| What does Urine Crystals look like??? I know this sounds like a stupid question, but I have a 5 month old little male furbaby..... he uses newspaper and pee pee pads.... when he pottys on the newspaper ( breeder trained him to newspaper so I still put one down over pee pad ) sometimes it looks like very very very faint glitter.... I don't see it on the pee pad .... and not always on the paper.... I have to look very close to see it at all.... are these urine crystals?? or is it a reaction to the ink in the paper mixed with urine?? Any Ideas? the pee pad looks okay. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Cali had crystals in her urine but I didn;t see them. The vet told me after looking at a urine sample under a microscope. I do know that Cali did get irritated down there from the crystals so maybe you can see them. If you can get a urine sample the vet can check it out while you wait. Good luck.

| I am wondering too! Every couple of months, Roxy will pee on the throw rugs. She is nervious, so I always thought that she just did it b/c maybe I went down stairs quickly without her. Just last week she pee'd on a 'body pillow' that I had on the floor for them to camp out on with the sun coming in through the window. I left it there and went to work. When I cam home, sure enough she pee'd on it. It was wet so I put it in the laundry room and was planning to wash it. The next day, when I turned on the light in the laundry room, the pillow was glittering where the pee had dried. Is that normal, or do you think something is wrong? |

| When Ralphie had crystals in his urine a few months back, I never saw them but his urine was blood stained. That was my only indication that something was wrong with his bladder and it turned out he had not only crystals but calcium oxalate stones and he needed surgery to remove it all. He's 5 yrs old and he's fine now. I do remember his urinating on the floor and on the rug when he got excited but absolutely no glittery effect was there. I don't think you can see crystals. I'd still ask the vet. Last edited by irbrenda; 03-30-2007 at 06:04 AM. Reason: typo |

| I can see when Miko passes stones...Crystals, I'm not sure about. If you're concerned at all, it doesn't hurt to just get a urine sample and take it into the vet's office. They'll be able to tell you

| I called the vet to see if they needed to see him or just a urine sample.... they told me you are suppose to have teeney tiny crystals .... that it will sometime look like glitter when it dries.... so I feel a whole lot better now... he is fine.... I have just been reading about stones and crystalized urine and was afraid that is what I was seeing on the newspaper.... |

| Stones are created when the urine is oversaturated with crystals. In Ralphie's case, it was too much protein which created high calcium levels. Yorkies are one breed prone to either oxalate stones or struvite stones. In my dog's case his urine was too acidic. I now use PH test strips to make sure his urine level stays around 6.5 to 7.5 which is the neutral zone, and does not become too alkaline which could cause struvite stones. He is now on Hill's Prescription U/D diet to keep the protein levels low. AFter the surgery, I was given a few stones in a jar to see what he was suffering from. They were like sharp jagged-edged little lava stones....must have been very painful but he never showed any signs of discomfort. |

| Well, Miko's body produces stones because he has liver problems...His stones are ammonium urate and they're acidic. Not all dogs with liver shunts have stones, but ammonium urate is a common stone for dogs with liver shunts. If that makes any sense...As long as his liver has these problems, he will continue to produce the stones...He had P/U surgery so that he doesn't pee out of his penis anymore...They made another larger hole and rerouted things so that he can pass these stones through this larger hole without pain... He was also put on Hill's prescription u/d, but Miko had a very bad reaction to it...He seized after meals, and it's supposed to be safe for his liver, so we put him back on his old food that's specifically for liver compromised dogs and added a supplement to his daily regimen of meds to see if this helps.

| I'm not thrilled with the Hill's U/D either. I'm not sure if he gained weight from the food or the neutering, or a combination of both. I'd love to go back to Life's Abundance or Merrick, but all that high protein food is what might have done his bladder in! So, I'm stuck for now, unless I give him medication for the rest of his life so he can eat his old diet again. I have to watch his coat as it had gotten very very dry and it's improved since adding the Missing Link. It's a wait and see. |
