| Snorting / reversed sneezing or allergies? Coco has just started to hack like she is going to cough something up. The thing is she doesn't cough anything up. It's almost like a snorting. Max has done the same thing ( I think ) - except they sound VERY different. Any idea what this is and why she does it? Seems to be worse at night. We have a vet appointment for Friday , but it makes me think we should go earlier. thanks! |

| Katy does this too. It scared me in the begining. We went to the vet and they said it was reverse sneezing. We try to cover her nose when she starts. That will ususally stop it. Quote:

Donating YT 3000 Club Member | Bengi sometimes makes those weird noises, like reversed sneezing, at night, when he gets cold, so then I put the blankie and he stops. Also, he might do it during the day when something bothers him in his throat. Like some hair, or a little leaf, or something like that that got stuck in his throat. |

| Maggie starting doing this back in January. I took her to the vet because when shes it bad sometimes she acts like she just cant breath and her legs wont hold her up sometimes. they just start spreading apart for her to lay down and not under control either. then she stops. He said it could be reverse sneezing or allergies but it might be asthma. He gave me a bottle of tablets cut in fourths. the prescription bottle is kinda light typing and wore down but it looks like it is called aminophyline, not sure from the p over exactly how its spelled. anyway, it is for her to take 3 times a day. I gave them to her for about 3 days and she just quit and hasnt been having any more problems since that, till yesterday. Last night she had 2 or 3 bad spells with her breathing. I gave her one yesterday evening, when she first started it again. I gave her two today and i'll give her another at 8 pm. I hope this clears it up in a couple of days like before. If not and she dont get better, Im gonna have to take her back I guess and have them test her for allergies or asthma. She really gave me a scare 2 times last night and we made her sleep with us last night just to make sure we heard her if she had any spells during the night. We usually put her in her zip bed at night during the week and shes just started sleeping with us on weekends this past month. Hubby was scared she would wake up when he did so early in the morning to go to work and not want to go back to bed. But she didnt this morning. he said she was laying curled up in a little ball at my chest and thats where she was when I woke up about 8 . she was still snoozed out. she hasnt had spells as bad today so i'm hoping the medicine works . But if anyones dog does it bad, my advice is take them on to the vet and dont just hope its reverse sneezing. at least maybe you'll get some medicine for it or you might not worry as bad. I know It still scared me when she does it bad.

YT 500 Club Member | We just had a scare with our little girl. She has also done this very strange sound (our vet said maybe reverse sneezing) but she does it more when she pulls hard on her leash. However, she did it during the night Friday night. Tonight, she started walking very strangely, as if she didn't have good control of her legs. Then she started shaking when my husband picked her up. Last year we took her to the emergency vet with similar symptoms but she had also vomited. He thought that she may have had a seizure then, but he didn't see it as she was over it by the time we got there. This episode lasted less than five minutes. I can't believe how much we worry about these little darlings. |

| Ask your vet to check for collapsed trachea....my Tara who is barely 4lbs has that and it was said to be bad....and she wouldn't make four. She is seven and very healthy - if you lower their head downwards and massage their throat gently, it releases the colapse in the airway, and they are fine. Poor Tara had an op at one year old to check for this, and it was a waste of money, as I know myself what to do now, and she stops coughing. I never leave her on her own, just in case of an episode - but that is the only thing. She is happy and heathly It is caused by not enough protein in the mother and not enough going to the pups, when she is carrying them. I told the breeder, and she was mortified. Tara was from the 6th litter of a five yr old dog, who they said was now retiring ! She's gorgeous and a model though - and very fit and healthy as long as I lower her head during coughing Tara below, and left in avatar pic. | I thought it might be that from where they inserted the tube in her throat in Dec to spay her. But he checked her for that and said it wasnt her trachea. Last night I had already picked her up and ran to the bedroom with her to wake hubby to get up and see about her, that one lasted longer than usual and I was scared. So bout time I got in there she quit so I didnt wake him. She wont open her mouth when she does that and sometimes I squeeze her mouth open so she can get air and she quits. I wouldnt think that would help in an asthma attack.

| Did they mention it could be a grass seed stuck up her nose or somewhere awkward in her throat/tear duct ? Maybe an allergy right enough if no obstruction obvious. I would try the head down and gentle throat massage if she goes like that again, as it might work, whatever the cause....and believe me I know how frightening it is to see your baby struggle to get breath Good luck in finding a cause soon Debra x x x x |

| My chihuahua Chico has been doing that since he was a puppy. He is now 13 years old. The vet told me it was "backwards sneezing", which sounded like a copout to me. That sounds so easy. He said because smaller dogs are closer to the floor, all the dust that gets kicked up from the floor and ground goes in their eyes and noses, then into the throat. That is why their eyes run, and they do this "backwards sneezing". He has been doing it since he was about 2 years old, and he is 13 now. He hasn't had any major health issues, except for the past 4 years he has been taking mild seizures, but I dont think that they are connected, but who knows. It scares me a lot when he has them. I am so afraid to lose him. Besides that, his "bw sneezes" are very loud, and last for quite awhile, but nothing really bad. We give him some water, rub his throat, and he is usually fine. Don't know if that will help to ease anybodys thoughts, or help them out. I also think if you think it could be something else and you are still worried... MOTHERS INSTINCTS ARE USUALLY RIGHT! Sometimes we can worry a lot, but there is no such thing as over worrying when it comes to your baby! Take them to the vet if youre not sure. Thats what I'd say.

| My Yorkie, Savannah, does the same thing. My vet said she is just clearing her sinuses. His does the same thing. He demonstrated the sound and he had it right on. You think the dog is going to hack up a lung, because she uses her whole body doing this. It's nothing to worry about. I think it's a Yorkie trait. My puppy, who is 11 months old has done it a time or two. I do think it has something to do with allergies, too, but he didn't feel a need to treat it. |

| Mine do it on occasion. What has worked for me is making sure their head is tilted down (make sure they aren't looking up at you) rub their throat, speak to them in a soothing voice. That way if they start to get weak legs you are there to support them. Thank God it has worked for me so far and we've never had a really bad episode....knock on wood.
