| Do Yorkies lose their puppy fur? Do Yorkie babies lose their puppy fur and get new fur? I tried to search the forum for this topic but didn't find anythng. Tink's fur is falling out at an alarming rate and I can't seem to do anything about it. I switched her food 5 weeks ago, bought special shampoo from the vet, used hot oil treatments. I'm ready to buy her some Rogaine! The backs of her knees and tail are almost naked! HELP!! |

| Yorkie don't shed. They have hair. So the baby hair grows out and adult hair comes in. As a puppy matures, the color and the texture of their coat changes. It's cute when the adult hair starts to come in, it looks like when a person who dyes their hair needs a good touch up! Since your baby sounds like he is loosing a lot of her coat you may want to have him checked with the vet. There may be an underlining cause that need medical intervention. And get a second opinion from a different doctor. If anyone knows anything different from my post please advise. I may need to be better educated. Best wishes to both of you. Please post how things progress. You might want to post photos of your baby's condition for a better advise.

| Best advise is to talk with your vet. This could be a food allergy, flea allergy, scabies, or something metabolic that is causing the alopecia. For sure it is not normal. Check your dog's food and make sure it does not contain any corn or wheat. Rice is the best grain. Let us know what the vet says and how your baby is doing. I hope you find the cause soon!

| Here's a pic of her back leg. Couldn't get one of her tail. Although she is a Yorkiepoo, she has a wavey cotton coat and we are struggling with dry skin and matts. I'm using Mane Tame for the matts althugh I've ordered some Cowboy Magic too. I use Vet Solutions Aloe & Oatmeal shampoo that I got at the vet's. And she is on Nutro Puppy food which has no corn or wheat. The vet wasn't concerned because her blood work and skin scraping at last visit was good and said she would be fine. He's a good vet although his bedside manner needs a little help. I think he works with farm animals too much JK! But he was very good when I lost Indy! He doesn't have any Yorkie patients, I'm used to poodles and since Tink is a mix, I don't know how to help her. Anyone have any more ideas? Or should I just be patient a little longer and see if she improves? |

| I agree that she should be checked. It might be normal for her since she is mixed..........

| I'd take her to the vet. I don't think either poodles or yorkies would normally have spots that bald. Good luck & let us know what he says. |

| Could she be chewing it off? Aleopecia is a good call too. I have aleopecia and my hair falls out in clumps and leaves a bald spot anywhere from a size of a dime up to a half-dollar circle. There nothing that can be done about it but to ride it out. I used to get cotizone shots for it but stopped.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | My Pom was losing hair and they tested her for Hypoglycemia and Addison's disease. She had hypothyroidism and is now on 2 pills day and doing better. SHe was tired, losing hair and coughing alot. Maybe you can get blood tests done while she is at the vets. I hope they can figure it out and she gets better.

| Tink is home. I got her back at 7 this morning No sleeping in for me. She sounds much better, thank goodness. I told the vet what Patti said about hypothyroidism and the suggestions from all of you. He is doing the test for that and had done a skin scraping two weeks ago when I took her in for her shots - no bad results for that. So now we'll wait for these new tests. I called my frind Debbie who is a vet to see if she has any ideas. I'm waiting for her to call me back sometime today. She is so matted now from being in the crate for so long, I don't know what to do for her. It must be hurting her, cause now she is biting at the matts. I tried to comb some of them out - but OUCH! I'm working at them with my fingers and cut some of the icky ones out before they became too huge. I think I'm gonna have to call the groomer and get her cut really really short. |
