| Hi Apricotkid. Yes, there are others...we lost our 12 year old male to complications of this disease last September 16th. We got Little Man Tate (AKA Booger) when he was 4 months old and we loved him like he was our child. We went through the testing, belly taps, ultrasounds, x-rays, endoscopes, lasix, prednisone, diet changes, therapies, plasma transfusions, blood tests and more blood tests. We checked protein levels, albumen levels, kidneys, liver enzimes and everything in between, he had several had IV's and hospital stays. When he was doing well he was fine for quite some time but then we would notice the fluid starting to build again and off we went to the vet. It was hard but we did what we could for Boog as long as he let us know he still wanted to be with us but when he let us know otherwise we had to make the hardest decision we've ever had to make and we had him put to rest. We got a VISA card to pay for his bills and it's still called the Boogie card. I started having selfish or bad feelings towards other people when I would see them with their dog...why did mine have to leave and theirs was still with them? We grieved for the longest time and I thought I'd never be able to love another dog again but that changed and I knew I had to have another Yorkie, nothing does it for me like that fluffy little face and bundle of never ending love! I know now my Boog dog is still with me everyday, he lives in my heart and he always will. Your Mom will heal just give her some time...she'll let you know when it's right. I will always have a Yorkie in my home. Last edited by Jo-Jo; 05-03-2005 at 05:08 PM. |

| Thank you JoJo Dear Jojo, Thanks so much for answering me and sharing your story. I don't mean to be nosy but I am curious how old Boogie was when he was diagnosed? Was he a small yorkie and was he very thin even when he was well? From what I understand this disease is more common in terriers but I haven't come across many people who are familiar with it. I appreciate your help and I am very sorry for your loss. Mary |

| Hi Mary...thank you and I don't mind you asking at all. Boog had trouble from the day we got him and one thing led to another. He went to rest when he was 12 and I think he was diagnosed within the last 3 or 4 years so he was either 8 or 9 when diagnosed. He was always a stocky little Yorkie...he was only about 9" tall and weighed about 5 or 6 pounds so he was never thin...just healthy looking. When he would gain fluid he would go up to 7 and 8 pounds and have trouble breathing. The strange thing about Boog was that no matter what he had going on health wise he always had the most beautiful shiny coat and I've always heard a dog's health will show in the coat. But...Boog never did follow the rules! I had never heard of this disease before our vet mentioned it to us but now that they're familiar with it first hand she told me a couple weeks ago that she has another Yorkie she's treating for the same thing. I don't know the people but when she told me about their baby I got teary eyed and my heart just broke for them. I'm sorry to hear of your loss also but it will get better with a little time. I can actually laugh now when I remember something silly that Boog would do...like the night he got caught in the live trap trying to sneak the bait for a midnight snack...but I still get teary eyed over him too. | Dear Teri, Thanks again for sharing The details of what happened to your little Boogie. Artie has lymphangiectasia and irritable bowel disease so he couldn't metabolize his food very well. When he was well he was very thin and wound up emaciated. We never had the problems of fluid accumulation until last week when his protien got so low that he developed pulmonary edema(fluid in his lungs). Our vet also has one other dog a yorkie/poodle mix that has the disease but I am pretty sure it is rare.My mom tried very hard and I know about the expense I think about $6000 total. I know time will help us both and I appreciate your honesty and help. Thanks again, Mary |

| so sorry It sounds like a form of cancer. Many dogs these days are getting cancer. The Bernese Mountain dog has a life expectancy of 3 years! We are polluting their environment, and their bodies. I am sorry for you loss. Future thoughts- look at my posts- limit immunizations, feed well. And if something bad happens, use the herbal knowledge. Essiac Tea is a famous herbal cancer cure that was devloped from my ancestors from a wonderful woman named Cassie I think. It should be able to be administered to dogs. I pray that you find peace. deborah |
