| How much protein is too much? wellness? I was at the vet today and asked about Wellness puppy food. My vet had never heard of it and when I told her that the protein was 28% she was concerned that is may be too much for her. Any input? I am a new yorkie mommy and I just want to do what is best. Also chicken soup also has 28% and I know alot of people feed their yorkies this. or to wellness? |

| My vet thinks the same. I think the recommended should be no more than 21% for our little ones.

| The larger breeds should have higher protein but definitely not our little ones.

| is your yorkie a PUPPY or an ADULT? puppy food formulas will be higher in protein to help with the growth and energy of a growing puppy. 28% protein is pretty average for puppy food. adult food formulas will usually be lower protein, usually in the 18-24% range. some adult formulas are higher in protein because they are designed for performance and very active dogs such as those that compete in agility contests or working dogs. innova evo is an example. it's 42% protein. i think it's okay to feed your dog a high protein diet even as an adult, but it should be complimented by higher activity. high protein diet + low/moderate activity = fat doggie. btw, my two boys don't really like wellness. it's a good food, but the kibbles are just too big for their little mouths so they don't bother. |

| For puppies, that is a good amount of protein (28%). They need it to grow properly. I found a food that has nice, small, flat kibbles. It's the Castor & Pollux brand, I believe it's PetCo's brand. It is high quality, though No by products, no wheat, corn, soy, and preserved with mixed tocopherols (vitamin E) I'm sure you'll find something suitable, it just may take a few tries.

like i said earlier, puppy food will be higher in protein than adult food because puppies need more calories and more protein to grow. you don't have to worry about protein % while your puppy is still growing. but keeping your adult dog at a high protein diet may result in obesity if the dog has only low to average activity throughout the day. - Natural Balance - Flint River Ranch - Canidae Pet Foods - California Natural - Karma Organic - Solid Gold - Newman's Own Organic Yeah, so I went a little crazy on food and did a bunch of research and tried a bunch of different foods on my two boys. Right now, I'm feeding them Natural Balance Potato and Duck formula. They love it and it's very good for them. | ||

| I'm mistaken on California Natural and Solid Gold. Evidently they have puppy formulas now. It's been a while since i've looked at puppy kibbles. But basically, protein content will differ depending on the formula of the dog food. Puppy formula tend to be higher in protein (high 20%'s). Working/High Activity dog formula tend to be high in protein (low 40%'s). Adult/All Life Stages dog formula tend to be high 10's to low 20's in protein. Diet/Senior formula tend to be lower in protein like mid to high 10's. But it really depends on the formulas. - Natural Balance 18-24% All Life Stage - Flint River Ranch 21-23.5% All Life Stages - Canidae Pet Foods 18.5-26% All Life Stage - California Natural 18-21% (Adult) 26% (Puppy) - Karma Organic 20% - Solid Gold 18-42% (Adult) 26-28% (Puppy) - Newman's Own Organic 21% (Adult) All of the above have formulas that has 21% protein (except karma organic) if you want to be exactly at 21%. All of the above have options that contain no soy and no corn. All of them do not have by products and bad preservatives. Even Science Diet's adult formulas have approx 21-21.5% protein. But I've never fed my boys Science Diet because it has corn and by products in the top 5 ingredients. |

| This is what Mimi eats. the royal cannine. I give her a teaspoon of white chicken meat that I cook every night. Do you think it is too much protein? She is 4 1/2 pounds. Maybe some one has suggestions or comments. Thanks |

| I don't know if Wellness is good for her or not. I don't want to fry her liver or kidneys. The ingredients in Wellness is good though. I guess I'll just wait and see how she does on it. |
