| Allergic to Chicken? I read somewhere that yorkies/dogs can be allergic to chicken. Anyone got any insight on that? My yorkie just had a litter and hasn't been eating as much, so i gave her chicken. But she already gets allergies, is there something else I could give her? Also, I started giving her cottage cheese yesterday. How much of that should I be giving her? How much is too much? Thanks guys! She's healthy and gets nutri-cal every day twice a day. She vomited twice since she had the pups (5 days ago). Today she seems back to her normal self again. I just wanna know for the future if the chicken is a no go for her. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Cali has been eating chicken all her life and she has allergies. I never even thought of that. I do have her down from 2 meals of chicken and 1 of dog food to 1 of chicken and 1 of dog food. I think I will try to keep her off the chicken for a few days and see if she stops scratching so much.

| Ground beef is fine. Most cooked meat (unseasoned) is fine. Do you know what she's allergic to or the general source (food, inhalent or contact)? I'm not sure how much cottage cheese is too much, but I've never given over a heaping tablespoon in a day for my oversized Yorkie.

| i've also heard of many dogs being allergic to chicken.. poor layla's skin is so dry that i feed her lamb formula just in case she is allergic to chicken... it is so hard to get rid of it everywhere (ie.. treats) and she loves it SO much when we have it for supper.. but we are doing our best to limit the amount. |

| No Cluck-Cluck For My Boys Either I have stopped feeding dog food to my boys for the last 2 months. I make home-prepared foods and they are mostly certified organic. My Wesley has been severely itching since I got him almost 2 years ago. I have tried 6 different commerical dog foods, and he has always itched, one time to infection. We tested for enviromental allergies, and he was fine. My vet also suggested the Science Diet canned, and I said absolutely not. I had noticed when feeding dog food, the chicken bases made him itch more. SciDi was chicken based. I told the vet that I am not playing around anymore and I have to find relief for my baby. I went to our local Whole Foods Market and stocked up on organic meats, beans, lentils, chickpea flour, walnuts, pumpkin, veges, pineapple, banannas. I lightly cook, just sear the outside of buffalo steaks, beef, venison, lamb, pork, and organ meats. I used to cook the veges, but now buy Honest Kitchens "Preference" dehydrated veges. I put organic ground flaxseed, kelp, sea salt, ground eggshell, olive, sunflower, or safflower oil mixed in thier food, the vege part with water, and 1/2 ml of alfalfa extract. I sometimes put in a tablespoon of cammomile tea. I give Thorne Research Canine Basic Nutients every other day. It's a great vitamin, mineral, and amino acid supplement. They have not had any grains, dairy, (eggs okay), garlic, soy, yeast, potatoes, lecithin, tomatoes. Just last week, I gave some Italian bread, and the next day, the intense itching began. I had to give benadryl and Bach's Rescue Remedy and extra alfalfa extract (detoxifier) for 3 days. He got better. Then I tried chicken, which they have not had for about a year (all the dog food was meat-based). Boom, the itching started again. Dogs do not have the enzyme to digest lactose in dairy products. I loved Innova Evo Red Meat food, but it has potatoe in it, and I think that was another culprit. I've done my "food testing" and "elimination diet", and I count on my motherly instincts and careful observations. My guys love white fish, (not salmon), sardines, and mackerel, too. I do not give omega-3 from fish, it also makes them itch. I use the ground flaxseed instead. I give only real meat/cod treats from Whole Life, Zuke's Basted Beef, Merrick's Texas Toothpicks, and Red Barn Bully Sticks. I make their own "cookies" from chickpea flour, pumkin, walnuts, eggs, walnut oil, pumpkin seed, a little seasalt, and sometimes some veges. I slow bake it, cut it into pieces, and bake it again. They wolf it down. Love it. In the beginning, it did take a lot of research and time to prepare their food, but now it's a snap. They love raw meat, or just seared. Eat all veges I give, and adore the taste of beans and lentils. I only make a 1/2 cup of these at a time in order to give variety everyday. No more itching, doggy smell. High energy and playfulness. Lotsa kisses, and they look so forward to meals. It's worth everything to see that. Instead of agonizing over which "DOG FOOD" to use, JUST USE FOOD.

| Dogs can definately be allergic to chicken. They can also be allergic to cottage cheese and beef. If your dog has bad allergies, your best bet is to go with a dog food that has "exotic" meats and fiber sources. An EXCELLENT food for dogs with allergies is Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish formula. Potatoes and sweet potatoes are an excellent fiber source for dogs with allergies. Duck and fish are excellent meat sources for dogs with allergies. |

| The chicken has got to be the source of her problem. I got her Oct 05 and had her on Science Diet dog food which I thought was top quality. She was on it up until 2 months ago when I found out that some dogs can be allergic to corn! So I slowly switched her over to Nutro. I don't have the bag w/ me but I know it has oatmeal and is for sensitive stomachs. We eat chicken at least 5x a week and usually will make a little xtra for Sassy Maye. Not anymore! Thanks for your input! Sassy appreciates it! I tried the Natural Balance Lamb flavor a couple days ago and she wasn't going for it. She had just had pups though, so her stomach was upset. She's eating normal again, so I'll try to mix in the natural balance w/ her dog food tonight. I'll let you know how that goes...LOL! |

| You can start with just rice and ground (free range) beef. If after a few days doing ok, then you can add some finely chopped fresh raw broccoli. If after another few days she is ok, then add some cooked lentils for a few day, then split peas for a few days. (I cook the rice, lentils and split peas together) I also add finely chopped raw carrots. You can use organic lamb and lamb liver. I'd stay away from the chicken. A 1/4 boiled egg is good mixed in this for breakfast. For lunch she could have a tablespoon of cottage cheese mixed with plain unflavored yogurt. Don't worry about buying low fat as long as she has puppy's to nurse. I also cook steel cut oats for my girls. It can be for lunch with the cottage cheese mixture, or a tablespoon over breakfast or dinner. Once a day add 1 cod liver oil gel cap. You can also add primrose oil, also in a gel cap, but don't give the entire primrose oil in one day. That one gel cap should be good for at least three days. |

| A friend of mine has a puppy who is allergic to chicken. She is trying different foods to see which one is best for her puppy. There are different types of dog foods that don't contain chicken as their primary meat source so you don't necessarily have to cook meals for them. She tried one with beef as the primary source, and I also gave her some of Max and Abbie's food to try (california natural lamb meal and rice), which has lamb meal as the only meat source.

| I checked the bag of Sassy's dog food last night and it has chicken in it as well She's eating the natural balance lamb food though. She loves it! I think I will slowly switch her over onto that after the pup is weaned. For now I need to find her another puppy food w/o the chicken. frustrating! I just switched her a couple months ago from sci diet to nutro. Now it's back to the drawing board I guess! |

| How about Alpo? (kidding) My puppy scratches. Not all the time but enough to concern me. I have her on Purina Pro (breeder gave me a bag). I am thinking of switching over to Innova or something with no corn in it. Hard to get away from chicken and do not know for sure this is the cause if any.
