| feeding Hello, I am new to this site. How many times a day should a Yorkie be fed? I tried feeding them once in the morning and once in the evening around 6:00 p.m. The problem the male goes by his dog dish around lunch time and screams bloody murder for food. I give him a little food to pacify him. Then, at the evening meal he doesn't eat and then at l0:00 p.m., hes whining again for the rest of his food. Each dog gets approximately 1 cup per day (they don't always eat the entire amount). The only problem with this is they want to get up in the middle of the night to eliminate. I'm at my whits end. You would think I was starving him to hear him carry on at night. Should I let him whine till the morning? The male is 2 years old weighs 11 lbs. The female is 2 1/2 and weighs 7 lbs. Do male dogs whine more? Thanks for any advise |

| For their age two feedings a day is all they need. Maybe you should give them more food at each feeding. My male always eats more than my female. I dont know what to tell you about the whining neither of mine are whiners

| What are you feeding them? Some of the dog foods are filled with more grain and things that do not stay with them as long. Maybe switching dog foods would help? Maybe you could slowly reduce the amount he gets in that lunch time feeding until he is more used to teh twice a day schedule. I leave dry dog food out all the time for mine so they can nibble here and there, as they want.

| I agree that changing foods would help, depending on what you are feeding. Loki is also 2 and 11 pounds and he eats just over 1/2 cup per day divided in two. He also usually gets a little bit of chicken or potato or whatever we are eating for dinner, but only a little. He *always* eats his breakfast when I give it to him, around 7am. Then he is happy to get his dinner any time between 4 and 7. If they are not eating it at the time you put it down you should give them 15 minutes and pick it back up. Don't let them graze all night. That does lead the bathroom problems you are having. A nice walk after dinner also helps with those problems!

| feeding Within the last month I have switched to the Wellness brand dog food. It has no meat by products or fillers. They used to eat Purina Pro which I stopped feeding them. I guess I will cut back on the amount I give him at lunch so he will eat his last meal around five or six at night. I don't give them any treats as they get upset tummy's and diarreah from anything other than their dog food. I would let them eat later, but they want to go out at 2 in the morning to poop and bark at anything they see! |
