| Very very fussy eater PLEASE HELP Hi, I have an extremely fussy eater. She prefers human food to dog food but when I make stuff for her she will only eat the meat and leave all veg etc in the bowl. I have over the past few weeks been to trying to feed her on different dog food brands to see what she will eat. Here is what I've tried: Pro-plan for toy breeds - ate once and will now not touch it. Prima for yokies dry food - ate once and now will not touch it Ceasar (all pate varieties) - ate for 3 weeks now doesn't want it Pedigree pate variety - ate for one week now doesn't want it Lydog soft pieces for small breeds - ate for 3 days now doesn't like it She hates gravy and any jelly stuff. Please any ideas? She weighs about 5 pounds and is so skinny. I am worried she's not eating enough. She is also having an operation tomorrow morning. She has a lump on her head. It is a build up of grease where the hair follicles are not working properly. The lump has been released once but has come back and keeps growing. I am worried if she isn't eating now, there is no way she will eat for a few days after when she will be even more fussy. Suggestions will be greatly appreciated. |

| Try mixing the food with cottage cheese or scrambled egg

| Thanks Chachi, I'll have a look tomorrow in the supermarket for cottage cheese, not sure if the sell it in France. If not i'll definitely give the egg a go. I tried just normal grated cheese today and she ate the cheese and left bits of food all over the floor. |

| Some people mix boiled egg with their food. You could do that too. Yours sounds like a super picky one

| If worse comes to worse you can make her chicken and rice and she will eat that. Its hard to get them back to a dog food diet after they have ate that though. Alot of people fix that for their dogs when they are sick and some people fix it for their dogs with vegetables every night

| That is the thing with Sadie, I think she knows that if she doesn't eat anything for a few days then she gets lovely human food because we feel so sorry for her. This may be what she is trying now. However after her op tomorrow I think it will be chicken and rice for her, although again she normally eats the chicken and leaves rice all over the floor. Just to keep her strength up. Then once she has recovered I will give the egg or cottage cheese mixed with dog food a try. I just don't know how long I can leave her if she doesn't eat it. I would rather not have to cook everyday for her as she is going on vacation with us to England at xmas and if she eats dog food it will be a lot easier. If all else fails though, I may very well be investing in some doggie cook books :-) |

| Try Merrick canned food. It's REALLY good and great for them - a very high quality food. www.merrickpetcare.com Also try topping the kibble with plain fat-free yogurt, scrabled eggs, or fat free cream cheese.

| I had two very picky eaters (they've gotten past that stage though now and hopefully yours will too!) Cottage cheese mashed in with boiled chicked worked really well for me - both of them loved it. This way I knew they were eating and getting some good nutrients. They also love bananas... I give them a slice or two each of that. I tried baby food at one time too - you might want to give that a try. They have fruit flavors as well as chicken or lamb, etc. I mixed these in with kibble and they loved it. Good luck!

| Thanks for all the tips, i'll have a go at trying them and see which works. I forgot to mention she is 9ys and I adopted her a yr and a half ago. This has been a problem the whole time I have had her. Its just starting to get frustrating. She loved human food but when she eats it regularily she gets a bad tummy so want her on dog food. I live in France and some brands are impossible to get here. |

| Don't know what brands are available in France, but look for one with no corn, no meat by-products, no wheat, no soy and Vitamin E as the preservative. Although not as healthy for her teeth, a premium canned food (pedigree and li'l cesars are not good foods) is better than feeding chicken, rice, egg, etc. You cannot meet a dog's nutritional needs that simply. I promise she will eat when she gets hungry. If she wins the standoff at least put her on a multivitamin and blend the foods like chicken, rice, cottage cheese, egg, etc. together very well so she can't pick out just the chicken. My mom always complains how picky hers are and several times a year I watch them while she is on vacation and they are sent home eating a dry quality food (I am sure it helps that they follow the lead of my dogs). She is so happy, but within two weeks they are back to being picky and won't eat - dogs are smart they will get away with what they can, but they are like children. If your child only would eat ice cream is that what you would feed, of course not. Stand your ground and do what is best for your dog. |

| Started thinking about my earlier post, please don't take it as if I'm blaming you, I have a habit of being too direct, it's not an American thing, just a me thing. Anyway, more helpful advice is to put a quality dry food (preferably a senior formula) in a food processor or blender, turn it into a powder and add a low sodium chicken broth to make a mush and warm slightly in the microwave. This way she will think she is getting something special and will get use to the taste and you can slowly lessen the chicken broth and finally she will be on a dry food which will be better for her teeth. |

Thanks for the advice, i will give that a go. I know we are probably partly to blame as we do give in to her in the end. How can you not when she makes faces like this (photo attached). She came to us like this when we adopted her so we have no idea what she is used to. It is not uncommon here in France to feed dogs human food. But i'm from England and believe that they should be eating dog food as it is what is best. I will definitely try blitzing some dry food and mixing with chicken broth. She does get very excited when she thinks she is getting something special | |

| Just picked my darling Sadie up from the vet. Op went well and she is doing very well. Already running round like a mad dog :-) She has eaten a piece of beef stick which she would happily live off if she had the chance. The vet said to feed her something she will definitely eat tonight to keep her strength up. She has antibiotics for 6 days and has to go back to have the stitches removed in 12 days. |
