Slow growing coat... Jo-Jo is 6 months old and healthy but his coat is thin and I think it grows too slowly. It's probably grown about an inch in 2 months...is that considered slow? When I first got him his hair was rather dry and dull looking but I switched him to Innova dry food and Wellness canned food and he's starting to look better. Is there anything else I can do to help from a nutritional standpoint? I don't want a conditioner or anything topical to create the shine...I want it to be a healthy shine because he's getting everything he needs. Maybe he's growing taller and his hair hasn't caught up so it just looks like it isn't growing! I guess I shouldn't complain though because he doesn't tangle at all. Is he still in the 'ugly duckling' stage of coat changes at 6 months?

There are coat supplements that you can buy, most are made up of the omega fatty acids. There are dogs that have a slower growing coat, I only know this because I once called on a puppy and that is why she was selling him. I guess they want them to grow a little faster to compete in the shows. But I dont know if an inch in 2 months is normal or slow to be honest. In any case I can only tell you that there are plenty of coat supplements out there. If his hair is dry you may want to try the Salmon oil, it worked well for my shepherd. But there are LOTS of them out there. good luck Last edited by diva pup; 05-31-2005 at 06:11 PM.

Thank you. Are these suppliments available at pet supply stores or only through my vet? Also, what about a scrambled egg once a week or something like that?

You can buy it at your pet stores but it is cheaper to go to www.kvvet.com or www.jefferspet.com They have a good selection and much better prices even with shipping charges usually.

Gucci's hair also seems to grow slowly. I started giving her scramble eggs which she loves. I also started using Missing link supplement.

Oh I wanted to add that in one of my books it does say that lots of times the skimpiest puppy coat will be the most luxurious silk adult coat And if that doesnt make you feel better google this-how to grow hair on a doorknob (i am not kidding) it is a lowchen site and their is an actual recipe for helping hair growth!! It uses the alpha omega supps and other stuff including peanut butter!! At any rate it is a great site with lots of info

Donating YT 14K Club Member | Royal Canin Yorkshire has a little book that came with the bag of food. I cannot find my book at the time, but I distinctly remember reading in there about the Yorkshire's hair. It states in the book that a yorkie's hair grows 3/4 inch a month. I know that my yorkies' hair does not grow that fast. |

I'm so relieved!! I thought it was just Mojito. I'm just dying to get his hair into a topknot and we're just not there yet. I was worried that his coat was growing in too slowly. I know it's not his diet because he eats better than we do but I'm glad to hear about supplements -- must go get some this week. Thank goodness for this site!! Such a lifesaver. YorkieTalk.com ROCKS!
