Default Baby Asprin

Has anyone giving there dogs baby asprin?
My boy dega has a problem with his anal glands and sometimes he gets red swollen around the glands. I took him to the vet today she give him a shot but it doesnt seem like it is working. She said that the shot takes 6-8 hours.

Could i give him some asprin just to relieve his pain?

Thanks
Stephanie

I'm thinking no. I remember asking the same question about my cat years ago, and the vet said aspirin would kill a cat. Seeing as yorkies are smaller than most cats, I'm inclined to think it would not be a good idea.

As a rule, I'd never give any of my pets human medication unless a vet specifically said it was ok.

As long as it's enteric coated you should be just fine.
Regarding the dose, you REALLY should call your vet and ask that.

The average recommendation is "half the adult dose"...but if you've got a tiny Yorkie or one that has other issues, he may decrease that by a quarter. The only way to know is to give him/her or another local vet a call.

asprin is ok for dogs but i'd call the vet to ask about dosage. Also i don't think you should use it just for an anal glad problem. the vet probably gave him a steriod shot so you don't want to give anything else.

If you need to give your baby something it should be liquid childrens Tylenol because a solid aspirin is to hard to gauge amount and the liquid is easier and safer. Call you vet and he can tell you how much. Someone on here had a amount by weight somewhwere but cant find it.

Dr Mike: My dog is a pure white 6 year old male german shephard. Both his parents were large dogs. He was the runt of the litter, which made him medium in size. In the last year, when it is cold outside, (we live in Colorado) he has problems getting up from a sitting or lying down position. He rises slowly and whines upon movement. No signs of the problem is apparent when weather is warm. He is very active. Runs alot and jumps alot. I cannot afford a visit to the vet, which is very high in our area. My question: How many aspirin can I give him to help with the pain and swelling. Thank you,

A: The dosage of aspirin for dogs is between 10 and 15mg/kg, given every 12 hours. This is roughly one aspirin tablet per 30 pounds of body weight every 12 hours. It is extremely important to pay attention to your dog's eating habits when administering aspirin. Dogs have no way to tell you their stomach is upset so you must watch for signs of this. If your dog stops eating while you are giving aspirin it is important to stop giving the aspirin. If any signs of gastric ulcers develop (like blood tinged vomiting or depression) it is important to stop the aspirin.
It is important in German shepherds to distinguish between degenerative joint diseases, such as hip dysplasia, and neurologic diseases, such as degenerative myelopathy. They can have very similar signs but have very different outcomes and somewhat different treatments. When you can afford to take your dog to the vet it would be a good idea.

Enteric Coated Aspirin
Q: I saw the Q&A on arthritis and your recommended treatment (aspirin). I have been giving my 45 lb black lab/pointer 250 mg of buffered aspirin w/ his food each day and it seems to help. I've heard that enteric coated aspirin is better than buffered. Do you agree. These tablets are harder to cut; would 325 mg be ok daily?
A: There have been one, or possibly two, studies done that indicate that enteric coated aspirin does not work well in dogs. Due to the differences in digestive processes dogs do not seem to be able to routinely digest the coating off the aspirin and many of the aspirin tablets are found whole in the stool. Obviously, if the coating isn't digested the aspirin is not effective. The dose for aspirin is approximately 10mg/lb of bodyweight every 12 hours. If less works, I'd use less. But if you need to, you can give your dog a whole 5 grain aspirin tablet twice a day with no problem.

Asprin is used as a anti-inflammatory too but it can cause bleeding problems if used too much. I know that some people give their dogs asprin on a regular basis for pain with out any problems. Like someone else said maybe you could use the enteric coated asprin so it doesn't upset his stomach, but if you have to cut the tablet in half then the enteric coating will not help. I know they make enteric coating baby asprin (81mg) but I don't what dose a small yorkie would take???

My Sassy is three and a half pounds. She got only two drops of INFANT tylenol (not childrens'). There is a difference. I wouldn't give anything at all without clearing it with the vet although infant tylenol probably couldn't hurt. They give that to babies with other medications.

All the best to you. It is soooo hard to know they are in pain.

Sorry, Didnt know they had the Infant Tylenol now, been ten years since I was a vet tech and we always used the childrens, So let me just put it this way you should talk to your vet and make up a First Aide Kit so if anything happens you will know what to do. I know we didnt like to give these little ones aspirin because it is a blood thinner. If you know your vet well he/she will help you put together everything according to "your" baby. You should always check with your vet before you give these little ones anything, their little systems are very delicate.
