| Spaying decision - here or out of town?! Okay I have a little dilemna, I have a few months to go yet. Kimber weighs 2.5 lbs at 16 weeks. I was told to get her spayed around 6 months. The breeder would NOT recommend a vet in my town (I got Kimber from just outside of Winnipeg, MB which is about 7 hours away). She strongly urged me to take her to this vet - out of town for her spay. Obviously I am not going to make a 14 hour trip (round trip) every time she needed shots when I got her. The vet in town is great with Kimber, and it is a wonderful facility. I don't know if I should get my vet in town to do the procedure - or make the trip to Manitoba for it. My feelings are mixed. If I got it done in town and something went wrong - I would NEVER forgive myself. On the other hand - even though the breeder strongly recommended taking her out of town, and said they would keep her for the weekend and everything - I simply don't like the idea of making a long drive (especially from NW Ontario with our horrible highways in the winter) and then another drive back. She does well in the car but it may make it more stressful? Please I would really appreciate everyones opinions on this!

| What are her reasons behind recommending you not have your vet in town do the procedure?? Just seems kind of fishy to me - is she recommending her own vet? Maybe I'm not trusting or something, but it seems odd to me.

I just think the stress from a trip like that would not be a good thing for her at all.

| That's just weird. The person in your town is just geting that from the breeder then and probably doesn't know any better. Maybe the breeder has something worked out with their vet. I guess I'm really untrusting when something sounds odd like that. If your vet is qualified and experienced, I would go with her. I would think that long of a trip would be somewhat stressful on your pup - but then again, I'm no expert.

| I would personally interview the vets (and test their knowlege on this small breed). I did plenty of research online about spaying/neutering yorkies and I brought it up to my vet and 2 others. I am going with my first choice as she specializes in small breeds and was quite knowlegeable about the procedure. She even offered for me to be there with him ;-) I know, I am a paranoid freak........but my furballs are my kids and I want to ensure I did my research right. Go with your choice.

| When I first looked for vets for her I called around and made sure I got one with experience. It might be nice for me to take a shopping trip the weekend of her spay if I went out of town - but I think I will be so worried about her the entire time around her spay I won't be able to do anything! haha Anyway - What concerns me is that what if something goes wrong with the out of town vet and then I have to bring her to emerg. in my town? My vet will be SO upset if I don't go to her for the spay. Don't you think? Basically the breeder made me feel as if I were a bad owner for thinking about bringing her elsewhere...

| You should trust your vet in town as she will be the one your girl will be going to for the rest of her life. I am sure everything will be okay, you can have her do the blood work first if you have any questions. It is time to put your trust in your vet and keep your girl close to home. |

| I would bring her where I'D feel best. I know you respect the breeder, but who'd decision is it after all? If something indeed were to go wrong at her vet's will she cover the bills? If she really wanted the pups to be spayed/neutered where she chose she should have put it in the contract somewhere before purchasing and/or have them fixed herself before placing them. This is my best advice..........really, it's YOUR decision/business. There isn't much anyone can tell you here either. Having said that, best wishes to you both!

Interview ALL of the vets in the town you live in. That's what I did, I got on the tele and started calling -- if the office people were friendly and helpful then I set up an appointment to talk to the vet. If the person who answered the phone seemed to busy to help me or acted like they could just care less, then I moved on. I went through three vet practices before I found Dr. Amy. It was $$ well spent 'cause I have found a highly qualified vet who OWNS a yorkie and loves my motly crew to peices. There are six vets in the practice and they all incredibly skilled and caring. Just to tell you how wonderful this group of caring people are.... last summer when I had Chizzie's pups at the vet for shots, I locked my keys in the car. I couldn't reach anyone to come and "rescue" me, so Dianne --one of the teriffic office crew-- took her lunch hour and drove me home so I could get the spare set of keys. WOW! How can you beat that level of caring. Especially with a teeny-tiny little tidbit, I would want to find a vet close to home that I had 100% confidence in. GOOD LUCK! | |

There are only 3 where I go but they have the BEST customer/doggy care. They have an immaculate boarding room, grooming area etc. I haven't been there to groom yet as I keep the poodle's coat long for the winter and Bobbi is still a baby and I trim him myself......lol

| A 14 hour trip????? Is the breeder crazy? Maybe she gets a kickback, or a discount on her dogs if she gets more to go see her vet, lol. Multi dog discount. I'd take her to the vet that you are going to now. Just make sure they use Isoflorane. I think thats the name of the anesthesia, most vets use for yorkies. And NO barbituates! (most don't use them anymore anyway). She'll do fine. I just had Venus spayed Dec 11th. I'm thinking she weighed 3 lbs. But as small as she is, I really didn't think she weighed that much. I know we worry way too much when they get spayed to begin with. And with a trip like that, my lord, that would stress you out even more! I'd stick with the vet that you will be using from now on. The one you trust! IMHO, if she wanted her vet used for spay/neuter, she should have had that done before she sold you the dog. Its no longer her dog, or her choice. |
