| Allergy vs. staph infection My Meghan (5 mos old) started biting her beautiful pink belly several weeks ago.....developed a rash....took her to vet who said it was a staph infection and put her on antibiotic and benadryl. She still has it so I returned to vet, who continued her on antibiotic and benadryl and wants her to remain on it daily for 7 days AFTER the little bumps have disappeared. I understand these skin irritations on Yorkies are common and if allergies, can follow the dog all its life and get worse as the dog gets older. I was also given medicated shampoo which I must leave on her for 7 minutes while wet. Not easy. Anyone have a super solution for getting a tiny pill down a Yorkies throat without making her hate you? She has already wised up to me hiding it in food, and she's not eating properly. With all the bad news about dog food, I have taken to preparing her home cooked meals....anyone have some great recipes you would like to share? She has also been placed on Amino Acid squirted on her food every other day, and a pet vita-tab. Sounds like an awful lot for a 5 month old baby.....but she is SO worth it. Will look for replys with much gratitude.... Kat n Bob in Florida |

| My dog doesn't get very many treats (she has allergies) so anything i offer her by hand usually just gets gulped including her meds. SO far she has taken Clavamox, Clindamyacin, Baytril, Vanectyl P and her heartworm meds all just on their own. Just recently she needed a different antibiotic called Zenequin which she spits out so I have to hide it in her food. Have you tried just telling her Treat and handing it to her? |

| Do you free feed her or is she on a schedule? If she's on a schedule, she will get more excited about treats (even with meds in them). I tear a small piece of thin sliced turkey meat and give one with out the med. Then I give a second one that the med is hidden in. I make a big deal and tease them before I give the first piece. The anticipation kills them and when they finally get it - GULP! It's gone! Staph infection is usually a result of allergies so you really want to keep a close eye on her. At the first sign of the itchies, get her on the Benidryl and stop when she is not itchy anymore. Make sure the food has no corn or wheat and don't give her any dairy products. Jazzie is on Natural Balance Duck & Potato and her allergies has really been cut back. Since your kiddo is only 5 mo., the kibbles will be too big so use a food processor or even a cheap coffee bean grinder and break them down to a more manageable size if you want to try the food. It's good for puppies and adults. Good Luck!
