Was it a bug? A bee? We have never had a problem with anything biting our dogs. No I take that back.....one time our dachshund (now 14 yrs. old) did get stung or bit by something -- her little muzzle swelled up. We were never sure if it was a wasp or snake or what. We live in the country and have had every critter imaginable in our yard. But that is the only bite that I know of in all the 15 years we have lived here.

I come down to Florida to visit my Grandma and when I do I take precautions. Normally the bugs aren't any worse here than anywhere else, except for mosquitos in the summer but I imagine any place by the water would be the same. The worse thing to worry about here is sand spurs! Those rechod things will get in their paws so you need to make sure you watch where you are walking them and make sure its short cut grass or keep them on pavement or clean sand. For bugs, I have Jaden on Frontline which keeps off fleas and ticks and I also spray him with an organic bug spray buy Aubree Organics. If you google it you should find it. I think its called "Doganics" or something like that and it smells so good like baby powder and keeps all of the flying insects away from him. Of course he also wears clothes, shirts or sweaters and sometimes pants and those add a little protection to for his back.

My mom has a place in Bradenton and you have to watch out for fire ants in the retirement area she's in.

Most likely it was a fire ant, as mentioned. Jo got bit by one when we lived there and his little face swelled up to about 3 times it's normal size within a minute or so. We had to rush him to the vet for some shots but he was fine. After that we built them a 10 by 25 foot fenced concrete patio so they didn't have to go out in the grass anymore! Now that we're in Illinois...they love to play in the grass and...no fire ants!

Ah, the dreaded fire ants. The flea and tick meds must help them on this. We have a constant battle with fire ants and have often marveled that the dogs have never gotten bit. We, on the other hand, have often. Camphophenique is the best stuff -- just swab some on with a Q-Tip and it will take the sting away in no time. We treat our yard and still have to treat the individual hills that spring up. I think we just move them around and never get rid of them.

Default Campho-penique

Campho-phenique is good for lots of things. My last post almost made is sound like I treat the yard with it -- not so. Just use it after-the-fact on our skin. Product info says: " For the temporary relief of pain and itching associated with minor burns, sunburn, minor cuts, scrapes, insect bites or minor skin irritation. Protects against the risk of infection in minor cuts, scrapes and burns." You will find most any pharmacy, grocery store, and even discount places like Walmart and Kamrt will carry it. Campho-phenique comes in a little green bottle inside a box that looks like this:

You are right to worry a bit about the bugs in Florida. When I lived in NC, I let my dog out in the yard unsupervised. But here in Florida I would never do that. At least not in the summertime. My DH was walking Rocco last summer and some kind of bug landed on him and bit him (so quick DH couldn't even shoo him away). We ended up having to take Rocco to the vet to get him on antibiotics. He had some kind of allergic reaction and the bug bite left a big hole in him. It was gross. The bugs here are gross!!

Hey Everyone. I too live here in Florida 22 years now. I found the best thing for the fireant bites is alcohol, Just wipe or pour it on the bite. Takes the sting out and itch and it will not become red with a white head on it. I also found that the revolution for dogs down here in Florida is PERFECT !! It is a heart wormer and flea/tick prevention in one. i have never had a problem with fleas/ticks or any other bug/parasite with my puppies..... My puppies have never been bitten by fireants, But my neighbors has and she put Skin So Soft on her dog, redness went away.... just I thought !
