| Help! I got my first yorkie baby a week ago, She is the most precious thing.....but i think she is a picky eater. She was eating pedigree puppy food, wet and dry, but on wed she wouldn't eat. Well I tried giving her Wellness super5 puppy mix.....she ate it. But now she wont. She had her 9 weeks shots on friday, so maybe she just doesn't feel good????? So with her not eating all day yesterday, I decided to make her some chicken and rice. Well needless to say she cleared her bowl and begged for more. So my question is, With her being a puppy, How can I cook for her at home and still know she is getting the nutirents she needs? Does anyone have any good recipes, any advice or tips to offer........ thanks.

| First off she should have stayed with her mom till around 12 weeks of age. Next, puppies should NOT have shots till they are at least 14 weeks of age. They are protected till around then, and giving them shots too early compromises their immune system. http://www.wholisticanimal.com/petvaccinations.html http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/front/1377004 http://dogs-cats-and-more.com/Vets_R...cinations.html A puppy that young needs to eat 5 or 6 tiny meals a day, and also have a tube of Nutri-Cal on hand and give her about a dime size once a day. |

| Hello And Congratulations On Your New Puppy...... My Harvey Is 1 Yr Old And He To Had Been A Fussy Eater. He Seems To Be A Lot More Settled Now On His Food. He Eats Ceaser Refined - And Though I Understand There Are Better Foods For Him - He Is Happy To Eat It, And We Do Suppliment It With Cooked Chicken And Beef At Times Too. He Will Only Eat His Food Warmed Up, And Only Eats Once A Day (always Has Done - He Is Never Hungry In A Morning). He Does Have A Doggy Sausage And A Small Doggy Bone Biscuit. During The Morning And Afternoon - I Used To Worry About Him Not Eating Sooooooo Much. But He Is Really Healthy And Happy At 3.5 Lbs, So We Must Be Doing Ok. I Would Try Warming Your Babys Food Up And See If That Helps - They Do Seem To Like It Warm............. And Try Not To Change The Food Drastically As This Can Upset Them. I Also Brought Harvey Home At 8 Weeks And He Had His First Shots A Few Days Later And Then His Last Ones 2 Weeks After That - This Was Done On My Vets Recommendation And Harvey Is A Very Healthy And Happy Bundle Of Fun... I Think There Are Differing Views On When A Puppy Should Leave There Mummies - I Only Know From My Own Experience. I Am Sure Other People Will Advise Also. Good Luck.......

Well FIRST OF ALL i asked for advice.......not criticism.............. I got a wonderful puppy from a wonderful breeder and we will be going back in 2 weeks to get more shots. She is perfectly healthy and active. I have never had a puppy that didn't get shots at 8 weeks.

| Don't feed 3 different things - that will upset her stomach for sure. Throw away the Pedigree. Wellness is fine, but if I remember right the kibble is huge so maybe smash it up a little? Don't just feed chicken and rice, it does not have enough nutrients. If you want to start cooking at home you need to look at supplements and variety and all sorts of stuff. That will take more research than you can do in a few days. Once in a while for a tummy ache is fine, but they can't eat chicken and rice every day. My best ADVICE is to go buy some Merrick canned. It's really wet, Wingaling is my favorite, and you can even mix that with a high quality kibble. There's no way your dog will turn it down and it's just like feeding chicken (it's WHOLE chicken wings) but it has all the nutrients your dog needs. www.merrickpetcare.com Good luck!

| I start giving all my puppies shots at 8 weeks also. I have never heard of the 12 week rule before. My vet says 8 weeks. |

| Puppies get a *series* of shots a few weeks apart because you don't KNOW when the mom's immunity stops. Vaccinating before that time is useless, but you don't want to wait too long after the immunity stops to vaccinate. That's why puppies get multiple shots.

| Your baby sounds adorable and I'm sure you'll be a good mommy. Here is a nice website by a breeder that will give you lots of new puppy info: http://yorkiecare.homestead.com/rules.html We have a picky eater too and when she was real little (she's now 6 mos.) she was just awful. For weeks at a time when she was teething, she would eat one food one day, then turn up her nose the next. We had more opened packages and cans than we could fit in our kitchen. We finally found that she liked Cesars with the orange top (can't remember the flavor). Now, I know Cesars isn't considered high quality, but frankly, we just needed her to eat, no matter what. We also found a recipe on this forum to feed them with a syringe, if they won't eat on their own. I was afraid if we didn't feed her every 4 hrs. that she might go into a hypoglycemic attack. So this recipe has been a sanity saver, because we always have the emergency back-up feeding method when all else fails. We use a plastic (so she can't hurt herself if she bites it)baby medicine syringe that you can get at the drug store to give babies their medication. At first we had to put the syringe in the corner of her mouth and gently squeeze the mush in that way, but now she licks it voluntarily. Here's the recipe: 1/2 cup half-and-half (or goat's milk for more digestability) 1/2 cup instant baby cereal (we use mostly rice and occasionally oatmeal if she's constipated) 1 entire jar of Gerber's strained baby meat (anything but turkey) 1 tsp. Karo syrup (or maple syrup if no Karo is available) Just warm up the half-and-half, stir in the instant cereal and the jar of meat and the karo syrup. You can add water if it's too thick. We refrigerate this in a bowl and just take out a few spoonfuls at a time to warm up in the microwave and feed her. Remember to test the temp. before filling your syringe and feeding it to your pup. I'm sure she'll get less fussy over time. Just be patient. I know how it is. Oh, and you can try giving your pup some very small chunks of fruit such as apple or banana. Also they seem to like little pieces of baby carrots, raw, and raw snap beans. This is just to give the puppy more nutrition. Just be careful of too much of the beans as it seems to make loose stools. Last edited by Sweetums; 03-28-2007 at 04:08 PM. |

| Hi, I also got my puppy, Abby, from Julia. I have talked to you before. Our puppies have different mothers, but I'm not sure about the fathers. Abby will eat anything that can't get up and get out of the way. She is exactly the opposite of my other baby, Gracie who is 14 months old. Gracie is very picky and I have been feeding her chicken and rice for some time now. I keep Purina Puppy Chow in a bowl for both of them and Gracie will eat that sometimes, although I know she should be on a food for adult dogs. I have bought so many different kinds of food for her, but she turns her nose up at everything. Seems the more I pay for it and the better the ingredients, the less likely she is to eat it. She also refuses any kind of supplements I buy for her. Anyway, just be careful that you don't get Rainbow hooked on the chicken and rice the way Gracie is. By the way, Rainbow is a real cutie. What is her daddy's name?
