours, contact your veterinarian. Some animals may become hypersensitive (allergic) to fipronil. http://www.peteducation.com/article....articleid=1419 |

| That's ridiculous that your vet said that only giving her half caused her reaction...Obviously your dog had a bad reaction to it, why would the vet suggest putting her through that again? The fact that you only gave her half is not what caused her to have a reaction like that. Many vets actually do say to only give half if they're really small dogs. Some dogs have bad reactions to some of those flea and tick medications...

| Mine will not give Lacey any type of medication full dose and has commented that it makes no sense to give a 5lb dog the same dosage as a large dog. Now as far as Frontline goes, I give both the dosage for small dogs without any problems. I agree it sounds like somehow a small amount was ingested. Incidentally, my vet also gave me her cell phone number in case my yorkies react to a vaccination. I really appreciate the extra attention and care she gives because Lacey will get a little feverish when she gets her annual shots. There are many choices out there, so I would address this issue with my vet or change, depending on prior experience. |

| I actually asked my vet about just giving emma half the doseage for k9 advantix as she only weighs 4 lbs but he told me to use it all or it would n't work right. I was so worried about using it all I had seen several people on here say they only used half a dose, but she didn't have any reaction to it and it has worked great.

| I would be pretty upset with my vet if I were you. It sounds like she had an allergic reaction so it is a good thing you only used half and washed it off right away. Do an online search for allergic reactions to flea meds. Some of the symptoms are lethargy, itching, running around like mad, hiding, hair loss, foaming at the mouth, seizures. Some dogs have even died. The reaction can get worse and happen faster with each application. Some dogs will have a reaction to the ingredient of one flea and tick med. but not the other kinds so you might be able to find one she doesn't have a reaction to. Have dish soap on hand. I usually see Dawn recommended. It cuts through the oil and gets it off better. I would try natural preventions first or if the fleas and ticks aren't that bad where you live you might not have to use anything at all. I don't. I wash his beds every week, vacuum a lot, comb him and check for fleas every day. Last year I found one flea on two seperate occasions but killed them and had no other problems. Best of luck and really look into this for your little one's sake. It can be very serious.

| First of all, I would never use Hartz, it has been known to cause even worse reactions. And I am not crazy about Advantix either as there have been problems with it as well. I would suggest going with all natural flea preventatives. I am going to be trying that as well with my cocker spaniel as she has an allergy to flea medicine, not nearly as bad as yours had. I can't believe that your vet said it was because you gave her half the dose. And then wanted you to bring her in so he could expose her to it again!!:eek And what he said about no other alternatives is a big lie. I think it is time to switch vets, he honestly doesn't sound like a good vet.

| Think about it...These products say not to allow contact with human skin and if it gets on you to wash it off..This is what we're putting on our furbaby's skin. Your baby did not have to ingest it to have a bad reaction to it. In fact, if you do a google search I'm sure you'll be able to find that awhile back cats were seizing and dying from flea medication(Hartz, I believe, but don't quote me).

| How can a half dose cause a reaction where a full dose wouldn't that is ridiculous. I beleive I would call other vets and ask them about it. It doesn't make sense that a 3 pound dog needs the same dosage as a 20 pound dog. |

| Thanks everybody for your replies. I think my vet is an idiot too! I've never been real happy with him and now I KNOW that it's time to change vets for sure! I'm never going to give CoCo that medicine again and I'm going to try to find a natural alternative for all three of them. It just doesn't make sense to put those chemicals on our furbabies. Thanks again!
