| Pigears...dangerous? I was watching E-vets on animal planet yesterday and it was what pets swallow. There were 2 labs that swallowed pig ears, and the vet was saying how these aren't good because of the edges, they can tear up either the esophagus (sp?) or digestive system...one of the two or both, I can't remember. Anyone else ever hear of this? I have like a whole jar full of pigears and pigskins for Rocky..such a waste

| I hadn't heard this but Kitty and Alexis are both sick right now and I was wondering if it had to do with the pig ears they had.

| Mimi is a chewer and she loves pig ears...that is the only thing that keeps her occupied..if not she goes for my walls or anything in sight. I noticed she doesn't swallow anything from the pig ear she just chews it and I have to end up throwing them away because they get so nasty. I tried giving her bully sticks but she didn't care for them. Anytime she has a pig ear she is always supervised. Timmy on the other hand doesn't care for anything..he's picky and he's not a chewer however he loves to play with toys. I've heard they are not good for them but for right now thats the only thing I've found that she really likes. |

You are correct...both can happen,....they can also get lodged in their intestines and close blockages...I'm not sure if you heard what the vet said....he has seen 4 dogs die because of pigs ears...Personally I wouldn't give my girls anything like that...rawhides either...they can get lodged also and because they dont' break up they can get stuck in their throat..My Parents almost lost one of their dogs because of a rawhide chew...they just get kind of mushy. I have been using bully sticks...I do watch the girls though..you never know when these little ones chew if they will break off a peice

| Mine ate the pig ears. There was nothing left of it. Are they not suppose to eat the bully sticks either? The one bully stick Kitty had she ate it all gone. Whats safe that they can chew on and eat too? Mine won't touch the nylabones.

| Oscar and Ruthie LOVE their pig ears and I would never stop giving them to them... there are so many differing opinions, my dogs wouldn't get ANYTHING to eat or chew on EVER if I listened to them ALL. Oscar and Ruthie gnaw on the edge of the pig ears until they are soft and mushy - they CAN'T bite off big chunks of them. And even after an hour long chewing session, they've barely put a dent in it as far as eating the thing. One pig ear will last them a couple months, and even after a couple months, it's not GONE, I end up throwing it out because it's gets gross after awhile.

You are correct.... Same thing with mine....Mimi does not eat them either. She chews on the edges until it get mushy. She also works hard to split the pig ear apart and thats what keeps her busy. I've tried numerous things and she did not care for them. Her favorite is pig ears and I can't see myself not giving it to her anymore. | |

| Have you tried the "piggy twists"??? That is what mine chew and they absolutely love them. Supposed to be pig skin just rolled into a chew stick. They come in two sizes and you can get a big bag at Walmart for about $9.00.

| Kitty can devour a pig ear in about 15mins. I've given the pig skin twists and they last a little longer than the pig ears but not much. It might take her 2hrs to finish one of them off.

You saw the episode too? I think I remember the vet saying that Rocky has had them before, and he does EAT them..so he won't be having anymore. I'm going to get him some bullysticks, but I never see them anywhere and really don't wanna order them online. I don't buy him rawhides either, but when he goes to my parents house he takes Gizmo's. I just supervise him very closely with them, and as soon as it gets a little soft, I take it away. Also, sometimes our friends will buy him a pack of them, so it's the same with that, he can have it but once it gets soft it's gone..and he's supervised. Never would i give him one and leave him alone with it. I wonder if the pigskins are dangerous too then I don't know what to do w/ all these extra pigears and pigskins now.
