| Picking up my new furbaby on Saturday...suggestions? I've heard lots of mixed reviews as to supplements and things one should have on hand when they bring their puppy home. I was wondering if anyone on here had any favorite supplements that they like to give their dogs or any particular products they absoutlely love to use on them? If so, are there any great places to get these things at that I'm not aware of. All we have around here is like Petsmart, Target and Walmart. Thanks for all the help!!! Hugs! |

| Nutrical is very good to have on hand, it can literally save a puppy's life. It helps puppies with low blood sugar that can lead to hypoglocemia (sp?). You can get it at most pet stores. It comes in a tube and it is a gel that you give them.

| when i first brought oscar home.. i gave him puree'd pumpkin and organic baby food... this helped get the nutrients into him while i got him used to his new home and eating his food in a strange place. he still loves it today... i do still cook his own food... but have put a little on top of some organic kibble before. it was just really great to use to keep his sugar level up and his tummy settled.let me know if you have any more questions |

| Water It might sound silly, but water supplies, even in different parts of the same city, can have different tastes and chemicals which can cause your puppy to stress even more than it already will by leaving it's home. When we brought Crystal home we took a gallon jug to the breeder's house, filled it with the water she was supplying to the pups, and over the next 2 weeks gradually added our water to it to dilute to our water with no drastic change for her. Remember, when we go to Mexico it's not the water that makes you sick, it's the abrupt change. Best of luck and congratulations. |

| That is a good idea - very interesting! Wow, I remember the day before I got my baby - it was SO EXCITING! Make sure you get a good nights sleep, and try not to leave anything to do before you go get the puppy - you won't have time or inclination to do anything - or very much, anyway, once you get him or her. Make sure *everything* is up off the floor and put away where puppy can't get it. Look around as if you were a puppy and see if there is anything to chew or get into trouble with. It's probably been covered somewhere else, but try to have a very small territory specifically for the puppy - for me, it was the kitchen. That's where a bed, potty pad, food and water were. I put a gate up so that he could stay in there when I couldn't watch him. You can also use an X-pen. This way he can explore just a little at a time as he gets used to his new home. Nutrical was an excellent suggestion, and familiarize yourself with symptoms of dehydration, which can definitely happen. If you know what to look for, you'll know how to treat it right away. Most importantly - make sure the pup is never unsupervised anyplace except "their place" - either the x-pen or room, or in their crate. Some of the books I've read actually encourage you to keep the pup on a leash with you at all times so that he/she learns to follow you and stay with you so you can keep an eye on them. That's all I can think of now - congratulations!! Can't wait to see pics of the little one! -Michelle |

| So exciting!! It brings back so many memories of bringing all of my fur babies home. I filtered Lily's water for a couple of weeks and I gave her nutracal twice a day just as a preventitive, morning and just before bed. I had to hand feed her sometimes if she wasn't interested in her food, she liked me being with her. So keep that in mind if your puppy doesn't want to eat. Have something on hand that you know the puppy will most definately love in case he'she won't eat, like the little desserts my Nutro or canned pumpkin. Good luck and most of all enjoy puppy hood, it goes by too quickly.

| Congratulations on your new puppy! You must be sooo excited. I got my baby in August at 11 weeks...she's 20 weeks now and doing great! Just like others said, definitely get the Nutri Cal and always have it on hand. The breeder I got mine from had me giving it to her 3 times a day because she was so tiny...now I don't give it as much but whenever I leave my house with her I always make sure I have that on hand. She absolutely loves it and will do anything for it! Another thing that I bought before I got my puppy was an exercise pen, which they have at PetSmart but I got mine from a local pet store. I remember it was the last thing I got because I didn't really want to spend $60 for an exercise pen but honestly it was one of the best things I got! It made keeping her in a small area of the house so easy! That is what you want to do when you first get your puppy...confine them to one area of the house until they are housetrained. It worked great! What we did is set up her crate in the living room and then put the exercise pen around it (securely so she couldn't get out) so that she could sleep in her crate when she wanted and put a puppy pad on one side and food & water on another and to this day whenever we have to go out we put her in her pen and she has the option of going inside her crate to sleep or playing in her pen. She is housetrained now so when we are home she is allowed to run around the house and play. It will take time for your puppy to learn where to go potty but be patient! I thought mine would never learn but she did within a couple of weeks! Good luck with your new baby! |

| I got my baby too on Saturday! Help?asap hello all, I finaly got my yorkie baby!!!!!! He got home yesterday, unexpectedly because I really wasn't planning on getting him at all. But I thank God I did. Question, He has only had a boiled egg all day today at about 3:00 pm because he doesn't touch the food that his breeder gave me. Also I've had to use a dropper to give him water because he isn't drinking on his own at my place yet. He is absolutely adorable and my pride and joy. Can he have 2 eggs in one day? and since he isn't touching his dry dog food. Or should i give him something else? I do have pears in the fridge. The breeder told me something about fresh fruits or yogurt? She;s into natural foods for her dogs. Also what tests should be done at his first vet check before the first 72 hours as required by the contract, to clear his health status. I was told by the vet clinic that there are 2 bile acid tests. 1 regular one by blood. and another one required to be done before and after eating. Which means I would have to leave him there early in the morning and then pick him up in the evening. Something that he very hard for me to do right now since I don't have a car and the vet isn't that near either. Many thanks, Maria19 |
