| My puppy gets too stinky! Jewels is 16 wks. old and is the stinkingest dog I've ever known! (She's my first Yorkie, so not sure exactly what to expect.) I've been bathing her 2-3 times a week, but after a bath she's stinky a day or two later. She licks her bottom sometimes, and I suspect that's where her stink comes from. This odor gets on my clothes when I hold her, and I don't care for doggie kisses at this point, knowing where her mouth's been. I read one of the threads here about bathing Yorkies only once a month and I can't even imagine how our home would smell if we did that. One thing I learned from that thread is to use cleansing wipes on the bottom area in between baths, so maybe that's what I'll try next. Any other reason my puppy is a stinker? Maybe her anal glands need expressing? (I read a thread about that, too. I think I'll have the vet show me how to do that -- they did not do that at Jewels' previous visit.) The puppy shampoo I've been using (it's purple in color and made by Hartz) smells like cheap men's cologne and I can't wait til its gone so I can find something that smells good, maybe with a coconut fragrance. Signed, Stinkerbell's Mom |

| Have you looked to see if her anal glands are full? If they are, she may be scooting her bum too. I wouldn't use that shampoo. Just toss it out and find a better one for her. Dogs sometimes have a not so pleasant body oder due to what they eat too. My Azrael has to get a bath every 3 to 4 days because she has a body odor. Zada never smells bad and they both eat the same things, so I'm just thinking that some dogs are just natural born *stinkers*. |

| As for the stinky puppy, I have no idea why he's so stinky!! DOes he have poop stuck on the fur by his butt?? Can you smell him all over and find out exactly where the smell is coming from? As for products - the shampoo and conditioner I use lasts FOREVER!! I take him for walks from time to time in the winter due to the cold I can't everyday but he'll get the outside smell for a while when he comes in but will return to the same freshness of his shampoo after a while. I use BIO GROOM Fluffy Puppy shampoo and GRoom N Fresh Condtioner also by biogroom. I also use a dime size amount of cowboy magic on semi damp hair. He always smells super good!!

| Thanks, and she did scoot around a little in the beginning (yes, she had worms but has been treated three times now) but I haven't seen her scooting lately. She's a jewel of a sweetheart of a pup but I kind of look forward to the day in probably the far off future when she's houseBROKEN! |

| When Gracie was that age, she would stink up a day or two after a bath, even with using what I thought was a good pet shampoo. I figured out that part of the odor came from her laying on her pee pads. The Cowboy Magic detangler not only gets the mats out of Gracie's hair, but it also repels dirt. Since I started using that stuff, Gracie stayed smelling and looking good for lots longer.

| Oh, thanks to all of you for your replies. Is there something inherently bad about Hartz puppy shampoo besides its yucky fragrance? |

At such a young age I doubt anal glands would be a problem but perhaps should be checked. There are better quality shampoos Biogroom, A1 all systems, 8 in 1, Four Paws are some brands you might want to try. I don't recommend the wipes. there are chemicals on those things that could be causing more trouble and irritation than what it is fixing or masking.

| My husband figured out that our Yorkie puppy gets that stinky dog smell after exercising. We can usually tell when she smells poopy or like pee, and those are obvious and not at all the same as the dirty dog smell. The dirty dog smell definitely happens after exercise and goes away after she's cooled down. |

| We use the 8 in 1 PawLuxury shampoo, Melon scent...it is a intensive deorderizing shampoo, and it works very well in my opinion. I only bath Daisy about 1 time a week, it leaves her smelling great, but we also use a blow drier so that wet dog smell is gone quickly and realy she doesn't even truly need it once a week..but I keep the routine. I picked this shampoo up at Walmart.

| I would bring this up at your next vet visit. Depending on the odor, some can have a physical source. What sort of smell is it? Is it a poopy smell? Or a "dog" smell? Do you watch her all the time when she is out to make sure she has not found something to roll in? Our dachshund once rolled on a dead bird and stunk to high heaven. Feeding a premium dog food? Try brushing her teeth too -- sometimes gunk gets stuck and rots in there. I think Yorkies smell less than most dogs. They only have a single coat, so no second coat to trap odors next to the skin. If there is a lot of odor on a consistent basis -- it needs to be checked out medically.

The smell is not wet dog or outdoor dog smell. I think it's a body odor and suspect it's related to her bottom-licking tendencies. If those glands need expelling, maybe that's the key. When I bathe this puppy I think I can feel the glands but it seems like it would hurt her if I would try to express them. I'll get a new shampoo next time I'm at the store.

| Hi, I have just joined the forum and have the same problem you do. My little girl (actually my daughters but guess who takes care of her!) did have her anal glands full and I have had them expressed twice. Chloe is just 4 months. We have had her about a month. Even after having the glands cleaned she still smells awful. I gave her a bath today and after about 3 hours she was smelling again. I am wondering if she sort of sweats cuz she likes to lay in front of the fireplace on her blanket. I am using an oatmeal shampoo on the recommendation of the vet (suppose to prevent dry skin). I am wondering if I should change to a deodorant type. If your pup's glands are full she will scoot her bottom on the floor. I know Chloe's smell isn't this since I just had hers cleaned 2 weeks ago. I to would like to find out how to solve this problem....my son when he comes to visit says he can smell that "doggy smell" when he walks in the door.... If you find a solution let me know....thanks |

| Hi Chloe's Nana -- Our puppy will be 6 mos. old this month and she doesn't seem to have the stinky problem anymore (other than outside or wet dog smell sometimes, which isn't the smell we were concerned about originally). Someone here at YT mentioned something to the effect that their pup had outgrown their stinky problem, and I'm guessing we've reached that point, too, with Jewels. Hope Chloe does the same. And ta-da, my big triumph in the last week was that I was finally able to clip Jewels' nails. Between them being totally black (can't see the quick), my eyesight, and my expecting her not to sit still, I was tentative about clipping. But she sat there like a princess getting a manicure. I think she wanted more of that! (And now I have experience actually doing it.) |
