| not drinking or using the bathroom after being spayed Rosie was spayed yesterday. She is eating real well. As a matter of fact I just fed her and her food is done. She has been licking her bolw that no longer has food for the past several minutes However, she's not drinking. I mixed some v8 splash with her water and she didn't drink it. Now I have some oj mixed in it. She drank a little, but hardly at all. Also, she has not pooped since I have brought her and only peed last night at around 8. Anyone have any clue what I should do? Should I not be too worried about it? Btw, other than that she is doing real well. She has been wanting to sleep under our bed and couch and she has never done that before Thanks in advanced for any advice on what to do. |

| They often will want to hide under a bed or somewhere when they are in some pain and she will be after surgery. You might put a crate down with the door open to be her 'den' and easier to get at her than having to get her out from under the bed when you want to check on her. She sounds like she is feeling pretty sorry for herself which they do after anything invasive. Add water to her food and you can also use a 5 cc oral medicine syringe to give her extra water. She should just lick at it quite willingly, they love the extra attention and babying. She sounds just fine. Her bowels will move, takes a while after her presurgery fast to get things going. |

| Thanks! I feel better about the bowl movement. That had me worried a little since she has eaten so much but not going. I will also try the syringe to give her some water. Her crate door has been open and she usually loves going in there. For some reason she perfers under the bed instead now. Maybe she's tired of her crate since I made her sleep in there last night. |

| Getting more fluid into her should help her stools. I also like to give them some pedialyte post surgery. The anesthesia will usually upset stomach and bowels and usually will cause more of a too soft stool rather than constipate but every dog is different. If you can, go to your local drugstore tomorrow to the baby section and find a small bottle of unflavoured pedialyte. It is an electorlye solution and I always keep it on hand for my dogs. If they don't have unflavoured, then get flavoured it is fine. Give her about 3 cc's of it 3 or 4 times a day for about two days. Once you open the bottle, keep it in the fridge and it is good for about 5 days. The whole bottle is too much for her so you will end up throwing the rest out or drink some yourself, it won't hurt you. |

| She tried to go today, but started to scream. I went and bought buffer aspirin for her since that is what the vet recommended if she is in pain. She has not screamed because she was in pain until now. I mixed pedialyte in her food tonight, so hopefully that will help. Is there anything else I can do for her? I am a little worried since she will be home alone tomorrow for 4-5 hours. Btw, I am planning to call the vet in the morning. Just thought that maybe one of you have a suggestion for me to do tonight to make her comfortable. |

| If you mean by tried to go, as in to poo, and she cried she is likely constipated then. You can check her bum, make sure no hair or poo is stuck to her anus blocking her opening. You can try giving her a little margarine or butter to lick, not much just a little to loosen her. If you have mineral oil, that is better but no more than maybe 1/2 cc. Vegetable oil would work too so you can try either whichever you have on hand. Give her as much fluid as you can water and keep up the pedialtye but no more pedialyte than 3 or 4 times /day. If she still is unable to poo by tomorrow morning, you should get her into the vet. |

| Thanks! She pooped about 10 minutes ago. It was on the carpet in my room, but I didn't care. As long as she goes. She didn't even scream. Maybe the aspirin helped. It has been 3 hours since she had the pedialyte, so maybe that worked too?!?! Either way I feel much better. I was getting worried after 2 days of not using the bathroom. She was eating fine, but nothing was coming out. Maybe tomorrow she will feel better. Thanks for your help!!!! |

| Good sounds like she will be fine. Don't give her the oil or margarine then. Now that she has gone she will likely kick in just fine. I would keep her on the pedialyte for another day or two. YOu can give her some about 3 times a day for the next couple of days then take her off. |

| One more question. Is it normal for her to have several accidents? She wasn't fully potty trained before, but now she only used her pee pad once since Saturday. Also, The vet told me on Friday to use buffered aspirin if she is in any pain, so I gave her 1/4 of a tablet. I think they said give 1/2 but was not sure so I called today. They said that I shouldn't be giving her buffered aspirin and I should give her baby's aspirin. That makes me mad that they messed up like that How will I know if the buffered aspirin has a negative site affect on her? She seems normal right now, but I would like to know the signs of when I should be worried. |

| I went through the same thing with Piccolo. He was neutered last Wed. and didn't go for 2 days. He was on pain meds from the vet. On Sat. and Sunday he was almost himself and today he is a holly terror again ! So, don't worry - she'll be fine !

Baby aspirin has been used on dogs for pain in days past, I don't know about buffered. I doubt a 1/4 tablet given once would harm but I wouldn't give it again. My Vets now prescribe pain meds specific for dogs however, with any of these pain meds whether canine or baby aspirin, it can slow healing and in the case of surgeries, can result in more bleeding. Aspirin and even the canine pain meds also work as a blood thinner, so give with caution. If possible, it would be better for her to not get any at all but if she is in pain and showing that she is, as little as possible and infrequent medicating is better. Never give tylenol, it is dangerous for dogs. | |

| I would lay off the asprin, as it is a blood thinner, not a great thing to give after a major surgery, could make her bleed out.. I'm surprised your vet told you to give that. Quote:

| Thanks for the advice. I only gave her the aspirin last night. She hasn't scream since then. Hopefully she won't scream again cuz I don't know what I would do. |

| You are doing just fine with her. I would hold off the aspirin now and actually she should be doing much better now as a little time has gone by since the surgery. They recover very quickly. |
