Thanks, Bella and her baby are now home and doing well. Bella is a natural at caring for her baby! She grooms her and nurses her and looks after her like a proud Mama. I am just so thankful that Bella was able to have her and that she survived. Thanks again for your concern and encouragment.

I have a Pregnant Yorkie who is a few days before her due date and she is very restless is the the norm?

Welcome to YorkieTalk. Females usually do get restless when they are getting close to their due date. Some times they will start nesting and digging a little a few days before they actually whelp. You should take their temperature, starting about a week before delivery, and in most cases when the temperature fall to 99 degrees or below the bitch will usually whelp in 12 to 24 hours.

Is this your first litter? Could you tell us a little about your female, her size, age etc. Do you have whelping experience? There are many here on YT that have much experience in breeding so feel free to ask for help it you need any. If you go to the Breeder's section and click on New Thread to start a new thread for your questions you will be likely to get much more response. Best wishes and prayers for a safe delivery.

Yes, this is quite normal. Keep in mind though that it is impossible for members here to be able to tell you if your girl's behavior is "normal" without her being observed. It you are in doubt and suspect something is not as it should be, I would suggest asking your mentor to observe her. A trained eye that can judge the situation and give you a better answer far better than what could be 'guessed' online.

Excellent advise. Although we try and do a pretty good job on most things, I must say.....we are not there and someone with experience close to the situation is always best. Mentor or vet. Hope all goes well and keep us posted.

Thanks for the responce........She was 8 pounds before she became pregnant (the father is 4.5 to 5 pounds) and I took her to my vet to have her examined and found out that she is not haveing the usual litter of 4 but a litter of 7 maybe 8 pups. The only thing that has changed in her mood is that she is alot more demanging of my time. Her belly as you can imagine is pretty big so I was guessing it because she cant get comfy with her haveing so many pups in there. I usually have to let her sleep with me at night cause thats the cause thats the only way I can get her to lay for long periods at a time cause other wise she just sits or stands. I called my vet too and she said it is quite normal cause she is really close to her due date.

Thank you so much for your response. You will certainly have your hands full. When is her due date? I know she must be miserable. It is good that you are letting her stay close by to you. Please keep us posted on how she is doing and I pray she has a safe delivery.

Judging from the fact that you are questioning "normal" behavior of your expecting female, I'm assuming this is your first litter. And a big one at that! I'm hoping the advice I am about to give is something you have already covered bases on as it really SHOULD be a given, but...
Please make every effort possible to have your mentor or vet with you during the whelp. IF this is the first litter you have ever had a hand in whelping, it is not something to try to handle on your own, in particular when it is a potentially large litter which *could* present more difficulty. The best scenario is to have an experienced trained eye there to help you.

Again, this is kind of a general rule, and you seem to be doing all you can, so it's probably a moot point, but it never hurts to emphasize to be safe.

This is actually my second litter but my first from her ...... My ex room mate had pugs that gave birth to a litter of 8 last year........ but becasue of the fathers being the same size as her she had to deliver by C section and tied off. Thanks for the advice though and my Vet is always on call but Im praying that nothing goes wrong. This will be her first and last litter .......Thank you so much again.... Are you a yorkie breader?

I am sure that she will be just fine. (You too!) A good vet willing to help you out is an awesome thing to have in your corner. And if you are not nervous enough, there are always plenty of members here to help you worry too.

(And yes, I am a breeder...at least for now. I'm just not very active w/ it at the current time, I guess you could say.

I just want to wish you luck with your litter. While she is whelping, if in doubt, please take her to the vet as soon as possible. Yorkie whelping is different that other dogs because they are so small to start with. With an 8 lb girl and a 4.5-5 lb male, and the fact that she is having a large litter, SHOULD make it easier for her to whelp them naturally, but you really never know how it is going to go until it happens. It is good you have your vet on standby.

My Yorkie just whelped today and she had 7 baby girls her smallest was 3.8 oz. and her biggest was 5.5 oz. the others were either 4.2-4.7 oz. I new she had tied for the first time for sure on Good Friday. I was told by everyone 63- days from then. she had tied 3 times a day for the next 4 days. she gave birth today on day 60. her temp went down 98.3 , 98.5 and 97.5 and then went back up to 98.9 and the next morning had the puppies. She did not eat for over 24 hours and took sips of water from my finger tips. She has never really been an aggressive dog unless you came to close to My daughter Abby in her bed when she is sleeping she is very protective of her. Depsite she belongs to my 6 yr old son she sleeps in Abby's bed. So Far today she has let the whole family feed her rub down the puppies position them against her. She tried to corral them all in a circle at first but now she has spread out and allows the kids to assist the puppies to latch on to her. she even let me use the shaver on her to remove hair from her nipples. Usually she runs and hides when I get them out. She hates to have her nails trimmed, I even bought the peticare tool. I think what it comes down to is how much your dog trust you. Your repore with her, will depend on how she lets you assist her. Believe me with 7 children of my own and 2 grandchidren it is hard to keep a calm relaxed environment anywhere in my house hold. good luck with your dog and her puppies
