Water consumption question..... Is there a guideline or rule of thumb about how much water a puppy should be drinking? Jo will be 6 months old in a few days and he weighs 2 pounds 9 oz. I keep a water bottle on the door of his kennel and I put a stainless steel dish of fresh water next to his food every morning. When we had our female here with him I was filling water bottles 2 to 3 times a day and I always saw them both drinking but now that he's here alone I don't see him drinking very often, just a few laps here and there but not much at any one time. He shows no signs of being dehydrated, he's healthy, the plumbing is working fine and he has a good appetite. He eats Innova puppy dry food and I just started giving him Wellness canned puppy food a couple days ago, either mixed with his dry food or as a midday meal. He loves baby carrots so I thought about putting some carrot juice in his water to see if he'd drink a little more. Should I be worried?

Just make sure to keep an eye out for dehydration...Check his tongue and his gums and make sure they're a good color.

| Kelsey doesnt drink very much either. She is 6 months. Her pee is also very yellow and stinks! I encourage her to drink more and i have to pick up her water dish and put it near her mouth or immitate drinking it for her to drink it sometimes. She is healthy though, teeth and weight are compleltly fine. I dont know what to do?

Jo's tongue and gums are pink and healthy looking, eyes are shiny, coat is shiny, skin isn't dry and no strong urine smell. Am I just being paranoid because he drank so much more while the other puppy was here?

I recently had a vet visit and my puppy wasn't drinking at all, was having to force him. Vet said if they are eating canned food they are fine as it is 70% water.

Thanks Mojo. Jo does get canned food but for one meal his dry food is mixed in and the other is about a tablespoon for a midday snack...he has dry food down all the time. I just started giving him the canned food on Monday...I'll have to keep a close eye on him and see exactly how much he is drinking now that he has the canned food.

| I dont feed my dog any moist food. Is that bad? I hear it makes her poop's more mushier and stinkier?

We didn't always feed Jo canned food, just dry, but we wanted to suppliment him with something else while he's teething, it seemed like he was having a little trouble breaking the hard food right now. We'd also like him to put on some weight and thought the canned might help and it also provides a little variety so he doesn't get bored with his food. Feeding dry or canned is simply a choice, some only feed dry, some will mix it up and some only feed canned. Some brands may affect the stool but we haven't seen any difference in Jo since he started eating the Wellness canned food.

It he doesnt seem dehidrated and his gums are the proper color I think he will be fine. Just make sure you provide him with water all the time and monitor him just to be in the safe side.

Thanks for the reassurance, Marie. Yes, he has a full water bottle and a fresh bowl of water everyday so it's there if he wants it.

I set out a wter bowl for Chewy every day and he doesn't drink much either but he seems fine. As long as they know where they can get it and it's there when they go to, it I think you will be fine.

Thanks again everyone. Jo was drinking plenty last night...maybe he doesn't drink so much because he's so small or I just don't notice when he does drink...I'm probably just watching him too close
