| I think my food routine is getting boring.. So, I leave out dry food for Emma all day (Royal Canine for Yorkies) and at night feed her some wet food (canned Pedigree, usually the lamb and rice for puppies). With that said -- I've got a couple of questions: 1. Is Pedigree a good brand? I don't know what's really good for their diet quite yet, and I want to give her something that'll give her all the nutrition. She likes wet food the best. 2. She doesn't really eat her dry food. Is there anything I can add to make it more appealing, and still leave it out during the day? I don't want to overfeed her, though I'd like her to fatten up. and lastly - How do you get a yorkie to "fatten up"? Emma looks a little thin. Also -- I've got some snack questions as well.. What do you guys give your dogs as snacks? I don't know what's healthy and what's just bad for them, and I'm afraid to give them human food because I'm afraid she'll like it and then not eat her puppy food. AND...those Dentabones...are they able to chew/eat those? I've been afraid to give her those as well because the packages say they are not made for toy breeds. HELP please. I feel like I'm such a paranoid mom |

I think Pedigree brand dogs aren't as good for them . . . check the ingredients. I feed mine Innova which is all natural. There are so many great brand foods though but Pedigree does not fall under it Not bad though, just not the best kind for our dogs My doggies snack on different kinds of treats. Pup-peroni (they got one at a gift exchange and loved it so much), dried muscle/tendon (does not stink and all natural), those beef/chicken/lamb you buy that looks like a log (good to freeze) so it goes a long way. I never gave them dentabones. | |

| 1. Is Pedigree a good brand? I would look into other brands of canned food before I would feed Pedigree. Try Blue Buffalo. It is holistic, all natural, premium ingredients, and the best part is that you can get it at PetSmart! Also, ProPlan has started making a new dog food called ProPlan Select. Try looking at the ingredients on their canned food. You definately need something that is all natural with no byproducts. 2. She doesn't really eat her dry food. Is there anything I can add to make it more appealing, and still leave it out during the day? I would start MIXING her dry food with the wet...don't just put the wet on top. Either do that or mix her dry food with some cottage cheese or plain yogurt. Also, to entice my skinny yorkies to eat, I sprinkle just a little bit of grated parmesean cheese (you know, the kind that comes in the green can that you shake on spagetti) on their food. The bits of cheese are so tiny that they can't just pick the cheese out and it really sticks to their hard food and gets them to eat it better. and lastly - How do you get a yorkie to "fatten up"? Emma looks a little thin. Again, the parmesean cheese, cottage cheese, or plain yogurt mixed with her hard food are all good ideas to entice her to eat more of her hard food. What do you guys give your dogs as snacks? I try to stay relatively healthy with treats and snacks. My dogs love carrots, green beans, broccoli, fruit (NO GRAPES!) boiled chicken, white rice. Whatever you give her, try mixing it with her hard food to entice her to eat her hard food. If she is not eating her own hard dog food, I would not give her snacks or treats. She really needs to be eating her own food and not filling up on treats or snacks. You could try changing dog food brands, too. Maybe she is just tired of Royal Canine or she simply doesn't like it. If you are looking for a brand you can get at PetSmart, try Blue Buffalo or the new ProPlan Select, which are both all natural. AND...those Dentabones...are they able to chew/eat those? Read packages and don't get anything for her to chew on that doesn't say 100% digestible on the package. Good chewing items are Merricks Bully Sticks or Merricks Flossies and Nylabones Healthy Edibles. |

| Merrick canned food is the only canned food I will feed. It looks like a chicken pot pie and looks and smells BETTER than most human canned food. It's amazing! Pedigree is not a good food. I think that by feeding the canned food you are giving her too much choice so she won't eat the kibble. Also, by leaving it out she is not encouraged to eat it. Here is what I did to turn Loki from a PICKY eater into a very good eater: Start with a good quality kibble (Canidae, Wellness, Merrick, Innova, Innova Evo, California Natural, etc. there are TONS out there but you won't find them at the grocery store or even PetSmart.) Feed twice or three times a day - your dog will let you know if they need the middle meal. Put it down for 30 mins, show your dog the food, and if they don't eat - pick it back up. Try again later. Your dog will only skip one or two meals before they eat when you feed them. Keep in mind some dogs are social eaters - Loki will only eat if I'm in the kitchen. Either stick around the kitchen or just feed your dog in whatever room you are in. If I'm busy in another room I'll just bring Loki's bowl in there - I try not to make a big deal about it. Also - some dogs don't like certain bowls. Loki hated stainless bowls and loved eating off of a plate or the floor. Again - choose your battles. We just fed him off of a salad place until I found these HUGE ceramic flat bowls he loves. Supplement ONLY after they eat their kibble. If you don't do this you risk diarrhea and picky eaters. They need the kibble to be consistent and they need to learn they do not get "goodies" if they don't eat their kibble. Even if you don't have diarrhea, feeding canned food will make your dog more gassy. Better to feed kibble at every meal. I give Loki a full meal in the morning and then 1/2 his meal in the evening and then give him something extra like eggs, yogurt, green beans, canned food, chicken, rice, etc. Usually I just make him something extra from our dinner. Just make sure whatever you feed is PLAIN. Like I add salt and butter to our green beans so I make separate ones for Loki. Another tip is to use the kibble as treats and also to put it in fun puzzle toys. Loki will ignore his kibble but if I put it in his "purple thing" he will spend 30 mins trying to get it out. If your pup likes kongs and puzzle toys, use them to your advantage!!

Pedigree is not that great....has by products in it...I only feed the furbabies dog food made with human grade products. AND...those Dentabones...are they able to chew/eat those? I've been afraid to give her those as well because the packages say they are not made for toy breeds. A member just posted on here that her yorkie almost chocked to death on one of these..I read alot of members use bully sticks...I haven't seen them in any of the stores I go into...I just give them nylabones to chew on...you could try a kong.
