| Eclampsia We had a bad night Christmas Eve...My ten year old found Gucci under the bed Panting and Shaking...It looked almost like she was having seizures. We called our vet and he told us to give her tums because it sounded like her ca;sium was depleted. We drove to town and found the only store open and bought her some tums....She kept getting worse...so we called the Emergency Hospital in the next town....They said if she was having muscle spasms that she needed to be brought in and put on IV fluids and some other stuff to bring her Calsium back up... So we took her there, (it was a hour and a half drive) and when we were pulling into the parking lot she vomitted and she didn't have enough strength to push it out of her throat so she stopped breathing....We kept patting her on the back until we got her to push it out and she started breathing again. They kept her over night....We picked her up the next morning and she has been acting really weak ever since...I've been giving her a Calsium Supplement every day and we aren't letting her nurse anymore...(the puppys are 6 weeks old) I've been feeding her all she wants....up until today she was eating good but she hasn't ate hardly anyrthing today....all she wants to do is sleep. Is this normal or should I be concerned? Any info would be helpful. Thanks

Donating YT 14K Club Member | I'm so sorry that happened to your girl. I CANNOT believe your vet said to just give her some Tums. Once the dog has eclampsia, they MUST get an IV (or a shot) directly into the vein. Your girl almost died at the stupidity of your vet. Please find another vet. As far as your girl, give her special meals and I'd also give her some vitamins to help build back up her strength.

| i have been concerned about eclampsia, too. My bitch had five babies and they are almost six weeks old. I thought I was past where I had to worry about eclampsia. Guess not. I hope your girl gets well soon. That had to be scary for you. |

No Longer a Member | This happened many years ago with my weiner dog. When I got Precious to the vet she was almost gone,, they called it "Milk Fever" tho, but sounds the same as yours. The vet had said nothing could be done for her, after seeing me become hysterical and slide down the wall in a puddle she said she could try one more thing. After being on the drip and meds for a day we had her another 12 years...14 in all. So don't lose hope, and please don't let the puppies nurse..keep in touch with your vet. Prayers for you and your girl. |

| The vet told me that no matter what you do if your pet has eclampsia once they will have the same problem with the rest of their litters. And I'm sorry it took me so long to give an update but Gucci is doing fine...She's back to her loving self> Thank the Lord!
