| Emma acting funny since heat...possibly pregnant??? I've lurked on this site for a while, but never actually posted. I'm posting today b/c I'm very worried about my Yorkie baby! Emma is a year and a half old and just came out of her 2nd heat. We think the heat started right around the new year, but we were in the process of a move, so Emma stayed with my parents for 2 weeks until we picked her up last week. My mom said that she only acted like she was "in heat" for 2-3 days and then was normal again, which is weird b/c when she went in the first time it lasted about a week and she was acting funny (as in trying to attract boy dog's attention and not wanting to come in from outside) for about a week prior and a week after her actual bleeding period (sorry if TMI). Anyway, since we picked her up, she's been more aggressive than usual (growling and somewhat snappy with my husband) and barking at every little sound she hears. I thought that maybe she was just reacting to the move, plus I'm about 5 months pregnant, and I've been told that sometimes small dogs will be very protective of their pregnant "mommies", but now today she has slept pretty much all day, whereas usually she is up and running around wanting to play constantly. Emma is usually a very sweet-tempered girl and I'm worried that she may be sick, or worse pregnant since I wasn't there to make sure she was watched at all times when outside. I've never been around a pregnant Yorkie, so I was wondering if someone could tell me some of the signs to look for. I've made an appt with the vet in our new town for the beginning of Feb., but if she may be pregnant I want to get her in sooner to make sure they can get rid of the babies. (Emma is very tiny, only around 5 lbs, so if we do breed her, it will have to be with a very small male.) If anyone can provide any insight it will be greatly appreciated!! Thank you!! |

| Some signs of pregnancy are, swelling of nipples and tummy, change of attitude (usually become tired and clingy), vulva still swollen, change in appetite and she may even get more sickness for a little bit. However, even if she does have all these symptoms, she could be going through a false pregnancy instead. They don't have to be with a male to get a false pregnancy and they go through the same symptoms as if they were pregnant, some will even produce milk. You can have a simple blood test done to determine whether she is pregnant or not but it has to be after so many days, I was thinking 30 days but I can't remember for sure, it might be that long. Hope this helps and good luck with your baby!!!

| Thanks so much for the help! I'll be taking Emma to the vet around the beginning of Feb so I'll have them do a blood test then. Thanks again! Julia |
