| Low Protein DogFood , Please tell us which you feed your Pet? For those who have dogs with MVD or Livershunt. Can you list what you feed your dog? I was given prescription Science diet L/D or I/D Homemade recipe found in Dr Tobias website Please add to the list. I have tried other dry food with low protein but my mind is blank right now! lol Right now Cookie is getting tired of Evanger's canned food. I have a question ! Why does a Lamb/rice dry dog food have like 24% protein but the canned Lamb/rice have 9% protein? I give him Evangers canned food and he loved it the first week and now I notice he doesnt eat it all . He eats very little of it. The ingredients have chicken, rice, carrots, potatoes etc... It's all human grade food,no preservatives,no artificial colors etc. It seems to me that Chicken and Turkey are high protein foods!? So how does it show 9% protein? I am interested in trying other foods and hopefully find at least 2 foods that I can switch every other week so he won't get tired of the same thing everyday. Leaving alone and hoping he gets hungry enough does NOT work for Cookie. When he doesnt want to eat, he wont eat for 2-3 days . I've never let him go 24 hrs or more without eating, I just won't do that to him. I end up giving him white rice small amount 1tsp chopped boiled egg, vitamin E oil, fish oil, multivitamin Please add to the list. I tried going online to Petsmart which has a large variety of specialty food but I cant just enter Low Protein... Thanks! Genie, Cookie,Lola & Angel |

| Protein Content Check the moisture content. I believe you will find the miniscule amount of chicken or turkey in ALOT of liquid (water my guess). Sorry, I can't help with the diet issue. |

| Genie, that food could make Cookie very, very sick...He really liked it at first because it tasted really good. But liver compromised dogs are finicky eaters because they stop eating foods that make them feel sick. It's actually very high in protein because it's like 80% moisture. You need to calculate the amount of protein on a dry matter basis. Example: If it is 9% protein on the can, and it has 80% moisture, then you take 9 (the amt of protein) divided by 20 (the reciprocal of the 80% moisture) and that = 45% protein on a dry matter basis. When a dry food says 24%...that is calculated on a dry matter basis. Canned foods are much higher in protein than dry foods.

| As far as low protein foods go, Miko is on prescription Royal Canin Hepatic LS 14...But there are other very good foods to feed that are low, non-animal protein that are safe for MVD and liver compromised dogs that don't show symptoms. -Solid Gold Holistique Blendz (18% protein) -Natural Balance Vegetarian (but be careful because natural balance just had a recall) I'll find some more for you, and I'll post them!

| He's stopped eating any low protein dry foods within 1-2 days also.So it's not just that he stops because he feels sick, he just acts like I'm feeding him crap lol and walks away from it.I have some Solid Gold Holistique Blendz leftover that I gave away because he did not eat it at all. I hope more people post their low protein foods so I can see what else is available. I will go this week to Petsmart in another town that is huge , they had such a huge variety of dog foods, it was like 4-6 isles of dogfood brands. I do remember seeing Royal Canin there also..I plan to make it trip for myself so I can spend at least more than an hour reading labels, ingredients Genie,Cookie,Lola& Angel |

| Miko hated the Solid Gold Holistique Blendz too! I think it's the fish meal in it that he didn't like. Maybe the Avoderm Vegetarian would be a good one, I think it's 18-20% protein. Good luck, Genie, and let me know if you find a good one!!

| I will see if they have the Royal Canin Hepatic and avoderm ,if I find the right ones in Petsmart. I had to cook him some food yesterday that he ate it all up lastnight. Of course today when I fed him the same food,he licked it and walked away. He did finish it around 4 hrs later. I waited until late today and gave him some more and he ate all of it. It's one recipe our vet gave us. He has shown no sypmtoms at all , thank God for the past year. He's as playful as ever, poops good, pees good... I will let you guys know what I find and how he likes it! I will just save the left over cans of Evanger's for his little brother Angel. Genie |

| It always worries me when Miko gets finicky like that, but if he won't eat his food, I do the same thing as you, I cook for him. LOL We do whatever it takes for our babies What stinks is that you can't get the Royal Canin Hepatic without a prescription, but it really helps Miko. He actually loves this dog food and he's the pickiest eater ever! It's only 14% protein, so I supplement a little more protein to his diet by giving him cottage cheese or something like that, but not too much so he doesn't show symptoms of HE. Since Cookie doesn't get symptoms, you could probably add even more "safe" protein than I add to Miko's. Good luck tomorrow!

| Haven't tried that one...I've seen it and it is supposed to be pretty good for regular dogs, but I didn't know they had a low protein, non animal protein diet. That would be neat!

| They had the Royal Canin Hepatic LS but only a HUGE bag! Do they sell these in smaller bags? Like at least 6 lbs 10 lb bags? A 17.5 lb bag is way too much and really would take Cookie like 9 months or more to finish. That's assuming he will eat it! The bag was $34.99, I could have gotten a prescription at Petsmart, all they had to do was call my vet and ask her.I did'nt do that because the bag was just too big. I think that having a dry food for so long ,might not be so fresh after so many months? I seen the Avoderm, they do not carry the vegetarian one I had to start Cookie on low protein ASAP and had no choice and gave in. I got a small bag of Hills adult /Protein 16% .I was at Petsmart for 1 1/2 hrs and went through each isle and looked at every label! I wish they had samples to try for Royal Canin! Also I looked at the label of Royal Canin Hepatic LS and the first 3 ingredients weren't that great either Rice, ground corn, chicken fat. The ingredients were a bit better than the Hills though... I wonder how can I get a 6 lb bag! I will search online to see if I can buy it online... Genie |

| Hi Genie, the only bags of the Hepatic LS they sell at our Petsmart are the 17.5 lb bags...I empty the bag and put it in tupperware so that it stays fresh. It usually takes Miko 3-4 months to finish the whole bag of food, I think. The ingredients are better than Hill's, in my opinion. What I like about it, is that it has increased amounts of zinc and stuff that is beneficial to dogs with MVD. I think that if your dog does not like the food, you can return it. Miko had a terrible reaction with the Hill's (seizing and stuff), and they let me take it back. So you could try it, and if he doesn't like it, take it back
